House of Cards | Insurrection

Things were moving so smoothly for Osen now. She had been getting missions every few days now, making use of her skills as a shinobi, her village finally trusting her to do more than just sit on a shelf and look pretty. She had been with quite a few different people as well, learning a little here and there from different people, even though her greatest desire was to learn from her own clan. Still, she couldn't let that get her down. Her ambition was higher than that. She would be great, even if she had to work all of her life to get there.

A gentle, warm breeze blew through the trees, their leaves strangely colored for the time of the year. As a red leaf fell onto the ground she picked it up, admiring its beauty. Almost like a people hitting her in the head, she remembered the path was called the autumn path, so she simply assumed that was why. She pocketed the leaf, keeping it a souvenir of her first trip down this road. She was wearing simple clothes, a white shirt with her clans logo, they wouldn't be too happy about that, and a pair of cargo shorts. She was really hoping to earn a flack jacket soon, but she would have to complete quite a few missions before it was that time. She had her almost trademark katana on her back, and it was strapped to her body with a black strap. Her bright red hair was still cut short, mohawk style, which she found much more convenient than in her younger days. no fuss, no mess, no trouble.

In her backpack she had a few days supplies, a tent, food, water, a radio, and a few other things. Her destination, a little town about a days walk away where some bandits had been doing a terrible job of upholding the standards of the Cloud Empire. Her companion...

Aashif was sound asleep in the hotel room that he had bought for the night, still yet to get an apartment. He woke up when he heard a knock at the door. "House keeping!" He stirred in his sleep a little bit, but refused to wake up. KNOCK KNOCK "House keeping!" He groaned a little bit, and rolled out of bed, attempting to sit up, but ultimately failing, he fell flat on his face, and the unstrung long bow fell on top of him, reminding him that he had a mission today with another shinobi. He looked up, the sun was relatively high. "I'm probably late..missions are supposed to start in the morning, right..?" KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK "House keeping!" How could she keep such a cheerful tone, but knock so violently? He looked down on himself, he had packed light, having only a katana, a back pack full of clothes, a longbow with a quiver that held thirty six arrows, and a grey green and brown mottled cloak. He opened the door, shirtless, and let her in. "Thank youu!" She said, holding that ridiculously cheerful tone. "Yeah..sure." He muttered, and while she was cleaning he quickly threw on a black shirt, following which he put on a pair of black boots.

He strung the bow, and tested the draw weight. "Expecting trouble today?" he looked over, surprised that she had spoken to him. "Yeah, something like that." He buckled the quiver across his back, so he could draw and fire quickly. He then took his katana. "Do you know where there might be a good liquor store?" He said, and she nodded quickly. "End of the block, Marjorie's liquor." He left a tip as thanks, and put on the cloak, leaving the cowl down. He walked down and checked out of the hotel, and walked to the liquor store, and took about ten minutes selecting a rum that wasn't some variation of sake. He noticed that the store manager wasn't watching him, so he put the bottle in his cloak and walked out, heading down the street to a place called "Autumn Road" or something similar to that. He carefully opened the bottle of liquor when he was a decent distance away, and took a swig, he sighed as the liquor burned a path down his throat and to his stomach, and screwed the cap back on, putting it into his backpack.

He stopped, figuring he should buy some food, too. He bought a bag of apples, and stuffed that into his backpack, too. He waved to a few people he had met in the past week he had been in the village, he had a grey bandana headband, and a regular grey one, today he had chosen to wear the bandana headband, his hair covered and held down out of the way. He moved silently, and quickly, and as he came into the clearing he saw Osen, dressed a little more properly than when he had first seen her, in a white t-shirt with a logo on it that he didn't recognize, and cargo shorts, she was bent over and she had picked up a red leaf, he stepped out onto the path, after she had mused aloud about his whereabouts. "Present." He said, and waved to her. "Sorry I'm late. I brought apples."

