~TEAM KAIDAN~ Waiting for our time

[ \The Meeting House | Kumonohora | The Heart of the Chiroptera/ ]
The reclusive fort housing the survivors of Kumogakure no Sato's destruction, located in the center of Chiroptera Forest whose dangers and local superstitions provide a natural barrier to the rest of the world. Nestled in the roots of one of the ancient trees, the people here are learning to survive alongside the ancient forest, the local Koumori serving to help things along. However, carefully hidden away underneath the fort the shinobi way of life continues on in the shadows in Kumonohora....

Crash.

The lightning...

didn't strike on this early morning.
No, the weather was pretty quiet except for the cold wind promising that Winter was soon at hand. Kairebu was standing just outside the village gate. He was wearing his standard shinobi gear, which included his Jounin flack-jacket(which now had the proper holsters for his custom made kunai and other various gear), a backpack full of supplies, his chakra cutting short-sword, and a brand new bokken that Kairebu recently received as a 'housewarming' gift bought by his old friends Koshi, Reiko, Yuri, Manabu, and Jurume. The bokken was made of polished white wood and had the word 'Kaidan' inscribed on it in kanji. Under the flack-jacket was a long raincoat that Kairebu wore because it was the warmest jacket he was authorized to wear on mission. Not, of course because it was raining.

The reason that the Hurusune gifted Soratodai was standing just outside the village gate-the West gate to be exact- was because there was a new mission for him and his team. Team Kaidan. The first mission went off without a problem. Kairebu was very impressed at how well the team worked together. Things would be pretty different for this mission, though because there were some new faces in place of others. Both Inoue and Asura were replaced for reasons that Kairebu meant to explain to Saichi as soon as he came to the West gate. One would hope that new students wouldn't be too wet behind the ears, but Kairebu was confident that these particular new faces wouldn't be just another problem to solve. Kairebu glanced at his analog watch. One look at the time was all he needed. It was five-forty.
"Plenty of time for them to be early," Kairebu thought to himself.

The sun wasn't even up yet, It still lingered on the crest of the horizon, the Hidden cloud village being one of the last o be greeted by the morning light. Its elevation didn't help the temperature either, with the clouds leaving a lingering fog early in the morning as they hung near the ground, the molecules heavy with the nights cold air. Osen struggled to pull herself out of bed though, knowing that she had a job to do.Even her bed was cluttered with stuff, clothes, pillows, a stuffed animal mountain, and even a small plate. The floor was no better, and as she stepped off of her bed onto the cold wood, she was greeted with a sharp pain as something she couldn't identify poked at her skin.

Quickly jumping into the sower, she made sure to wash everything from her long red hair hair to the little groves between her toes. She wanted to be as neat and clean as possible, despite the hurricane that was her room. A few minutes later and she had finally dried off and begun assembling her outfit. Her normal outfit, green pants and a tank top, seemed right, but she knew she was going on official business, it was cold outside in the early morning, and she had to look presentable. Instead of her normal white tank top, she wore a more stylized one, embroidered with red flowers that blended and ran together to form her clan symbol. Underneath she wore a black spandex turtleneck, something that was actually meant to keep her warm. For pants she wore a pair of long black pants with pockets lining the sides, which she filled with whatever tools she thought she would need. She wrapped her ankles with red tape before putting on her shinobi style sandals, making sure everything was neatly attached. Lastly, she tied her headband underneath her hair before sliding it backwards, using it as a hairband instead of just putting it on her forehead.

As usual, when she went downstairs there was a note on the refrigerator telling her that her aunt and uncle were out of town. this time though, there was a card attached to it with a letter that wished her luck on her new team, and when she opened the refrigerator, she was surprised to actually find it stocked with food. It was almost a first for her, the last time they showed this much effort was when she had graduated the academy, though they still were out of town.

Grabbing a quick breakfast, she ran out of the house, easily picking up speed and meeting at the village gate. The brisk jog had opened up her pores and warmed her up, and her pumping heart felt good. She didn't feel any vibe from her inner demon, and she felt confident that she would do well today and keep herself under control. In the distance she could see a person wearing a Kumo style flack jacket with a jacket underneath. She was sure this was their sensei since he was in the right place, at the right time, and wearing the right thing. Finally, she slowed down, walking over to him, but stopped when she realized that she had left her katana at home, leaning against the door. She hoped she wouldn't need it, but just realizing she didn't have it dropped her mood a bit.

