There weren't many things that brought about a cause for alarm within him, but there were a few. This was one of them. Umehara carried himself with the gait of a man with senility. He felt weaker, strained and less inert, as if his energy was being consumed from the very core of his body to the point that he could feel his muscles ache.

This was unlike anything else. It was scary.

His lungs expanded in a labored way as he tried to catch his breath. He looked up at the overcast skies, watching the dark clouds consume the sun, sapping much of the light from his surroundings.

His concern rested in the odd sensation that he could feel in his chest while he gripped at it firmly.

It was as if he could sense his own death.

"...Why?"

Umehara fell to his knees and crawled on the terrain like a child. It sickened him to think of what he was reduced to. The thunder crackled and the sudden rainfall pelted against his back while he made his approach to the edge of the nearby clifftop. His eyes sank as he gazed at the fall through his delirium. The vertigo made him vomit. Mask off, thankfully.

Lightning streaked the sky. His Keikaigan engaged, through which he detected a foreign gradient.

It was a shinobi. Any would suffice to finish him under these circumstances.

"No. Not now. Anytime but now, goddamnit."

Umehara knew he stood no chance at winning, but fight he would—that or stagger around.

He picked up his body, remaining dignity in tow, and turned around to witness the spectacle. And it was...

The world tilted and turned, the ground just didn't seem flat all of a sudden. It'd been like this for the past day or so. He knew it was coming. It was calling to him. The fear. The pain. The lust.
For the first time, Ulquiorra knew a sensation he often sensed in others. Doubt. He doubted himself, his own power and worth. Just what... what was this thing taking over him?

Tossing and stumbling through a land he could not identify, he sensed two others near by. One seemed to be fleeing. The other was stalking. Now, the hunter had become the hunted. The prey stood. An attempt at holding his ground. Ulquiorra stumbled from one side to the other, and then it happened.
He grabbed his chest with his right hand.

Too late.

Black chakra, with a green outlined tint to it, consumed him, spiraling around his body and masking his visage. Then, it completely made an orb around him, hiding him from all sight. When the swirling orb released, it fell like water down a new body that stood frighteningly in place. This clearly wasn't the same Ulquiorra.
The lines under Ulquiorra's eyes thickened greatly, extending to the same length of his jaw line. Two sets of wings had grown, one on his upper back, with a twenty foot wing span, and another pair at his lower back, extending downwards at an angle; a sixteen foot wingspan. A thin, long, tail had sprouted as well, capable of being used as another limb. His entire lower body became covered an a fur-feather combination, also covering his forearms, and reaching just below the biceps.
His feet took on a more claw-like appearance, as had his fingers; a more monstrous appearance becoming known. The whites of his eyes become green, and his eye color changed from green to yellow; where a more elliptical look took over, instead of the average circular pupil. Finally, two long horns extended out of the left and right sides of his head, completing the transformation.

In the blink of an eye, Ulquiorra warped to just behind the man preying on the other. Dog eat dog. His hand reached out as the man approached the younger looking boy, touching him in the center of his back. Before he could turn, before he could react, Ulquiorra forced a powerful burst of condensed chakra through the man's chest, opening a hole the size of his hand through his back. The hole made a clear vantage point for Umehara to see Ulquiorra's chest as the dead man still stood.

It took a second, but as the blood dripped from his wound and out of his mouth, he feel to his knees and then off to the side. Ashes to ashes. Ulquiorra stood menacingly before Umehara, yellow eyes showing no sign of compassion. No sympathy. No remorse. They were cold and dead, just as the body laid before them. The fear the invoked... it was paralyzing.

"Do you fear death?"

Umehara was facing his assailant now. They raised up a sword and prepared to strike. He calculated the movement and tried to make out whether or not he could avoid it or somehow use it against the attacker. His eyes started practically buzzing through his head, the electromagnetic detection sphere picking up yet another. Wonderful. Another.

As soon as he had picked up the presence, the signal faded. It became replaced by a much stronger one. It was a person quite close. The same person. The only rationale Umehara could concoct was a demonstration of blinding speed.

"What the f.uck?"

Each event seemed to blend together. One person had his place taken by a far more menacing sort. It was becoming more apparent now that he had low chances of making it out of the confrontation alive, and he accepted that with a weighted heart.

His eyes began to glow, though not from a doujutsu—it was the chakra. In an instant of the sword being raised, a foreign chakra signature became blasted straight through their chest. The blade tip impaled the dirt and rock. Umehara watched the glossy eyes of the assailant as their head trailed to the ground and smacked against its surface with a thud.