The little chirp of a voice startled Osen a little, she hadn't hear him approach or anything. Oddly enough though, her little gesture of bringing apples pleased her, she really liked them for some reason. She picked up the faint smell of liquor on him, her nose being very strong, but that didn't concern her. She didn't drink but she wasn't against anyone else doing it. She smiled at him for a moment, remember their last little fiasco. His wounds had healed up nicely, and he didn't seem like he had gotten into much trouble after that.

"So... You ever been where we're going before?"

Their destination, Nagoya, was roughly 30 miles away from the actual village. There was another small town, Ahri, on the way, but if they skipped visiting it then they could cut out about 3 hours from their trip. Osen wanted to suggest it to Aashif, but decided to wait until they got a little further. It was no point in discussing something that was hours away. Either way, it would take them all day and a few hours into the next day to reach it, and though cart travel would probably be faster, moving on foot was more of the shinobi way. Plus, she enjoyed nature and wanted to make use of all the things she had packed, they would simply go to wast if she didn't. She had to practice her survival skills, one never knew when they would truly be needed.

Aashif was about to apologize for startling her, but instead he caught himself, and opened the bag of apples, and took out one, and tossed her the green apple. "I don't know if you like green or red, but I like green better, so I got green." He said simply. As they started walking It was quiet for a few minutes where neither of them knew what to say to each other, so in the silence he began to eat his apple, as quietly as possible. It was considerably difficult to eat a apple quietly, mostly because it crunched every time you would separate a piece of the apple from the main body. His mouth was full of delicious when his companion had asked him whether or not he knew where he where they were going. He chewed the apple that was in his mouth while he thought, and swallowed. "Nope. I never heard of the place until I picked up the mission." He said, and took another bite of the apple, "have you?"

It was at this point that it had dawned on him that he had neglected to bring a sleeping bag, or for that matter a tent, and he shrugged. "How long is the walk from here to uhh..Nagoya?" He said, trying to make conversation. When Osen had flipped out on the thugs at Yujin's he hadn't seen the color change in her eyes, so asking her about that was completely out of the question, maybe he'd ask her about the logo on her shirt later, or something like that. "Oh, I can hunt, if you don't want to eat apples all the way to Nagoya." He said, and tapped the bow slung across his back. He frowned, and mused that he should probably be carrying the bow, in case they were ambushed. He considered unslinging the bow, but thought that if they were ambushed that Osen had the katana that was across her back, and that whoever the hypothetical ambushers were, they would have a hard time taking out the two genin. Unless of course they were rogue ninja. Well, in that case then they were most likely fu
cked. "There aren't any ambushers on this road, are there?"

Not that she would know immediately, he wasn't sure if the road was notorious for ambushers or not, it looked like a nice enough road, perhaps some people would come here for a walk, and then would get jumped. He sighed, and took another bite from his apple, convincing himself that he was scaring himself into believing that they were going to get jumped.

The walk was actually pretty smooth, the transition to a repulic having affected all of the lands in the Lightning COuntry. Everything was more connected now, and the roads were nice, paved or at least flattened paths with distinct directions. The company of her companion, and the supply of apples, green actually being her second favorite, only beaten out by yellow, kept her mood up, and though she had never heard of Nagoya in any stories, she had seen it on a map before. Supposedly it was just a simple town with nothing particularly interesting about it, but places like that alwaays had some sort of deep dark secrets, nothing was ever really simple in the world of ninja and men.

"There aren't any ambushers on this road, are there?"

It was a topic she hadn't really given any thought to. With the increased security in the country, regular theives and highway robbers were falling out of style, but those who survived were especially ruthless. She wasn't exactly sure if they were in the territory of anything like that, but it was something that one always took into consideration.

"I'm not sure really, but our best bet is to stay alert. We should probably take shifts doing a watch when we sleep tonight. I'll go first if you want."

