It might be a bit cliché to have a stick for walking, but not when it was a stick created from nothing but your own chakra. At the head of the staff Akiko had created as she made the long march through the desert from where the Land of Birds connected with desolate environment of the Land of Wind. Though life was harsh out here, it had become some semblance of a home to the green-skinned maiden that made this solo trip, having walked from the place where she had once, centuries ago, called home. However, the greener days were over, and from what she knew now, with good cause. This desert world had made her strong.

At the head of the staff, the bottom of which dug itself into the loose grains of dunes she traveled up and over, were a pair of three apples, one of which the girl's other hand reached up to pluck. Lushes slips bit into the juicy red gloss with nourishment normally not found in such an unforgiving place. Even in her short travel away from Sunagakure, where she made route for now, her abilities had grown stronger. Her garb was entirely made up of foliage she had sprung forth from nothing but her own chakra and imagination, being formed today into a cloak to protect from the sun, which held now clouds around it to provide any relief other then that which individual travelers could provide for themselves. The exterior of it was knitted leaves strung together with vines, though the shoulders were adorned with brightly covered flowers, both lilies and orchids, this poncho garb did not go down far past the waste, leading off into bare, and attractive, legs, only again covered by high rising shinobi boots made out of similar plant material.

She had been gone for a long time. Having sailed out from the Southern shore, she now returned from the northeast. Her journey had taken her to the devastation of the Land of Water, she would have to put into production a fertilizer formula to try and mend the damage there. However, the main formula was the one she kept tucked around in the safest place she had on her person, and as close to her heart as she could keep it. It was what she had been searching for much longer then this trip, and what would allow for her clan to finally awaken from their age-old bonds.

They would rise from their ruins, and she would have to lead them.

Today, Kokuei bore a black cloak. His home, the one place he found comfort in, had been destroyed and captured by the Daimyo and his armies. The decay, as some have coined it, wore Suna down. Powerless to stop all the criminal activity, the bloodshed, and no way to give proper protection to everyone in need, the Wind Daimyo took Suna by force in the promise of creating a "better country". But, violence only begets violence.

Needless to say, the recent turn of events wasn't easing Kokuei's troubled mind. He was getting older, his nineteenth birthday just around the corner, he was reaching adulthood. Kokuei was supposed to be responsible, a heroic shinobi, a well-respected man of Sun--err--Redwall. But what was he doing instead? He was putting seals on weaker shinobi for experimenting; they were harmless seals, but no matter how minor, it couldn't possibly be justified. And rather than be at Redwall helping to bring some protection, peace, and order to the ex-Suna citizens, he was out here wandering. Kokuei claimed that he was going to "recon", but he really just wanted to get away. Get away from the madness.

Caaw!

Tugging on his cloak, the Nara looked up the sky, his crow summon Murkrow circling above a figure in the distance. "He would've alerted me directly if it was trouble." Pulling down his hood, Kokuei quickly approaching the moving figure.

His eyes widened, quickly recognizing green skin. There was only person Kokuei knew with that pigmentation. "Akiko?!"

That bird?

It wasn't from the desert. Akiko observed this as she took another bite of the juicy apple before tossing the half-eaten fruit down to later be picked up by some desert going lizard, or buzzard picking at a rotten meal. Her hand reached down and picked up the seed being lifted up to her. Call it a precaution since the bird was suspicious not only for its origin, but also for its flight pattern being held over the area. That suspicious feeling of being watched was sometimes more then a suspicion, and she was a far distances from the Westlands to be expecting trouble.

However, Akiko never did spring the seed she had pulled, for it didn't take long for her to recognize a familiar face. "Kokuei!" She pulled down the hood and greeted her former teammate with a sparse hug, along with a single peck on the cheek.

"Whatever are you doing out 'ere, Love. Off to a mission?" She was still at least five miles outside of Sunagakure, and she certainly wasn't expecting to see someone from the village all the way out here. Least of all, someone she actually knew.

Having united the two comrades, Murkrow was quite pleased with himself. Crying out a subtle, caaw, the crow left the duo and continued scanning the desert from above.