Only through the Keikaigan could he witness all of this at once. That was frightening in and of itself, but that wasn't all he witnessed. As soon as the man fell, his gaze met that of the demon. It was like looking into a mirror and seeing death.

Immediately he recognized the man from a description. This was a criminal. A monster.

It couldn't be. Surely not in the Lightning Country of all places.

"Do you fear death?"

Umehara stammered back. His foot dangled over the clifftop, but he regained his composure. He released a strained exhale and narrowed his eyes on the opponent. He wasn't a coward, nor would he ever be reduced to cowardice.

"So be it, Ulquiorra Cifer. No, I don't fear death. You'd only be ending the life of a tool made for war. Someone just like you. And if this is to be the end of my legacy, you will know the power of The Lightning Son."

With arms folded to each of his sides, Umehara tried to form a jutsu. The only thing he managed were sparks.

Which wasn't exactly good.

So the boy knew his name. Good. Ulquiorra's expression didn't change at all. He didn't care what he boy had to say, or what anyone had to say for that matter. His only motive now was the utter destruction of all things. At the core, Ulquiorra believed that the world needed to be cleansed and healed. Stripped from all the bad things and purified. To achieve this goal, blood would have to be spilled. Someone would have to bare the burden of power and responsibility, to take the lives of all those who would do the world harm. Those who would senselessly cut down others, oppress the weak and stain the memories of the past with violence and destruction. To do this, they themselves would have to become the very demon they wished to wipe away; they'd erase it all and create a more perfect world.

Yet at the same time, becoming the last obstacle in an otherwise peaceful world.

This belief was still strong within Ulquiorra, though a bit twisted now... It was true he aimed to purge the darkness; however, now it seemed fitting to erase everything. There was no hope left. Only the reality of death. His nihilism was strong, but it was only the precursor to the destruction he would bring.

Before Umehara could compete his hand signs, Ulquiorra lunged forward, grabbing the young boy by his face with his right hand. His body snapped around in the direction the boy was facing - 180 degrees to his own position - and launched Umehara head first about ten yards out and into the hard ground.
In a fit of extreme speed he stepped in the same direction and vanished, appearing by his side as he skipped across the dirt and stone, aiming one well placed kick into his stomach, knocking him away again.

The demon stood there with green eyes which resembled something more akin to a void because of their vast emptiness. The wings at his back outstretched for a moment before a gust of Fuuton shot out from beneath them with a powerful flap, lifting him two stories high with ease. "Then I will show you despair." Chilling, frosted words, tinted with malice. Placing his palms together for a moment, he slowly pulled them apart. When this occurred, a narrow radiating green energy formed between his palms, pulled to the length of six feet. One end was pointed like an arrow-head, the other frayed. Holding this lance near the frayed bottom, Ulquiorra wielded it in just his right hand.

"Lanze del la relampago."

They didn't have a chance to mince words. Within the maneuver of his jutsu, Ulquiorra had closed what little of a gap there was between them. Umehara felt cold fingers grasp around the diameter of his skull. In that moment, above all else, he knew that he was completely outmatched in speed. The realization struck like a punch to his ego.

As Ulquiorra shifted positions, Umehara became literally flung forward and into the ground. There was such an immensity of power that shielding with his arms would have made him unable to fight at all. He skidded along the jagged stone and minerals until his face resembled mincemeat. His clothes became torn at the chest and abdominal, his body scratched.

The assault continued.

Just as he regained some measure of his composure, Ulquiorra was on the prowl again, this time reappearing by his side to deliver a forceful kick into his stomach. The worst part was that he could see the kick, yet couldn't do anything to intercept it. Umehara gasped to regain his breath—which, by the way, was already difficult enough without Ulquiorra's help. F.uck.

His body clattered against the ground and he went tumbling after landing from the second blow.

Planting a hand into the soil and clenching, Umehara tried to stand on his own. He looked back up to Ulquiorra to take note of what was to come next, but the only thing he could make out through blurred vision was the green resonance of a spear.

He focused on his hand and initiated All Animate Creation: Spontaneous Armament. Instantly a spear of crackling electricity took residence in his palm, which he gripped with what remaining strength hadn't been sapped from him.

Good. At least his jutsu was operational again.

He stood on shaken legs, staring down the demon like a hero. Not that his bravery would help him win or anything.

"What caused you to reach a state like this, Ulquiorra? Do you think you have some sense of duty to uphold? You have no deities to appease with your needless sacrifice. Maybe you're just so desperate for a sense of purpose that you have to cling to some illogical ideal to validate your own existence."