Another team meeting under Kairebu-sensei.

Saichi hefted his pack onto his shoulder, slipping his other arm through the loop and making sure it was secure. A quick, final check that he had everything and was fully prepared, and the teen left his room, waving a quick farewell to his uncle before darting out of the temple grounds into the darkness of the early hours, sprinting along the long, winding road that led to Kumogakure no Sato; living outside the village had its difficulties, but he hadn't earned enough to move back into an apartment since his last one burnt down.

But the swirling stars glimpsed through the clouds and the silver moon lighting his way were things that he didn't mind at all.

Saichi had needed to enter Kumo from the east, leap over the rooftops, and then finally slow his pace to approach Kairebu-sensei and... a girl he didn't know. She looked vaguely familiar, but otherwise....

Keeping up his usual "poker face" to hide his nervousness, he stopped at a respectful distance and bowed slightly in greeting, otherwise remaining quiet as he waited for Kairebu-sensei to say something.

"It's time," Yuu stated in his thoughts as he took a look at the kitchen clock for the last time while doing a little bit of reading before heading out. The young boy was used to getting up early for his usual MIT duties. His usual routine would be to wake no later than 5, fix a cup of jasmine tea, study from one of his medical books for at least ten minutes, then do a touch of light reading of any creative fiction that he had particular attention in that week. All of Yuu's things would be ready for him to take along with him the night before. These 'things' included his medical bag, and in this case his various ninja gear as he figured he'd actually need it today; the day that he would be placed into a team. The height challenged boy finished his tea, and set his book on the table while being careful to bookmark the page he was on. Then he left the kitchen to the breezeway where his gear, shoes, and jacket were waiting for him. Yuu was out of the door in less than a minute after donning all his gear. The fresh air brought some light to his eyes, as he shut the breezeway and porch-light off and walked outside closing the door behind him as quietly as possible.

The weather looked fairly well. It brought Yuu's spirits up even more than they were already. It was pretty exciting for him to be able to meet new people and serve the village at the same time. Maybe they would do some traveling today? They were meeting at the West gate, after all. Yuu had never been that far outside the village before in his life. Once or twice there was a lesson given to him back in his academy days in the outlining forests, and there was also a few times his father, Jun took him for walks along some foot paths that ran along the village borders. What made the boy anxious about the team was in meeting his sensei. Yuu had not heard of Kairebu Soratodai specifically before, yet he knew of the clan he was from. More specifically, Yuu knew about the name and reputation of Tomoushii Soratodai, and even held quite a bit of admiration for him. It would be all the more thrilling for him to discover the connection Kairebu has with one of his idols. This was only one of many, albeit but surprises were definitely in store for more than one person in 'Team Kaidan'. This was another thing that intrigued the boy. Their team name was 'Kaidan'. 'Ghost story'. There just had to be a good explanation for it. Yuu hoped that he would get a chance to lambaste this 'Kairebu sensei' with questions, as he was planning on asking them any chance he got. It wasn't that far of a distance from his parent's house to the West gate as Yuu lived in the Southwestern area of the village.

Yuu came within view of the gate. His dark blue eyes could make out through his glasses three figures in the distance. As he approached them, he took note of each figure specifically. The one that stood out the most to Yuu was the girl. Her long red hair was interesting to look at in the dim light. The boy he saw looked well prepared with the backpack. Then there was the tallest one dressed as any typical jounin might be. The long wavy black hair made him look distinguished Yuu thought, yet seeing the rain coat made the boy check the skies again as he finished approaching the three individuals. He then shrugged off the thought.
"Good morning, everyone," he said out loud to the group as a whole while flashing a smile to each of them before focusing on just Kairebu. "Good morning, sensei."
He ran his hand through his dirty blond hair and adjusted his glasses. While Yuu didn't think too much of it, he hoped that being the shortest wouldn't single him out.