After that exchange, the pair fell silent for a while, simply walking and enjoying the scenery. Even though it was just the beginning of summer, the road seemed to be in a perpetual state of fall. She wondered how something like that could happen, but nothing she had ever heard of could explain it. Still, it was remarkable that while the majority of the leaves were golden, every few moment a red leaf would fall. As she walked she began to count how long it would be before she saw another one.

"56... 57... 58... 59... Red."

"56....57... 58... 59..... Red."

"Wait a minute......."

As she looked down, Osen realized that she had passed the same red leaf before. It was lying right on the ground, right in between a pair of golden leaves. Looking off to the side, Osen spotted her apple core, the one that she had chucked as soon as she finished it. That was almost an hour earlier. Looking in her pocket, Osen was almost unsurprised to find the leaf she had picked up was missing.

"Aashif.... I think we have a problem..."

With everything blending together, Aashif hadn't noticed that they had walked past the same tree about four times, or the red leaf that Osen had noticed. He was too busy scanning the trees looking for things that were out of place. He hadn't noticed that everything had looked the same. He tossed the apple core to his right and kept walking, not noticing that Osen had stopped, until she had somehow magically teleported in front of him. Which had definitely caught his attention. "Aashif, I think we have a problem." He blinked, "yeah..me too." He quickly drew the katana, and circled once, he remembered reading something about genjutsu being removed from physical pain. He sheathed the blade, and drew a smaller one, a kunai from his pouch. He wasn't sure about the theory, but figured that it would work, but it was worth a try. "Osen, give me your hand." He said, and took her wrist, slashing the palm of her hand, and then did the same to himself, and as the genjutsu faded away they were still about a mile from the village, although it had felt like they walked way more than that.

"Alright we-" whatever he was going to say was lost forever, he brought up the kunai to deflect two shuriken from the front, and was kicked in the back, his arms sprawling out and he slammed hard into the tree in front of him, and then by some sixth sense he rolled to the right, and the masked attacker slammed his fist into the tree, Aashif jumped into the air and brought his knee up, attempting to knock the person out with a knee to the chin, however they gracefully leaped into the air, and landed on a tree, he grabbed his katana and sidled closer to Osen.

He silently cursed himself. He had managed to jinx the both of them. If he hadn't said anything about the bandits, then they wouldn't have attacked them and they would be able to get to Nagoya peacefully and just deal with the other bandits. Or..maybe these were the insurgents that had invaded Nagoya and when they defeated them they wouldn't have to walk all the way there and they would be finished with their mission in the first day.

Or they would be brutally murdered by them. "Carajo!" He cursed aloud this time, he had quite possibly jinxed them again. No, he wouldn't allow himself to die here. Although he didn't really allow himself to be knocked out in the fight he had gotten into last week. "..Do we still have to go to Nagoya after we finish this dude off?"

her partner seemed to have noticed the predicament they were in as soon as she did, and he already had a solution. She hadn't been in a genjutsu before, she hadn't even fully figured out that that was what was going on, but he had, and quickly removed them from its effects, at the cost of a little cut. Before they could make any more plans the attack was on, a masked bandit going straight for Aashif. Form the way he attacked he was trying to get rid of him quickly, probably thinking that since she was a female that she was the weaker of the two. He attacked Aashif from two sides, from the front with shuriken and the back with a flying kick. She was able to get a good look at him then, a simple porcelain mask, like the Anbu of old, and what she remembered as traditional ninja garb. He was dressed in all black so she couldn't make out any more features than that, and he quickly dashed into a tree after a failed attack.

Aashif scooted over to her, sword drawn, but she doubted that it would do much help. From what she had seen, he didn't have a sword, which meant that he would probably either be using close range weapons or long range. From the speed of his first attack trying to defend with a sword would leave them vulnerable. She hadn't even considered that he might use some form of ninjutsu either, but s she remembered the genjutsu she figured it might be a possibility.