Umehara chuckled through his words. The story was reminiscent to his own.

"I have been to a place where you are. If the circumstances were different, we could be friends."

A sense of duty? A purpose? Validation? No. These things didn't mean anything to Ulquiorra. At least now. Nothing did. "There is no meaning to our world. There is no meaning to those of us living there. We meaningless beings ponder the world, though the realization of meaninglessness itself means nothing." Ulquiorra pulled back his arm and launched the lance in his hand with great speed; however, it wasn't aimed for Umehara. Instead, it was aimed just fifteen feet in front of him, and almost right below Ulquiorra. When the lance met the stone of the mountain, it exploded violently, the unstable chakra used to form the weapon mixing together and causing an explosion. The destructive force was so great that it created a crater in the mountain side, isolating the small stone platform Umehara now stood upon and sending him and his platform tumbling down the mountain side.

The winds were fierce, both in the wake of Ulquiorra's attack and naturally at the height of the mountain. Ulquiorra's wings flapped once more, propelling him upwards more and forwards, watching as the boy fell.

Friends?

What a foolish notion.

Ulquiorra's hands met again, and he formed another lance which he wielded with his right hand. He was silent, watching, and waiting. Rubble, debris, and dust kicked up all over the place. He didn't need to see him though, he could sense him. He wasn't dead. No, he was a survivor... But for how long?

His words had no effect on Ulquiorra. At least he managed to get a response. There was no use in not trying again.

Well, assuming that he could manage to survive the next move.

Umehara watched as the green energy speared into the mountain crust. He could feel the tremors from underneath the soles of his feet, which told him as much as he needed to know—he was about to take a ride. The firmament split apart and separated his platform from the rest of the earthen surface, sending him plummeting down the mountainside.

He pushed away from the large piece of mountain that he had the privilege of being dragged toward the ground with and launched his lightning spear into it, shattering it in all directions. This cleared the way for survival.

"You sly bastard."

For as dangerous as this was, Umehara found himself enjoying the challenge. His face still hurt like hell though.

He forced the momentum of his body toward the side of the mountain, channeling chakra into his fingertips and feet. Eventually he was able to apply enough force to plant them down and grind himself to a halt. His face, still quite bloody, contorted into a determined expression and his doujutsu eyes narrowed. He propelled himself up the mountain in bursts.

Once he reached the edge, he pulled himself up to beautiful, glorious solid ground.

Ulquiorra.

"Imagine a section of land. Say, the average hidden village. It has a means for trading goods, a military, housing for its citizens, government buildings and monuments. It started off as a barren land without a purpose."

Umehara turned his head to the side and spat, trying to get the taste of blood off his tongue.

"We as humans define purpose. Purpose breeds meaningfulness. Requiring anyone but ourselves to define it for us is a handicap, and denying that we can create it altogether is a mark of impotence."

He sighed deeply and filled his lungs for perhaps the last time he would be able to for a long while.

"Nice technique, Phantom."

Watching as Umehara fought for his life, Ulquiorra allowed him to fight. He didn't move to attack again, or make it any harder for him. He just watched from above as that which was beneath him strived to save its own life. And as he rose to the top, his words fell on deaf ears. Ulquiorra's cold, incessant, gaze met Umehara like a bone chilling wind in the snow. "Why do you fight, when you cannot win?"

Ulquiorra lowered himself and drifted backwards until he actually levitated above the ground by about a foot and a half - now about fifteen meters in the distance. "When I kill you, what will it mean? What will change?" Speaking in riddles, he demon alluded to his previous point. "Nothing. It's all meaningless." Hoisting the lance above his shoulder, the demon phantom prepped his next attack.

Cocking his arm back with a half step backwards, he snapped. His body snapped forward, and like a catapult, he fired the lance with deadly precision at Umehara's face. The bolt fired with shocking speed, but even fast than that was Ulquoirra. By the time the lance was just a foot in front of his face, Ulquiorra appeared in front of the boy, leaning forward from a running/gliding position, his right hand pressed firmly against the left side Umehara's head.

Time could almost feel as if it slowed down for a second.

But when reality hit, Ulquiorra whipped Umehara's neck, grabbing his head and smashing him into the stone mountain wall in the distance. The lance traveled on, smashing into the mountain behind them and exploding with twice as much force and power as the first. Ulquiorra flapped his wings several times, leaping back and pulling himself away from the scene. His eyes were empty. And the only sound now, that wasn't the boy, was the toppling of the face of the mountain.