Kairebu had acknowledged each of them with a nod of his head as they approached. When Yuu finally joined them and gave a verbal greeting, he returned it with a smile.
"Yes. Good morning, you three. There are some introductions to be made as only one of you I've been on mission with so far." the sensei said to his students as a whole. He then took hold of a folder under his left arm with his right hand, simply holding at the ready before he needed to open it. "Saichi, I'd like you to meet Osen Jenzhi, and Yuu Hasori. These two are your new squad-mates as of today," he then said to the boy in question while indicating to both the others in question with his open left hand.
"Feel free to ask me about the specifics later. In the mean time, I'd like to finally open these orders. Even I didn't know what we were doing exactly today. I can wager a guess though by having this meeting take place at the West gate," Kairebu continued as he took the file in both hands and then opened the folder and looked at the contents. "Yep. Looks like a simple patrol mission," he stated simply as he then closed the folder and put it into his backpack after opening it a little. With another zip, it was tucked away out of sight.
"The patrol we're going to perform is the most standard one that just goes 'round the outside of the village. Apparently there are reports of wolves venturing pretty close to the village borders. What a perfect way to scare them off by having a fresh new ninja squad do it, eh?" While saying all this, Kairebu clapped his hands together and looked each of them in the face.

Runt.

That was all she could think of. While the one later to be identified as Saichi seemed easy enough to look at, and didn't irk any of her nerves just yet, Yuu, he was just so damn little. He was like the chicken wing at the bottom of the bag they tried to hide, and only threw in there to make the perfect 10 count. He was just...a

"Runt."

She had only whispered it, but still she knew she ran the risk of someone hearing her, and so she tried harder to listen to her instructions.

"...round the outside of the village. Apparently there are reports of wolves venturing pretty close to the village borders. What a perfect way to scare them off by having a fresh new ninja squad do it, eh?"

Wolves... She hated wolves. They seemed so mangy and unattractive. They were just like wild dogs to her, something she didn't even like when they were tame. Still, it was only dislike and not fear, so she wouldn't have too much struggle. Plus, If they were trying to encroach on "her" village, they had another thing coming.

Kairebu hadn't asked them to say anything so she kept her mouth shut, only nodding in acceptance of the mission, but again, her thoughts found their way back to their initial decision.

"...runt."

New... squadmates.

He could deal with it; at least he wasn't the only guy this time other than Kairebu-sensei.

It meant a recalculation of potential strategies, though, to adapt to the new team members. Saichi glanced at the girl again, listening quietly as she quietly repeated "runt", no doubt about his other squadmate....

Jenzhi-san wasn't built like a taijutsu specialist or weaponry specialist, so that ruled out those possibilities. The way she held herself.... Possibly a ninjutsu specialist? He wasn't really sure. He already got the feeling of a bit of an attitude, though, so that would have to be taken into account.

He glanced at the shorter boy, Hasori. It looked like he was carrying medical supplies.... And with his build and stance not suggesting any direct combat specialties, it was probably safe to assume he focused on medical skills. Cheerful, and glasses.... It looked like it would be best to leave him in a support role, unless he showed any surprising skills.

Throughout this brief analysis, Saichi kept up his grin and calm, confident expression, nodding once in greeting to each of his new teammates with warm amethyst eyes.

Running a hand through his dark brown hair for a moment, he considered the mission as his amethyst eyes returned to Kairebu-sensei.

Wolves? The normal variety most likely, since the ones local to the Chiroptera typically stayed within their habitat where they could move freely.... Didn't mean that they could let their guards down, though. But flash tags, kunai, smoke bombs.... Those would be enough to scare them off if they were normal wolves. No need to kill.

Either way, he was ready.

The young boy could swear he heard the 'Osen' girl say something. Since Yuu couldn't make out what she said exactly, he just put it off and paid attention to his new sensei. The man seemed both experienced yet casual. This gave the boy no doubt that he was going to like having Kairebu as his sensei. Although Yuu wasn't much of an outdoorsy type, this mission sounded simple and easy enough and to his liking as long as they kept to the paths and didn't get too wet or dirty. He couldn't contain himself when hearing Kairebu's statement following a summary of their mission details.
"I'm ready when you are," he openly stated to the team as he adjusted the straps on his shoulders.

