"Hitomi, I need you to do me a favor..."

The two women's eyes locked for maybe the third time ever, and yet the elder woman's tone sounded almost casual with the younger. Miyako, the Assistant Hospitality Adviser in the Sky country, had a job for one of her new acquaintances. Going over many of the shinobi's records, Hitomi's stood out, even though most of hers was forged. What it stated was that she was an expert at infiltration, assassinations, and retrievals. This was completely true, but the circumstances under which it was placed in her file, they were completely false. Still, only a few people knew of this, and Miyako, oddly enough, was one of them.

"I need you to retrieve a map for me. Of course, this will have to be kept very quiet, like personal favor quiet. Like... national incident if you screw it up quiet."

Hitomi smiled, her crystal eyes locked on Miyako's. This was her specialty, not just because she was good at it, but because she loved doing it. Just the thought of the amount of risk involved got her blood flowing. She nodded her head, waiting for a little more info, but she was already on board. She liked this Miyako lady, the two of them had a lot of things in common and she was quite pretty as well.

"Its located in a temple in the demon country called Hachikujaku temple. The temple is guarded, not heavily, but fiercely. The monks there are rather strong, not as strong as you, but in numbers they could easily overpower you, which is why stealth is a necessity. The temple is not very big, but the map is hidden in there somewhere, probably on a lower level or something. Bring that to me, and i'll have a nice reward waiting for you."

Hitomi liked the sound of this, and she had a mind to ask what the map was to, or why it was so important, or why she couldn't get it herself, but she was sure there was a reason, and whatever that reason was... she was sure that it would make this all the more exciting. Hitomi's smile was all the confirmation Miyako needed, and she handed her a map of her own.

"This map will get you to the temple, but that's as far as it will get you. I would advise destroying it after you memorize it, you wouldn't want it falling into the wrong hands and anyone following it back here. Oh yeah, and make sure not to wear anything that would identify you as being from here either. We wouldn't want this getting out."

Hitomi nodded, scooping up the map from the table and shaking Miyako's hand. She hadn't had a real solo mission in a while, but if it was stealth, then she definitely knew who not to invite. Plus, Shura had been pretty preoccupied as of lately, exploring the city and all of its residents, so to speak.

Not moments after Hitomi left, Miyako sat back in her chair, spinning around with a smile on her face. As the chair came around she was no longer a she, but a bald man with very very pale skin and eyes that were the deepest black, like pools of ink against an ocean of paper. He was dressed in a black vest and black pants, with an unnerving look in his eyes that was only complimented by the fact that his smile was still there as he walked out of the office, and down the hallway, passing the real Miyako as she returned from her lunch break.

"Lets see which one will complete the mission...."

The journey didnt take long, only a few hours, but hitomi spent the time she had left of daylight mapping out the outside of the building. She counted 37 rooms, and she saw plenty of monks, most simply meditating, but a few practicing some type of martial art. She was sure those were the ones that Miyako was talking about, and she ounted as many of them as she could. As the day went on she continued her scouting, trying to find the most effective entrance, the most likeley place the map would be hidden, and the quickest way out. As night fell she cursed her luck, a giant full moon lighting up the night sky. She couldn't worry too much about that though, she had a job to do, and as long as she didn't draw all of the monks attention at once, se would be fine.

"Alright, lets do this..."

With a few quic kleaps, Hitomi was inside of the monastary walls. She quickly dove behind a wall, two spear wielding monks nearly crossing her path as soon as her feet hit the ground. Still she avoided them, and quickly used her chakra to scale the wall. She had seen people on every floor that day, btut the most were on the third, and the least were at the top, where the bells were. She imagined that they were hand rung, so she might run into some resistance, but it was better to fight one or two people than 5 or 10. As she peeked her head above the edge of the window, she noticed the coast was clear, and so she quickly climbed in, and made her way to the trapdoor that led to the next floor. She oppened it, revealing a short set of steps and an open door.

"So far so good..."

As she looked in she saw a few monks sleeping on the floor ans she stepped into the room lightly, but only then did she realize that they were not sleeping, some were unconcious, and some, some were dead. She took a step backwards, out of shock and tripped over another downed body. As she hit the ground she made a loud thump, and as she got up she was greeted by another person standing in front of her. He was dressed in all black, with fiery gold eyes and a crest on his outfit made of orange. It mirrored and contrasted her outfit as well, she was wearing nearly the same ninja outfit, though hers had veins of blue running through it, with a crest on the back made up of three intersecting blue triangles, something that she had inherited from her father. As their eyes met, he spoke, his words sharp like a knife.