"I continue to fight because I refuse to lay down for you like a whimpering dog."

Ulquiorra persisted in responding with riddles. There really was no getting through to the man, that much was obvious. No matter what Umehara said, no matter how much he tried to reason and level, he couldn't manage to penetrate the deluded mindset. Basic human empathy was lost. Friendship, repentance, forgiveness and mercy stood for nothing. Well so be it.

For the remainder of their exchange, let all principles fall.

Umehara brought up a hand to wipe his forehead. In doing so, Ulquiorra launched the second green spear that had been created just prior to when Umehara made it to solid ground again. He braced himself to avoid it by craning his head and body to one side—but just as he did, his opponent was there with a hand planted on his skull.

He was jarred out of place and sent toward the nearest wall. The spear narrowly missed him. Umehara adjusted his body, perhaps out of instinct, and without handseals due to his bloodline ability, he conjured Shock Release: Oxidizing Palm. From this, multiple bursts of electricity released from his body and ruptured a large hole through the wall surface.

He soared straight through it, and he was freefalling again.

Once again the momentum of his body became shifted as he fell in the air until his chakra could latch on to the mountainside through the soles of his feet. He skidded to a halt, then turned his body in the other direction, proceeding to run up the side to again reach level ground. Controlling his chakra was a discipline he did not regret taxing himself to learn.

Umehara grabbed the ledge, then yanked himself back up. Their eyes met again.

"Stop making me do performance art, you son of a bitch."

This one, he was a survivor. He wouldn't just give up, and even when faced against an opponent so mighty, there was no hope of defeating him... He still found the measure within himself to survive. Against the adversity set stone-like before him, he just wouldn't die. Or quite. But why?

Ulquiorra couldn't quite understand this, but on the opposite side of that card he didn't really care either.

Umehara's reservation to sustain his own life did not make him untouchable or immortal, just a better doll to kick around for Ulquiorra. He would perish just like everyone else. This fact was undeniable.

As their eyes met, Ulquiorra's narrowed. He shot forward with vicious, and blinding speed and at once appeared just inches from Umehara, standing next to him. On Umehara's right side, Ulquiorra was facing the opposite direction, his right palm already positioned with a bent elbow and raised shoulder - aiming his palm to cover the boys face once more. "Perish." His words were bitter, with a thickness hard to choke down. Sharp words met with sharp movements, as Ulquiorra palm tightly gripped the boys face and hoisted him up into the air, before snapping down and driving him head first into the rocky surface on which they stood.

The entire transaction took place within just seconds; no time to waste or linger.

After Umehara hit the ground Ulquiorra reached down again, grabbing him by the chest and hoisting him up, spinning around three times rapidly before releasing him. And boy did he have some speed behind him.
Left untouched, Umehara was headed right on track to smash head first into a near mountain side just 50 yards out. But why not pour salt into the wounds?

Raising his right hand, Ulquiorra constructed another blazing green lance and positioned it above his shoulder; taking aim. He waited a second, two, and then stepped forward and catapulted the lance straight for Umehara's position. He'd need some quick thinking to get out of this one.

And Ulquiorra just watched the show.

Nothing was working. He had to think on his feet and take another tact.

"Do you get it yet, or is your mind clouded?"

Ulquiorra was close again. His face was grabbed and he could feel cold fingers tightening on his features. Umehara utilized the moment to string together a few rudimentary handseals; one of the only rare instances where they actually came into play with his repertoire. Hoisted up by his head, his body was slammed into the ground, trembling his skeleton.

The merciless assault continued.

Grasped and lifted by his chest, he was rotated and launched toward a solid wall. He made a full collision and his head careened off the solid matter, concussing him and making his vision blurry without delay. In the wake of his body sailed a luminous green spear. It pierced through his chest and and pinned him to the mountain face with a cacophonous bang.

The impact was great enough to leave cracks in the rock.

"The reason you can't kill me... the reason I know your name..."

Poof.

His body became replaced by a simple log. The spear dispersed and it fell to the ground.

Umehara appeared behind Ulquiorra, his mouth resting near the man's ear.

"...is because I'm not real. Fighting me is pointless. There's nothing to make perish."

He jumped back and away from Ulquiorra, landing near the mountain ledge. "But you're free to continue pursuing me if you feel like wasting even more of your time today." He offered his last bit of wisdom before allowing his body to fall backwards off the side. With his feet planted, he commenced to surf down the slope. It was a way to the forest.