"Uh..." Anxiety hit Kokuei like a brick, caught off guard by Akiko's display of joy and friendly affection. He wasn't used to the touchy-feely stuff to begin with, never mind the pretty girl delivering it. The only woman that had kissed him was his mother.

Transferring this shock to another part of his body to begin a nervous tick, Kokuei started to wring his hands. "M-mission?" he laughed, "I should be asking you that!" The Nara avoided the subject of his own "mission". "You've been gone for a while. Not many shinobi had gone missing these past few weeks, but there have been some that were killed by criminals. Some captured. And then...things just got so hectic that no one could pay attention any longer. It wasn't until a couple days ago that a 'missing list' began to emerge at the refugee camps and Redwall. I glanced it over and saw your name and...my brother's." His hands clamped together tightly as he stared at Akiko's feet.

He looked back up to the young lady, forcing a smile. "I was sort of glad I hadn't seen you for so long when I saw your name on the list. It meant you didn't go missing from the Daimyo's attack. Anyone unaccounted for from that battle are basically considered -- dead."

It was hard to keep a positive expression. Kokuei wasn't sure how Akiko could be so chipper and "huggy". It was as if she had no clue to Suna's fall and the decay of the Wind Country. But that was impossible, she had to of been living under a rock were that the case!

Kokuei's incoherent rambling made so little sense to Akiko that she began to think that he had succumb to heatstroke form the desert sun, but the rant was not so inconsistent that it seemed like he was making it all up. Still, Akiko was still under the impression that it would be best to get him back to the village in order to have him examined, or at least get him some water. "Kokuei, what are you on about? I 'ave just been off on leave. Out searching fur new plants and what'aveyou." She wasn't really about to get into the intimacies of what she really was doing. It wasn't that it was a lie, but rather a discussion of desolated water-lands and time-skipping adventures, of which Akiko still did not fully understand the science behind. However, she had taken the much more reasonable approach of just not trying to figure out the logistics of Dokutoru's time abilities and how half of what they did hadn't resulted in some major conundrum of any sort of continuum.

She checked his head to see if he was running a fever, though when it became obvious that he wasn't it just made her wonder more. "I couldn't 'ave been gone for more dan a month, so what's all dis you're rambling on 'bout da Daimyo und dis Redwall?" Was that a place, or just a redecoration attempt? "Let's get back tada village and you can 'xplain da rest dare." Akiko said beginning to walk again in the direction of Sunagakure.

New plants? Had she been off on a research expedition this whole time? The whole time? Maybe it was a Megami thing, like a spiritual awakening. She was probably in a thick, dense, forest in the Fire Country, no contact with the outside world. Akiko had no idea what happened to Suna, what happened to the Wind Country.

Ugh. Why did it have to be Kokuei? Why did he have to tell her?

The Nara didn't move, his feet remained still on the warm sand as Akiko began to walk past him. Kokuei reached his hand out, latching onto Akiko's forearm; he wasn't too tight, just enough to stop her from moving.

"Akiko..." he sighed, waiting for the young lady to turn to him. "The Wind Country has been in a terrible state lately. Rise in criminal activity, people are being murdered, lesser villages ravaged and controlled by mafia groups, and Suna has been powerless to stop it. The Daimyo blamed Suna and its shinobi, claiming that we have done nothing to improve the situation. Then the Daimyo sent an army to kill anyone in their way and take Suna by force so the Daimyo could take charge of the situation and bring 'peace' to the Wind Country. Suna made a final stand, thousands died, and we blew apart the village before we retreated. We wouldn't just hand them our home on a silver platter, we did everything we could to resist." Kokuei loosened his grip on the girl and let his arm fall.

"Suna's gone, Akiko. I'm so sorry."

The first part of what Kokuei had said didn't really impact Akiko. She had been around for the fall of Tsuji to a riotous mob. She knew of the problems with food shipments considering the collapse of trade routes in the advent of the Kiriclysm. Still though, anyone who had lived within a place so long begins to take for granted its continued existence. Even after seeing the realization of a country destroyed, even the possibility of the same being held against Suna was nothing but a fallacious fantasy to the girl. Because of that conception what Kokuei had to say next hit Akiko like a tone of bricks.