"You will fail..."

As soon as he spoke he ran off, through a door on the opposite side of the room.

With a puzzled look on her face Hitomi ran off as well, choosing a different path. Her ninja counterpart could go his own way, she wasn't going to follow him and get ambushed by everyone and everything trying to stop him. He seemed to know where he was going though and she thought following him might be a smart decision, but she had other methods. One of the monks was till concsious, she could tell lby his breathing, but he was injured and in pain. there was a pool of blood comin from the back of his head, and she deduced that he, he could give he what she wanted.

"Who was that... Where is he headed..."

She had quickly assumed the identity of one of the monks, one that was lying on the ground, and the man spilled everything. He told her how the man had come in from out of nowhere, assaulted them, demanded the map that was on the ground floor in its own map room, and then proceeded to kill them off anyways. They had fought back and he took them out one by one, killing or knocking them all out. She had just regained consciousness a moment ago, but was in no condition to do anything.

Hitomi thanked him before transforming back and snapping his neck. She didn't want him getting up to get help, and she didn't want him questioning how she was him and he was there on the floor. She also didn't want him going to the afterlife thinking his own comrades had betrayed him. As she ran through another door she found her efforts in vain as an armed monk came directly at her, spear already thrusting, not asking a single question. Making a quick decision, she ducked under the spear, letting the shaft run against her back. Quickly throwing her handseals together she slammed her hands on the ground, causing a layer of ice to quickly form, unbalancing the monk almost instantly. A combination of punches and kicks floored him, and as he got up, a second combo left him grounded and unconscious. On she ran, running into three other monks in three different rooms, all f which met similar fates.

As she came to the next room, Hitomi was instantly hit with a sense of panic. Her ninja senses were kicking in and at a good time too. The instant she stopped moving, the very ceiling in front of her came crashing down, a giant pillar of rock impacting the ground with enough force to shatter and squash a person with little effort. Looking down she couldn't find any trip tiles or anything that had set it off, it had just come down. Slowly, with an obvious grinding sound, it came back up. She reached her hand out and it came down again, and then slowly rose. Taking a chance she stuck her hand out again, while it was going up, and nothing happened. Not until it got all the way up did it come down again.

"Got it..."

She tested her theory one more time, just to make sure that she was right, and then as soon as there was enough space, she ran, straight under the pillar of death, and watched as it came down harmlessly behind her. Taking a breath of relief, she was almost scared shitless when the ceiling only inches from her came down. Adrenaline pumping and nerves on edge, she ran under that one as well, stopping just after it in case of another trap. Luckily for her there was none, only open space before the door. She took a moment to examine the trap, trying to find any clue as to when there would be another one. She was almost dumbfounded to notice that the ceiling was tiled, except for the traps, which were a large solid square of stone. That was what she would look for next time, and maybe just maybe she might make it out alive.

Crossing into the next room she was assaulted by a monk with a large sword, jumping out of nowhere to take her by surprise. A well placed uppercut caused him to drop his weapon, which Hitomi kicked out of the way. Fighting him ferociously, she found herself backed into the room with the dropping pillars again. She was between a rock and a hard place as he crept towards her, but she couldn't let one person stop her. It just wasn't going to happen. She somersaulted over him, kicking him as she flipped. He only stumbled backwards, preparing to charge her, but he had stumbled back one step too many, and before he had a chance to do much else other than raise his hands in defense, the ceiling fell on him, painting the ground with his body. Slowly the stone returned to its resting place as Hitomi moved on to the next room.

The room she had initially entered when she was attacked was different than most of the others. it was big, spacious, something like the room she had first met the other ninja in. At the opposite end there was a window and an outdoor walkway, but after thoroughly searching, there were no stairs. It was one of three great rooms, falling underneath one of the large domes in the building. there may have been stairs on the other side, but she did not have the energy to run the whole building looking for them. Plus, that other ninja was looking for the map too, and he already had a head start. She would have to take some risks, she would have to get down there another way.

Standing on the balcony she looked down, counting the floors. She was on the fifth floor, the map room was on ground level. If she jumped all five she would die. She could climb down using her chakra, but hat would take forever and leave her exposed for far too long. She was sure there were guards searching for any intruders. Her only option was an awning she saw on the second floor, it looked like cloth, and pretty taught. She had done it a million times in her thieving life, jumping out a window and onto one bouncing off. The act wasn't the hard part, it was the height. If she missed, she died. If it wasn't sturdy, she died. If anything at all went wrong, she would either die, or get seriously hurt. If the guards found her, hurt or not, she would die. Still, she was a shinobi, and risks needed to be taken.