With an undesirable effect, Ulquiorra looked on with harsh eyes. Not moving an inch as Umehara appeared and spoke at his back. Wasting his time? Time? Time? There was no concept of time at this point. Time was as relevant to him now as the dirt beneath his feet. Ulquiorra gave a slow, daunting turn, just in time to catch Umehara as he fell backwards off the cliff side. Not real?

He thought to himself briefly as the boy faded from view. He didn't have the capacity to care. His senses were sharpened like a new blade; he formed the ram hand sign and focused his chakra for a moment. The flow stopped completely momentarily, then his entire system revamped. The effect took only a second to apply, but would cancel out any Genjutsu that might have been placed on him. A second quick set of hand signs, and then his right foot slide forward, grinding against the ground. With that, a significant portion of earth broke out from the side of the cliff Umehara leaped off of. Easily thirty feet by thirty feet, and at least ten feet thick, a slab of earth broke out of the cliff side underneath the boy. Catching him and halting his descent, Ulquiorra's right heel lifted and then pressed back down onto the ground firmly. The earth was at his command.

Now flooded with his earth chakra, Ulquiorra could command the entire mountain to do his bidding. On his command, as soon as a single part of Umehara's body touched the stone slab, it coiled and funneled downards, twisting as it went and created a twisted cone-like trap for the boy. The space was tight and uncomfortable, and he'd likely find it difficult to breath.

Ulquiorra slowly stepped to the edge of the cliff, peering down over the edge to see what luck his trap had.

In his descent, the platform upon which his feet stood became manipulated and contorted in a way to trap him.

Earth Release? He chuckled.

He could feel the earth twist around his body like a cone, squeezing the breath from him. He eased his right arm up, in an attempt to force it through. That's all I need... Just one arm... He managed to bring it to light before it became trapped in his makeshift casket. Umehara exhaled in relief, though even that much was painful. Looking up, he spotted Ulquiorra, grimacing as a flash of light burst from his palm.

Shock Release: Solar Flare aimed to blind the phantom to a painful degree. Right after, he initiated All Animate Creation: Cloak and Dagger, spawning large tendrils of electricity from all around his body that, due to the natural advantage of the element, tore through the Doton trap like a hot knife through butter—blasting it into pieces and freeing him. He kept moving down the mountain, picking up speed.

"I swear to god, I need to stop finding these kinds of people."

Along the way, he intermittently lunged into the air as he moved down the slope, meticulously catching himself when he landed back down on the solid incline. This essentially prevented any kind of direct response from Ulquiorra as it pertained to his control over the mountain, or at least served as a defensive measure to avoid traps. Furthermore, it allowed him to gain momentum and cover more ground.

Reaching the forest was his goal. He had to keep moving and find a way to conceal himself.

Raiton release. Of course. As a Souton and Doton user, Ulquiorra always managed to find a Raiton user in combat. So the boy managed to escape that little trap; good for him. It just made things a little more interesting. The powerful burst of light caught Ulquiorra's eyes, but the culmination of lightning chakra did not go unnoticed; however, unfortunately, he couldn't hope to avoid the blinding flash. It hurt. It hurt a lot, but it wouldn't stop him. Rubbing at his eyes, he opened them a few seconds later; his vision blurred slightly. A feeling that was only temporary, he knew - the pain was nothing to him. He peered over the edge again, watching the boy descend and pick up speed. Leaping over the edge, he soared down, a falcon in a perfect nose dive, his wings tucked behind him and flattened to make him more aerodynamic. As he grew closer, he released his wings, fanning them out wide and halting his downward momentum. The abrupt change literally kicked his body upwards to a halt and much slower descent.

The boy continued down, and with a raise of his wings, Ulquiorra performed a lightning fast set of hand signs. Upon finish, his wings beat down with immense power, sending a powerful shock-wave of Fuuton down to the boy. Fuuton: Atsugai. The effect was something akin to an explosion... minus all the fire and actual explosives. The wind was as fierce as it was sharp, capable of tearing through the flesh and mangling limbs. Used reflexively as it was, it would give the boy a descent speed so great, he'd likely lose control. Essentially shoving the boy down to slap and press him into the ground.

Ulquiorra, on the other hand, allowed his black wings to gently guide him downward; cold eyes and sixth sense carefully watching for another burst of Raiton - if one was to come.

"Do not ask any questions. Don't tell me anything. You have no rights. The only thing you do have is the rope holding the blade of the guillotine, safely suspended above the necks of your friends. Make no mistake, woman. This is not a negotiation, it's an order."