"What do ya mean it's Blood 'Ell gone?" Akiko ripped her arm away from Kokuei and turned to face him with this violent outburst though. Though angry, her expression was nothing but wanting, looking right into the Nara's eyes to search for truth in what he had just said. There were no lies, and just like that her temper turned to sadness and tears as she fell into him, arms press against his chest. This was the second home she had lost, and just like the first, she hadn't been able to do anything to stop it.

An involuntary response caused vines to grow up at her feet, as though anchoring her to the ground. With their element connected so much to her body and her emotions, it was not uncommon that intense expressions resulted in such things. However, these were not like the bright flowers that resulted from happiness, but more decrepit, having already wilted with decay.

"I should 'ave been 'ere. I could 'ave 'elped." She was fooling herself. Her involvement in no way helped to prevent the fall of Tsuji. She would have either ended up dead, or like all the rest. Pulling apart from Kokuei she kept eye contact with the man as she wiped the tears away. "Dat list, did it 'ave any other Megami on it? Dare would be two girls, yunger dan me." She wanted to know if Yuriko and Airisu had made it out safely, but in all likelihood Kokuei wouldn't have known.

As Akiko ripped her arm away and screamed at Kokuei, the young man couldn't but realize his poor social skills with women. How was he supposed to get a proper girlfriend if they got angry and yelled at him?! Maybe his nineteenth birthday would bring a little luck.

Kokuei flinched, retreating a bit from the green woman. "Uh... I..." a lump in his throat, Kokuei felt his friend's pain. He was shifting through ideas on how to reword his statement when Akiko suddenly collapsed into him, tears staining his dark shirt.

Glee to anger to depression-- it was official, Kokuei really could not handle a girl.

Unsure of where to place his hands, the Nara gently grabbed Akiko's shoulders until she moved away from the man. "Even with so many of Suna's forces fighting, we couldn't hold back the army. It was inevitable."

Shrugging his shoulders, Kokuei apologized to Akiko. "The list isn't alphabetical. I remember seeing your name at the near top of the list, but the rest of my search was a mad rush to see if my brother's name was on it." He rubbed his thumb along the palm of his other hand. "Redwall has a few lists. If there were any missing Megami girls, that's how you would find out."

Purple hair waved as Kokuei nodded his head to a large cliff side in the distance, the general location of Redwall. He'd have to escort Akiko back to the replacement village. Kokuei wasn't gone as nearly as long as he wished to be. But, he had a duty.

"Redwall, is dat where you're all bunkered down?" It must have been a refugee camp of some sort. To think, the entirety of Sunagakure was reduced down to the conditions of Iwa that had been granted asylum just before all of this. Akiko could only imagine what kind of conditions existed in such a situation. However, she was not too willing to hurry her way there. Part of it was a fear, a fear that she would be blamed for not having been there alongside her fellow shinobi to fight for the village. She would seem like a coward, even though she wasn't. However, it was more then just that. She couldn't go there and only look for her wards. That would be nothing other then selfish, especially since there could very well be starvation conditions, and she was the only person she knew that could supply food from nothing.

She didn't want to go there until she knew the full story, and for that, she would have to see where it had all begun at the end. "I'm not going dare, not yet. You said da village was blown apart in da retreat? Dan I'll go ta da ruins. You should come too if you're bruder's been missin. Da village would 'old much more truth dan any list would." She waited for his response before moving again. He might not want to revisit the place of the fall he had been forced to witness first hand, or perhaps, there was nothing left there that hadn't already been checked. However, Akiko had more then a few secrets about her, and there may still be some answers left within what has been buried in the sand.

"Not all of us. But, a lot." There were other various refugee camp-like villages around that Suna's people had fled to. For now, not only where these "camps" holding everyone who had lived in Suna, but wanderers and citizens of the Wind Country who sought shelter and safety.

