"You 'ave already done so much, just don't stop becoming dis man you are." Kokuei had grown since the raids in the Westlands. Akiko could tell that, and if she wasn't careful, he'd outgrow her. The air within the tunnel was becoming fresher as they approached the exit Akiko had fashioned for the escape route. There still was not light shining through. It's not as though they could walk right out the end of the place given the fact that the aqueduct connects to a river somewhere in the northern mountains. Even if they did find its true mouth, and the source of the water blockage down the line, they would have to fight the force of a diverted stream to exit. Instead, Akiko had made a tunnel just outside of the village.
They were making it so far before Akiko heard a body drop like lead on the stone floor. She stopped and looked back to see Airisu had fallen straight to the ground. Akiko rushed back to the side of the younger Megami and rolled her body over to lay partially in her lap.
"Lady Akiko, I'm sorry--"
Akiko stopped the weak voice with a finger against her lips. "Shh." She didn't want her wasting any more of her strength. "You're over exerting yourself. I twas 'oping ta make it ta da surface before giving you this." She said as she pulled the syringe back out from where she had again tucked it. "Da fresh air und sunlight you've been denied fur so long would do you a world, but dares simply no time." Akiko looked up to Kokuei. "Dare's a corridor that splits off ta da right leading ta a dead end. Da wall's segmented wit vines. Tear it open und date will lead you out." Kokuei would be able to get them all out while Akiko tended to the sick clanswomen.
Airisu was smart, and could tell what the device was from behind her glasses even with her weakened state. She didn't doubt Akiko. Through the course of Akiko's experiments, Airisu and her sister had been injected with many things, and had so much more drawn from them. However, even her trust couldn't stop her from asking. "What is it?"
"It's da same solution date made me und da rest of da Inoculated."
"The Cure?" A spring of excitement shot into her voice, though followed by a cough from the overreaction. "You synthesized it?"
"No, but a friend 'elped me get a'old of it. You'll meet 'im soon 'nough. A shot of dis won't cure your affliction wit your sister, probably." Akiko was only guessing at this again. Since the formula was locked in her memory, she couldn't cross references it with Airisu's DNA. Furthermore, with the Plague so far along, any sample she would take from her ward would be corrupted inherently. "'Owever, it'll give you strength ta last longer, und dat will keep yours sister alive as well." Akiko raised Airisu's head up closer, exposing the girls neck as the purple hair dangled down. With a quick pitch, the formula was shot directly into the jugular. The effects spread like napalm. The black veins that covered Airisu's pale green skin receded out from the injection point as more life was breathed into the green flesh to pick up its hue. When Airisu's eyes again awoken, she felt stronger, strong enough to stand.
The two of the Megami headed out of the exit tunnel together.
