Sewers and Rats

" Hitomi, Hitomi, Hitomi. Who would have thought I'd be seeing you again so soon..."

A familiar face appeared to the young woman who sat as casually asshe could, though she knew what kind of trouble she could expect just from this man's presence. The scent of evil permeated the air as his black soulless eyes fell upon her blue ones, traces of the souls of many others floating eerily past as though they were windows.

"It seems as if the protection around the Hacikujaku temple extends to the locations on this map as well. If you wouldn't mind retrieving something for me... I can supply you with another stone... the one I gave you before seems... drained. Or.... If there is anything else you would like... i might be able to assist you with that."

His voice was very creepy, like doing business with the devil himself. Still, Hitomi had a taste of the power of the stone, and the riches that came with her heightened ability. She had fallen back into some of her old habits, stealing and such, and even though she still was a faithful Sora shinobi, the people that were not on her good side saw a Hitomi that no one wanted to see. She still didn't trust this man, but he hadn't proved himself untrustworthy yet, and so she would do what he asked, and hope that there was no trickery this time.

It was just for those reasons that Hitomi found herself straddling the entrance to an abandoned temple in the water country, the vegetation overgrowing the entrance easily. As she opened the doors she smelled the musty scent of mold and decay. She was sure something had died in here, but the smell was the least of her worries after she saw the first roach, and the first rat. She hated those two animals most of all, and just knowing that she was going down and not out made her skin crawl a little more than a little.

Searching for the entrance she finally found it, a covered well with a seal on the top. A quick freeze and a pound sent the cover crashing to the sides, releasing another wave of the musty mold. She straddled the well, feet around each edge, and slid down, the chakra in her hands and feet keeping her from simply sliding down to her doom. Still, she was surprised when she hit the bottom and found a full sized doorway, leading to some sort of sewer system, and a single guard monk, dressed suspiciously similar to the ones from the Hachikujaku temple. Taking note of it, and the absence of any other ninja, she summoned up a torrent of water, knocking the monk down onto the hard metal grate. Another torrent of water created a set of shackles around his hands, feet, and neck. She could get the interrogation over with bright and early, and maybe get some directions too.

The monk spilled everything, he spilled the location of exactly what she was looking for, something called the Lucid Heart, and he spilled that it was located at the center of the sewer system, which was an abandoned temple to a water god. He told her that the sewer system was both a maze and very straightforward, with the path to the Lucid Heart's chamber directly forward and down, but that there were three keys that she would need to open it, and those were located around the system, the paths constantly guarded. He couldn't offer her any more in exchange for his life, but for her it was a decent start. She found him to be truthful and so simply tightened the water restraints, causing him to black out. She spared him an ran on, further into the series of tunnels.

At the first intersection she noticed a long downwards chamber and a rope. Across the way she spotted another monk and a long tunnel. She had an option, but the fact that he had said the keys were guarded by monks she figured she should follow the path of obstacles instead of trying to avoid them. Fighting with the next monk she knocked his weapon from his hand and then fought him, knocking him out. She moved on to the next tunnel and was surprised to find no grate, just water flowing on the ground. She could spot a monk in the distance, and he seemed to be standing above the water but she wasn't sure because of the lack of lighting. As she stepped forward she noticed something black swimming in the water. On closer examination it seemed to be a sort of snake fish thing, and even though she thought it was creepy, it looked pretty harmless. She just sort of creeped past it, trying to avoid it, and she thought she had until it grazed her leg and she was instantly in pain, a surge of electricity running up her body and shutting down her functions for a moment until the creature broke off its contact.

"Eel!"

She quickly jumped away, trying to regain her breath and composure. As she moved forward she picked out a few more of these eels and decided that this was probably a good path since it was so protected. She used her chakra to try and hold on to the wall and climb over the water. She thought about walking on the surface, but she doubted that would help avoiding the eels, so she just tried to avoid the water all together.

It was a quick but dangerous trip with the amount of eels, but she made it and managed land on the platform in the distance, only to find a single monk guarding absolutely nothing. Behind him there was only a solid wall, and nothing that said it was otherwise. After she defeated him she searched the wall in vain for some sort of trap door or hidden latch, but only found a small jar on the side, some drink that the monk had been sipping. She left it and moved back, across the stream of eels, and towards the rope she had seen earlier. Looking up the shaft and down it, she decided to try up. it would be easier to go up early, when she was fresh, as opposed to going up it later, after her muscles were strained with fatigue.