She wanted... to go to the ruins? Suddenly, heading back to Redwall seemed like a wonderful idea.

"I don't think there are any survivors from the battle left in Suna. Not unless they had an underground shelter, I suppose." But a meaningless search wasn't Kokuei's concern about heading back to Suna. "No one has gone back to the village since we retreated. The Daimyo's forces are definitely scattered about the area, keeping guard, searching through the ruins, maybe they've even begun to rebuild it." The Nara shook his head. "Heading to the ruins would be suicide. If you still want to go... I'll come with you. Again, it's an incredibly reckless idea."

A part of him wanted to go for the slim chance that his brother had found a place to hide. Very unlikely, but, family was the only thing that Kokuei-- no-- the Hidden Sand had left. Family.

"Tis no more recklass dan all those raids against Westland outposts. 'Sides, if they 'ave started rebuilding it dan it's only to use it as a base for a reorganize against the scattered camps. From what you've said, they know dat we're not just going to abandon da villagers, they know we can't get far. If dare still is a threat, we need ta know 'bout it." From beneath her clothing the undergarments she had worn beneath the robe welted away and were replaced by new fabrications. Once they had assembled, the robe shared their fate and fell on to the wind. What had replaced it was a much more battle-ready suit. Thick padding of leafy plants assembled into leathery armor on the right shoulder and in front of the heart. The left was bare due to the slanted nature of the top slipping just in under the left arm. However, the left forearm was now covered in a bracer, protected by rose thorns. Similar thorns were spouted from the hip-belt, leading to leafy skirt and thigh-high stockings made from knitted vines.

Akiko took off back in the original direction she had been headed. Though there could hardly be a bright side to this whole situation, if at all there was a cloud with silver lining looming over the unforgiving desert, it was that she had found Kokuei had found her before she had found Suna. To gaze upon what they were about to witness without forewarning would have been a horrible thing. "Where was da last place ya saw yur bruder in da village?"

Looking at his outfit and then Akiko's, Kokuei suddenly wished he had brought a more appropriate attire for battle.

"I... I guess you're right." If the two of them could bring back some information on the Daimyo's progress, more important that it was possible to sneak around Suna with his forces still there, it would be a major push in a positive direction.

"But you weren't there when the army arrived. They were relentless and ruthless, even the highest ranking of Suna's shinobi fell. If we're really doing this, Akiko... we need to be stealthy." He tightened the thin laces on his black cloak; Kokuei would blend in with the shadows cast by the ruins.

Kokuei's heart strings twanged, his eyes averting contact with Akiko. "It was nearly chaos when we knew of the Daimyo's forces coming. Suna was split up into two big groups: the shinobi who would stay to defend the village, and everyone else who would retreat to Redwall. My father and I stayed to fight, but we forced my brother Kitsu to help escort the citizens to the refugee village. He was far too young to stay with us and fight, he surely would have died." The Nara shrugged his shoulders. "Apparently no one saw him after that. None of the shinobi escorts, or the civilians... no one. He was so determined to defend Suna against the army, I wonder if he fought anyway."

As he explained his brother's situation, Kokuei followed Akiko, lingering just behind her.

"Don't fret, Kokuei, you Nara 'ave more dan a bit 'o resourcefulness to ya." She wasn't just saying that to try and make Kokuei feel better. She had to keep her own hopes up that her two wards could survive for it was vital that they both still lived. "You say da strongest withstood da onslaught. What 'appened wit Kazekage Noriko. I cannot see 'er just ordering da retreat." Noriko was many things, and among them she was stubborn and relentless. Had she fought to the death to preserve the village? If the strongest fell, if the Kazekage fell, then maybe Akiko was a fool for thinking there was still hope to be had.