"Geronimo!"

The rush of air was exhilarating as she free-fell, and as she tucked her legs in she prayed that she would feel the tension and resistance of the sheet catching her. It did, and she flipped off, landing almost gracefully on the ground. Her heart was beating out of her chest almost, but she smiled at the thrill of such a jump.

The rest of the journey nearly mirrored the previous part, Hitomi entering another large room, battling the single monk into the next chamber, a chamber filled with falling ceiling traps. The monk, and another met their end there, crushed under the weight of their own stupid traps. She had manged to go unscathed yet, and as she entered another long chamber, a trio of monks sought to tarnish that reputation. They surrounded her, not knowing that she excelled in that kind of situation, and they slowly circled her, weapons drawn. They sought to kill her, to erase her from existence, and to stop her from obtaining whatever it was that she was after. She couldn't have known that the only treasure this temple offered was the map, especially by the way they fought, but indeed that was their motivation, and they would fight to the death to protect it.

Quickly, Hitomi produced a volume of water from her mouth, surrounding herself in an impenetrable wall. As the wall died down the monks laughed at her failed attack. They quickly charged in, ready to destroy her, only to find that each of them was being restrained by the very water they laughed at. A simple technique hidden behind a more grand one, they had become victims in her little trap. As she touched the trail of water that sought to dampen her feet, the chakra in it reacted, tightening around the monks and creeping upwards towards their mouths. After but a moment she released the technique, the monks suffocated or drowned as they struggled to free themselves. Looking around, thinking of picking up one of their weapons she noticed a rope hanging from the ceiling. It seemed to run the entire height of the building, she had remembered catching a glimpse of it through a slotted wall on the fifth floor. Taking note of it she moved on, unarmed, responding to the sound of struggle in the next room.

Again, for the second time that night, Hitomi walked into a room to find a dozen monks laid out on the ground, either dead or unconscious. In front of an altar stood the other ninja, reaching for the map that somehow sat floating over a lighted pedestal. He quickly turned to her, abandoning grabbing the map, only to taunt her again.

"The map is mine ninja. You will not defeat me..."

Almost immediately he assumed a fighting stance, his golden eyes setting against Hitomi's like a clash of fire and ice. His opening attack confirmed it as he summoned a circle of fire around Hitomi. She had an idea how the attack would work, as it ebbed for a moment, giving her time to douse it with her water style water wall. As the curtain of water fell, her opponent was already on her, flying at her with a flaming fist. She blocked, preparing to take the burning impact, only for him to dissapear in a ball of flames, a moment later striking her in her unguarded back. The blow burned her, and sent her tumbling forward, only for her body to dissapear in its own cloud of smoke. as the smoke cleared a monk fell to the ground, a hole burned in his back. Behind the ninja one of the monks on the ground rose, uppercutting him before turning back into Hitomi. He hit the ground hard, but got up quickly, laughing it off as a good hit. he resumed his fighting stance, dissapearing again in a puff of flames, appearing above hitomi before she had time to react with another counter of her own. She rolled back, avoiding the overhead smash and performed a sweep kick, again uprooting the opposing shinobi. Not being so easily downed, he performed a back handspring, landing facing Hitomi, hands coiled in preparation to throw something at her. She was already running at him, trying to capitalize on her previous attack, but as she saw his body coiled, she recognized the motion. Jumping to the side, she narrowly missed a flying kunai, attached to some sort of rope. Before she could even react he had snatched it back, and was throwing it at her current position.

"Come here!"

His voice echoed as the kunai missed stabbing her, but instead coiled around her shoulder, and he yanked on it, dragging her forward. A swift roundhouse kick sent her flying backwards, hitting the ground as hard as he had earlier. She quickly got up as well, laughing off the kick also before launching her own attack. She ran up to him, as he did to her, and just as it seemed they would strike with the same attack, Hitomi ducked down, aiming a punch at his midesction. inversley, as soon as she ducked, he somersaulted over her, alnding behind her, though facing backwards. He turned, aiming to sweep kick her, and in turn she jumped upwards, delivering a jump kick to his face. the blow sent him rolling, and as he began to stand up, she attacked him with a barrage of punches to the face, and a roundhouse kick. he stumbled back, oviously enraged, and charged her, only for her to jump back, producing a clone of herself. he ignored the clone, aiming to swat it out of the way, only to find that the moment he touched it the clone reverted to first water, surrounding him, then ice, freezing him in place. Almost as quickly as he was frozen she could see the ice begin to sweat, something about his fire nature melting the ice. Her opportunity was limited, and so she simply attacked again, aiming a roundhouse kick at his head as hard as she could.