Up she went until she reached the top, where a ledge and another tunnel greeted her. Inside a single monk sat, ironically meditating. Her footstep on the metal grate roused him but she quickly dealt with him, keeping the noise to a minimum. Reaching the end of that tunnel she was faced with a choice, up or forward. She chose forward and again was met with another monk and a dead end. This time however, there was a strange golden mural on the wall of a man fighting two dragons. He stood, in the face of immeasurable odds, unphased and unafraid. She liked that mural, she would definitely remember it for a while. Turning back, she took a long deep breath and went up the rope, towards the unknown.

Again she went up untill she came to a strange door. It was square instead of the usual round ones, and it was more of a shaft than anything else. Swinging the rope she managed to reach it and climbed in. Inside there was not much to it, just a square tunnel, but at the end, there was a triangle shaped recess in the wall. She took note of this, seeing nothing else, and returned to the rope, climbing even higher. This tunnel was long, a longer climb than the others had been, but as she reached the next opening she took a sigh of relief as the rope was attached to the ceiling. She was at the top floor.

Walking forward, she did not meet any more monks, instead, another choice. Up again, or forward. She cursed silently before deciding to skip going forward and just go up. When she reached the top she was faced with another choice. There was a left tunnel and a right, the left, it was square like the one she had seen before, and the right was round, like most of the other ones. She picked the left and jumped into the shaft. At the back she found a a little square piece, and remembering the recess she had seen earlier, she snatched it. she jumped to the right tunnel, and was greeted of course, by two monks. The first she outmaneuvered and kicked down the shaft. She could hear him hit the ground with a dull thump. the other monk she thought to fight, but when she saw that the tunnel was a dead end, she just went back down the rope. He didn't follow her for some reason, and she continued down. as she reached the bottom she peeked down the pathe she had decided not to take, and found nothing of interest in there. She went back down the way she came, down the long tunnel and the rope, past the other shaft and down to that ground floor, where she made a left, and went back down the rope that she had come up.

She traversed the maze of tunnels and ropes, trying to get some sense of where she was, making the choices of left right up and down. If it wasn't for her mind and the various monks that she left unconscious n certain tunnels, she would have probably been lost for ages. It may have been just that maze of tunnels that made what this temples sewer hid so protected. She was tired just thinking of how much more of this she might have to go through, but she was glad she had decided to try and cover "up" first. Finally, she went downa tunnel and at the very back, there was a square shaped recess. Pressing the key she had obtained into it, the very wall slid up, revealing another room. She entered the large chamber, possibly three stories tall, and the door closed behind her. It was tall, with no ladders and no rope but there was some sort of opening near the top. Before she could analyze the room any further, the holes in the wall, holes that she had seen everywhere and had sort of forgotteen about, they began to pour water out, flooding the room.

"Shit shit shit shit shit... wait..."

In the center of the room there was a pedestal, and though she had thought it attached to the ground, it was floating on top of the water. She quickly stood on the pedestal, hoping that it could support her weight and keep her from drowning. She balanced herself in the center as it rose, and after a few minutes the holes stopped spewing water. She had sat down to meditate and when she opened her eyes, the pedestal had floated towards the opening that she had seen from the bottom. Jumping into the room she found the tunnel very short, but inside a small triangular key was on a stand. As soon as she picked it up the water began to drain, and she had to make a running jump to land on the pedestal again. She didn't fear swimming, but somehow, through the drains, more eels had come into the room, and now the water was a hazard. When if finally got to the bottom though, there were no eels. She wasn't sure where they had went, but she took it as a blessing, as well as the wall she had come into opening back up for her to exit through.

"Shit... Now where was that triangle supposed to go."

Back up the ropes he went until she reached the room with the triangle recess, the first one she had seen in this crazy maze. As she pressed it in the wall slid back, and a torrent of water came down. At the end of the tunnel a door began closing over the square entrance, and Hitomi quickly slid under it, catching the rope as she came out. Confused for a moment, she went back down the ropes, only to find that a chamber that she had passed earlier, one that was just an incredible drop, it had become filled with water, and a pedestal was floating across it towards her. Again, the water was filled with eels, and so she had no choice but to jump on the pedestal, but she was rewarded with another key, this time a crescent key. She hadn't seen a hole for that particular key, but there were still a few other paths she hadn't taken. Still though, she felt like she had accomplished something, since there were only three keys. Now she just had to find the last door, and the treasure would be hers, technically Makoto's, but who was counting.

"Okay... one more door. Where haven't I gone yet... where, where, where."

Back out the way she came, she realized that she had only not traveled one path. Another grate-less tunnell filled with eels. There were a few pedestals in the room, and a very high ceiling, meaning she had only one real choice.Jumping pedestal to pedestal, she managed to make it to the end, where another rope led up. At the end of that rope a single room was left, with a large wall on the back, painted with a large crescent. Within that mural she could see the recess where the key went. her main issue though, was that the room was filled with monks. Six of them, each armed, and they were ready to fight her. This room had no water in it, a bit of luck for them, and when one hit a switch on the wall, the entrance she had come through sealed itself. There was no running now, only her goal, or her defeat.