"Good," the sensei replied, taking note already in the subtle differences in Osen and Yuu's way of expressing signs of respect. Kairebu also took into consideration the 'runt' side-comment that Osen made, obviously directed at Yuu. Even though the boy somehow managed not to hear it, the aging Soratodai already began wondering how he might best resolve the trouble that was bound to come from the current relationship that the two young shinobi shared. The boy's size wouldn't help much, but Kairebu felt confidence that there was some use to this boy in spite of being so small and frail looking. The medical bag was a good indicator of this.
"Now, here's how this is going to work out. We're going to split into two groups to cover both sides of the patrol in one pass. Both groups are to study the area around the village, looking for signs of these wolves. Key things that we're going to be looking for are animal tracks and droppings aside from actually seeing the animals themselves. This mission for now is based on reconnaissance, so no one is to engage into any combat unless you feel that someone's life, or the lives of civilians are in danger," the sensei explained, looking each of his students in the eye. He gave a pause, more for effect as he had a pretty good idea on the group arrangements and required little further thought into the matter. "Saichi! You're with me. We're going to cover the South route. While Osen and Yuu, you will be covering the North."
Then Kairebu put his hand in his coat pockets, pulling out objects from both. As he held them in front of him in his open hands, the others could see that they were a twin set of radio transceiver communicators.
"These things are going to keep us in touch, even over the far distance. While I use one of them, Yuu here will be the one to use the second. It's tuned to a frequency that is frequently monitored by 'Hidden Cloud's finest', so if it's not too much trouble, Yuu I'd hope you try to keep the conversations over these as mission specific as possible. Besides, I want you focused. Think you can manage that?"
Yuu held some anticipation over who he was going to be grouped with. While he was fairly disappointed over not getting to be with Kairebu's group, the sudden responsibility he was given seemed as a gift to him that drew back his disappointment. A simple nod of his head was all that Yuu seemed to be able to express easily as he accepted the transceiver. He had never used one before, so he watched Kairebu don it by placing the ear piece in his left ear and clipping the box to a pocket on his vest. After Yuu donned his, placing the ear piece in his left like Soratodai-sensei and the box clip over his left pants pocket, he then looked back to Kairebu noticing him then flipped a switch on top of the box. The boy quicky followed suit with his, giving Kairebu a thumbs up.
"Alright then. Let's be on our way. We'll keep going on this road just a little further, then split ways on the paths in question."
Kairebu turned and began walking down the road, away from the village. Yuu looked to the others and came beside Osen, waiting for her to begin following their sensei.

Her judgement skills might be considered lacking, but in her mind, she couldn't see how pairing her up with the runt boy was going to help her. Sure she could probably protect him, but that wouldn't do anything for her. She hadn't even taken the time to check him ut as far as what he carried. She never noticed his supply bag, or the fact that his rather nerdy look meant he was smart or resourceful. Really, she just saw him as a nuisance, and it showed on her face as a slight frown. Maybe it was from the years of living virtually on her own, but she had already decided she didn't need him.

"Whatever..."

She held her head down, now wishing she had grabbed her sword since she had the feeling she would be coming into some sort of physical situation. Whenever it came to interacting with other people, or animals, and especially wolves, it always got physical. It was like nobody knew how to just leave her alone, and certain animals, wolves in particular, always found their way to her. She could fondly remember as a little kid, just after she had been "Gifted", that she was traveling with her parents when they were attacked by wolves. Somehow they had surrounded them and then separated her from her parents. The wolves went for her in much greater numbers than they did her parents, and had it not been for her "gift" she would have died. When her parents found her there were almost a dozen carcasses, and she was alone and crying, wit no memory of how she survived, just a deep hatred for wolves, and a fear of being abandoned.

Again, she simply nodded, accepting her assignment, and began walking, her mind focused on what lay ahead, and shuddering at the thought of her childhood memories. There were a lot of things she tried to hide away, but recently they had started coming back out.

Foolish girl.