Osen scanned the trees where the bandit had jumped, but he had disappeared almost as quickly as he appeared. As she was scanning she noticed a few leaves falling, and figured it was him. They moved from left to right, moving in a direction that seemed to flank them. Before she could adjust herself to face what she thought was the threat, the leaves that had fallen began to twist and turn, forming three exact replicas of whoever the bandit was.

"Leaf....Clones...."

She murmured the words out loud, possibly for Aashif to hear, but more to just hear them for herself. The clones charged, attacking as a unified front, and causing Osen to lose focus of the enemy that she had expected to be behind her. As she prepared to attack them she remembered at the last moment, and tried to plan her attack accordingly.

"Kumo-Ryu: Uragiri "

She quickly turned her back to the three clones, slashing in the process. Turning her back allowed her to see the attack coming from her blind side, a tactic whoever this bandit was had used before. As soon as her body was rotated enough she ducked down, as two kunai passed over her head. If she had have outright attacked the clones she would have been skewered. Looking back, one of the clones was slowly falling into a pile of leaves, the other two had stopped running. The two kunai had embedded themselves in a tree, but she had to keep he focus forward. She knew the enemy was that direction. She wold leave the other two clones to Aashif.

Aashif circled once again, and as he did his companion was assaulted by the bandit, but she was prepared, seeing how he had dealt with Aashif, she had guessed his tactics correctly. She dodged an attack from the rear, and the piercing blades from the ninja killed one of the clones that he had neglected to notice earlier. By some telepathic message he knew what Osen wanted him to do when she took off after the shinobi. He turned to face the two clones and moved hid blade between the two of them as they kept coming towards him, he sliced forward, and the clone dodged, and the other one kicked at Aashif, while he ducked and brought the blade around in a close cut towards his body while he spun around, he cut the clones arm off, and brought the blade again and severed his head a second after he removed his arm, and watched him disappear into a poof of leaves. He turned towards the other clone, and threw a kunai with his left hand, and it sliced through his throat. He also disappeared into a poof of leaves, he went to clean his blade and remembered that clones didn't bleed. He retrieved his weapons from the pile of leaves, putting the kunai in his pouch, and took the attacker's kunai too.

He was just beginning to wonder how Osen was doing when he heard a blood curdling female scream that could have only come from one throat, he took off at a dead sprint into the woods, and ran straight into an extended spear, which ripped through his chest, he tried to scream but only blood poured out of his mouth, the ninja pushed the spear all the way through him, and then grabbed the younger man by his throat, and slammed him against a tree, and healed the wound in his chest, he slammed a kunai through his hands and hung him by his hands on the tree, he removed his mask, and laughed. Aashif's vision was blurred from pain and he could only make out a cute nose. Oh wait, he was a she? Or maybe he just had a really girly nose. "Your friend's dead." /S/he said. "I'm going to make you suffer, though. She died too quickly." Aashif screamed as /s/he drew a kunai along his ribs, the blade made an audible noise as it hit each individual rib, and /s/he slashed him across his face, blinding him in his left eye. He tried to kick at the mysterious bandit feebly, barely making contact with her/his ribs.

"That won't do." /S/he said, and slashed across his stomach, deep enough that his intestines began to spill out, and he was able to make an audible scream, a raspy sound from a tortured teenager. He was in too much pain to actually cry. The bandit punched him in the nose, whiplashing his head back against the tree, and causing the back of his head to bleed. He just wanted to die already, how come the bandit wouldn't just kill him? He made a groaning noise, and /s/he began to heal him again. "You're not through yet." /S/he said, and left the slash across his face, but healed everything else. Which is when she took his sword from him and prodded him in the chest, just enough to make him bleed, and then stabbed him all the way through into the tree.

"You're gonna' die here, I hope you know that." /S/he said, and he tried to spit but only managed to dribble blood down his chin.