The fight was fierce, the monks displaying something that she had absolutely not seen at all, chakra manipulation. Some shot water, others wielded weapons made of water, and they used them formidably. She took quite a few hits, but their use of water proved to be their downfall. With the amount of water they used, they almost invited her to use her own water and ice techniques, which proved to be fatal to them. Blades and spikes of ice ripped through flesh and bone as the water ran red. When that last one fell she sat there for a moment, her breathing ragged, and her body tired. She was glad she was at the end though, now all she had to do was grab the Lucid Heart and get out. Real simple.

As the large door slid open an ominous humid sensation washed over Hitomi's body. IN front of her, in the middle of the room stood a single individual, male, muscular, and seemingly made of water. As he turned she noticed his blatant nudity, and the fact that he had neither weapons nor equipment. He simply was. His transparent blue body was only interrupted by a strange glowing blue gem located within his body, none other than the Lucid heart that she had been seeking. His eyes fell upon hers and without word or warning, he began to attack. His steps were silent on the metal grate, each step bringing him closer to her, and he was much faster than she had expected, seemingly gliding across the surface to deliver a strong punch to her midsection. The hit was hard, like being hit with a waterfall and she nearly lost er composure, a second hit knocking her in the chin and onto her butt. this creature was relentless, attacking her with jets of water which hit the ground leaving dents in the metal. She began scrambling, trying to find some sort of footing, trying to get a chance to fight back, but every moment was filled with another attack.

She barely had a chance to counterattack, simple slides and punches not even getting close to him. By the time she had figured out an attack style that worked she was already bleeding under the mask, and heavily bruised. Only her most basic of attacks, her fall back, her Iceball, seemed to be at all effective. Because of its makeup it couldn't be deflected by the water attacks, and it hit, freezing the water creature solid instead of just encasing him in ice. Hitomi attempted to simply reach and grab the stone, but when she touched the ice it shattered, and the stone fell into the water. A moment later, the water reformed into this water creature, and the fight resumed. Every time she froze him and he broke, the same thing would happen, she just couldn't grab the stone fast enough. Still, her tactics seemed to have some effect, each time taking longer for the creature to form, and by the fourth time, his movements were much slower, slow to the point of her being able to attack with normal punches and kicks, splattering him and causing him to need to reform, draining the jewel of its energy even further.

With each increasing hit hitomi felt more strained, her body growing tired and her breath becoming ragged, but her opponent showed the same signs, its movements becoming sluggish, and its body not holding together as it should. A simple punch left the creature without a portion of its face, which did not seem to regenerate. A kick and Hitomi's leg went straight through, separating the creatures torso from its legs. THe legs slowly melted away, and the ydid not reform, giving Hitomi the chance she needed to strike her final blow. As she completed the last of her handseals a white frost like air emmited from her hands, and the body of water turned to ice. Without much else, the ice broke around the gem, leaving it glittering on the metal surface. As she picked it up she could feel some sort of warmth from it, like life. She squeezed it in her hand, preparing to put it in her pocket and make the return journey, when a green swirl of energy appeared on the ground, slowly coiling on itself until it was the size of a person. She had a feeling she knew who it was, and simply waited for him to step out, soulless eyes and all.

"Well done Hitomi. It seems you defeated the water spirit guarding the gem. Something about that spirit's presence was keeping me from entering, as soon as it was gone, I was able to come in. I can tell you don't want to try and find your way through that whole maze again, do you?"

She tried to keep her composure, but she was dog tired, and her outfit was both wet and tattered from the many fights she had encountered. She handed him the gem, telling him to get her out of there, and in a flash of green they were back on the surface. She was too tired to really want anything at the moment, her body simply would not let her think of a prize that was worth her troubles. Removing her mask, she felt the damp hot air, a change from the cold air she felt before. She had no intention of trying to make it through the outlying jungle and finding her way back home, but hse didn't want to waste her favor on something like that. She truly couldn't decide, but she could see the impatience in his face.

"Give me another stone... and send me home."

She took a risk asking for two things, but the way she said it almost sounded like one thing. He smiled at her and waved a finger, admiring her ambition.

"Alright... a stone and a free trip home. Here you go."

Whispering some strange incantation, he placed his hands infront of him, and before them appeared a large swirling vortex, and the image of her home was right in the middle. He tossed the stone to her and instructed her to walk through. She did so and for a moment felt like she w as being yanked out of her body, and in the next moment she was on her own floor, a surprised Shura jumping out of her bed and staring at the portal behind her. The portal snapped closed and hitomi smiled innocently.

"What?"