The doubt in her head that had built minutes before reaching Suna was only strengthened and reconfirmed at the site of what lay over the next sand dune. The Village Hidden in the Sand had joined the desolation of the desert! Before her lay a place that had once been filled with life, but was not little other then crumbled sandstone and lifeless tombstones. A few small fires still burned through the exposed shell of fallen defenses, trailing black smoke into the wind this desert was fabled for. The highest of the still standing towers was the obvious erect in the center, though the pointed head of which had fallen and now lay smashed upon surrounding buildings. The image took Akiko to her knees, and only a single word escaped her lips. "Bastards." In the form of a furious whisper held back from a chocked throat.

Akiko was so distraught by this, she didn't even notice the wooden crows-tower erected on the outside of the village. Kokuei had been right about one thing at least, the Daimyo was not yet prepared to relinquish the trophy he had won.

A smirk formed on Kokuei's face, his shoulders rising and falling. "I suppose" The Nara clan had proven itself to be one of the best out there. Kokuei and his father Kurai were shining examples of this, despite how little Kokuei thought of himself.

"Noriko went missing. She was the first one out there to fight the Daimyo's onslaught; she gave everything to give Suna's citizen as much time as possible to evacuate the village." Maybe this would give Akiko an idea of how powerful the army was and still is. Kokuei still wasn't very comfortable with heading to Suna's ruins.

Kokuei's heart dropped as the duo climbed to the near top of a sand dune, allowing clear view of a large mass of rubble and destruction. No large structures, no coliseum, no walls-- just... ruin. Utter ruin. This wasn't the once beautiful village of Suna, this was hell.

Shaking his head, the Nara collapsed right next to Akiko. This was the first time he saw his former home in this terrible state, it struck him to the core. Though, lowering their stance was probably wise with the freshly built towers scattered around the ruined village.

"They're all dead. All of them." His teeth clenched as his eyes scanned the wasteland. There were quite a few of the Daimyo's forces about, but not nearly as many as Kokuei suspected. Perhaps they were confident they had secured victory. "I am going to murder them. Every. Last. One. My brother-- I bet they know where he is. I bet he was captured. I bet one of them knows where he is. I'm going to find him. I'm gonna find him." He grabbed a handful of sand, shaking his head. "I... I just..." Slumping forward Kokuei pressed his forehead against the hill of sand, holding back all but a couple tears and shaky exhale.

This was no time to break down. Especially not in front of Akiko.

Moments later, Kokuei straightened himself up a bit, running a hand down his lightly flushed face. "I'm not quite sure how we can get into Suna. With the towers and all the people, we would be noticed immediately if we tried anything. If there were more shadows cast by the dunes I could try something." His fingers slid along the sand as he stared out onto the former village. "This is reckless to begin with, but we shouldn't be too reckless."

Akiko was brought back by Kokuei talking. She looked at him closely as he spoke the kind of words that she herself wanted to call out. However, she held back. Talk of murder and vengeance, those were things she would have to correct in herself to spare her from the same path as had been taken by the leaders of her clan. It was only a fear of having that same darkness within her that kept her aware of her actions any more, though her hand slightly trembled from the thought of bleeding each and every last one of those vagabonds out into the sand. She had to control herself though, keep her mind from going to those dark corners. She would have to keep Kokuei from such places as well to maintain her control.

"We're not 'ere fur revenge. One day, maybe, but betwix us both we're not 'nough ta do much damage round 'ere. Let's just us lay good and low and get out wit da windspeed be'ind us." She said reassuring Kokuei with a hand on his shoulder. As for how to get in, Akiko was already thinking of that. Her hand moved from Kokuei to her own wrist, off of which a thick hemp vine was starting to grow from her clothing. She took the vine and ripped it off, lacing it into a tight rope before doing the same with another vine. "As fur 'ow we'll get in dare, you're gonna walk us tru da front door." She said as she slipped Kokuei's headband off of him and tied it behind her neck. Next she did the same with one of her ropes, only higher so it served as a gag for her mouth. She took the final length of hemp and began securing it around one arm before presenting both of her wrist in front of Kokuei so he could finish securing her in bondage.

She'd be his prisoner, and he, her jailer. Though this guise they should not only pass into Suna, but also find out where these guards were keeping other prisoners like Akiko. Maybe among them would be Yuriko and Airisu, or even Kokuei's brother.