Osen quickly ran off, towards where her opponent lay. She wasn't sure why she did this though, maybe it was hot headdedness, or maybe it was misplaced courage, but she knew that she could take this enemy. He was hiding behind tricks and illusions, and that kind of person, they normally weren't that strong, they were simply smart. She was both strong and smart, and even if she was only a genin, she knew she had what it took to beat any foe. Her footsteps did little to get her to where she was intending, each step seemed like it only moved her inches, and yet she could feel herself getting tired. IN the distance she could see the bandit perched in a tree, simply watching her struggle, what she could tell was a smile hidden behind his mask. No matter how hard she tried she got nowhere, and then she remembered that she had already been caught in a genjutsu before.

...No way... but when....

Looking down she saw that there was nothing binding her, but when hse moved forward, no matter how many steps she took she got nowhere. She was definitley trapped again, but she definitley didn't think she had it in her to stab herself or cut her hnd again. It was already aching and in pain, she just couldn't. All she could muster was to stick her finger in her wound and press as hard as she could. She prressed until her eyes watered and then some, and slowly, she could feel the genjutsu wearing off. The feeling was weird, like stepping out of thick fog, or clearing your sinuses, but she felt different. Turning her head she saw that Aashif was stationary, a very pained look on his face. Facing back forward she could make out the enemy shinobi, who had dropped down from the trees and was walking towards her.

He doesn't know I'm out yet....

She hadn't moved yet, and she kept her body as still as possible, waiting for him to get just close enough. Her sword was still in her hand, she had never sheathed it. When he got close enough she was going to stab him right through the chest. She was going to end this. She was going to.....

"ACHOOO"

She [badword] sneezed.

The ninja quickly stopped walking an darted off into the woods. OSen shook her head in disbeleif at her own body's jackassery, and tapped Aashif. He didn't move. She tapped him a little harder, but he still didn't move. She looked at the pile of leaves, looked at him, looked at the pile from the clone he had killed, looked at him, and punched him almost as hard as she could.

"WAKE UP!"

This was why they didn't send two genin on any type of mission. They were just not prepared, they weren't strong enough, and they didn't have the teamwork they needed to succeed. Aashif had been trapped in the same position for almost half an hour, no matter how hard she hit him, or pricked him with a kunai he wouldn't snap out of it. She didn't know what kind of technique it was that he was under, but whatever it was, she couldn't deal. If that guy that ambushed them was just one of the bandits in the village then she knew she couldn't do it by herself. She hated the idea of not being able to complete a mission, especially when it was up to her, but hse couldn't just leave him there, and she couldn't beat the other guy by herself, she was sure she would die.

"[badword]!"

Scooping Aashif up sh draped him over her shoulder and began the long trek back to Kumo, or short trek since for hours they had been walking in circles. The genjutsu that had locked them there had ended thankfully, and when she reached the village gates she dropped him right then and there, in front of two guards, and walked in, both disappointed in herself, and disappointed in the village's planning. She couldn't believe how her first unsupervised mission played out.

"Hey, Osen... Good job."

She turned around to see who was speaking to her, only to find the shinobi that had ambushed her in the forest standing right there infont of her. He was wearing the same exact outfit, and she quickly went to draw her sword before he halted her with a hand, flipping up his mask to reveal the Kumo headband across his forehead. His dirty blond hair had streaks of red and orange in it, and the golden eyes that she had seen so clearly earlier were exactly the same.

"My name is Ashura, and that mission was actually a test of your decision making skills. We need more people that know when its the time to fight and the time to get backup, and you made the right choice. Oh, and your friend over there should be fine. The technique wa sa combination of a pain numbing poison and a genjutsu. That's why you couldn't get him out by hitting him, he didn't feel a thing."

Osen had a shocked look on her face, she had been played by the village. She didn't know how to feel though, should she feel betrayed, should she feel glad that she passed, she didn't know how to feel, so she simply did what she had learned to do in those situations.

"Well then... ya'll got me... Again. So do I still get paid?"