The kick shattered the ice, sending him falling to the ground helplessly. This time he stood up slowly, clearly dazed from the kick and the fall, and probably feelingthe effects of fighting so many monks throughout the night. She again rushed him, and though he tried to dodge, her attack was faster, catching him in the side of the jaw and the temple before he could react. After the first two hits he swung at her, but she ducked and hit him again. And again. And again. As her last hit left him dazed and broken, she knew that he was done for. A quick one two step, a leap, and Hitomi connected a sort of back flipping spin kick with the ninja's chin, his head snapping back with a nasty cracking sound. He fell to his knees and sat there, his body frozen from trauma. As Hitomi walked towards him again he only managed to utter a pained "Spare me...", a plea to her merciful side. Hitomi granted his wish as she turned, grabbing the map and making her exit.

She encountered no more monks as she made her way to the room with the rope. Tucking the map in her robes she climbed the rope, up five stories before exiting onto a balcony just above where she had entered. Her arms burned and her mind was filled with question, the main one being who was that ninja and how was it that he was after the same thing she was after, at the same exact time. None of that mattered at the moment though as she saw that there was another rope that for some reason or another led directly over the walls and into the clear zone on the ground below. Grabbing a small clip, she attached it to the rope, and jumped, riding the makeshift zipline to freedom. As soon as she landed she removed her mask, allowing her now sweat matted blue hair to breathe. Pulling out the map, she started to examine it, noting that it showed a location she was very familiar with, the shinobi territories. There were five locations marked off, each in a different country. She recognized very clearly the water country, though the location on the map was a complete mystery to her. Before she could exaine it further though, a familiar voice interrupted her.

"Good Job Hitomi "

Looking up she saw Miyako Harumi, standing infront of her, hand outstretched. There was something off about her eyes though, they were the wrong color, pitch black, and the way they stared at her, at the map, it was very unlike her. The doubt didn't show on Hitomi's face, but now she was aware that there was something off. Miyako had been a shinobi before, as was Hitomi, and deception was a thing of commonplace, especially in the water country, but why. Why would she deceive her, and about what? Hitomi took a more thorough look at her as she approached, hand outstretched for the map. Her whole demeanor was wrong though, she wasn't her cheery self, or even her serious with a smile. There was no love in her body, no love in her eyes.

"Who are you?"

With a smile, whisps of smoke trailed off of her and her entire body structure changed, from female to male, from golden skin to ghostly white. For a second this new person, this new man, his voice retained a bit of Miyako's, but as it faded, so did all doubt that something strange was going on.

"I'd like to again congratulate you on retrieving this map for me. My name is Quan, and though you didn't know it, this was not a chance meeting. You were recommended to me by some powerful people."

He pointed to the crest on her chest, the mark of a clan long thought forgotten and yet more alive than any would know. She held a puzzled look on her face, one that told that even she didn't know why she wore what she wore. He laughed acreepy laugh before stepping closer.

"That crest that you wear, it is the crest of the Lin Kuei is it not? They are the reason you are here, the reason you were allowed to exist in the Sky country, the reason why you have made it this far. Did you think your training was for nothing, did you think your missions were just for fun. No matter who you think you are, where you go, or what you do, you are Lin Kuei, and your services can be bought, at any time."

The look of shock was written all over her face. She had been hired, without her knowledge, for a job, that she didn't know the real truth behind. She had been trained, initiated, and had thought it all just a part of her life that had been washed away. And now, it all surfaced again. She had questions, plenty of questions, but one still stood out to her, Lin Kuei or not.

"Who was that other ninja... he was after the map too."

"He was just another ninja I hired. For insurance. Just in case you failed. Your clan and his share a certain rivalry, Well, shared, one you may not have been aware of, but that is all in the past now...."

He smiled a devious smile, one that could only mean something that he wasn't telling her, but he started talking again, before she could ask any other questions.

"Your reward, is this..."

He tossed her a bag that jingled as she caught it. Peeking in, She was surprised to find coins, gold coins, solid gold coins.

"A pleasure doing business with you, Hitomi."

In a strange swirl of white smoke, this person vanished, leaving Hitomi alone, in the Demon Country, filled with more questions than she had when she left, needing to find her way back to Sora, and back to the comfort of things she knew.
