As the black snow hit Hannya's skin he could only feel betrayed as it simply sat there, hard, non moving, and solid. Of course it was cold, but there was something not quite right about it. He had smelled it before, he had been familiarized to the scent, and as the sizzling tag met the brunt of it, he slammed his hands together in the quickest set of handseals he had ever made. he was sure he had missed one until he felt the heat well up inside of him, and unfortunately, outside of him. The force of the explosion sent him rocketing backwards, through a railing, through pirates, through soldiers, and off the edge of the ship. He never even had time to counter the massive ball of flames produced by the Ice captain. It was a sneaky trick mixing in gunpowder with his blizzard dragon, one that hadn't been seen by anyone but his shipmates, and one that had never been survived by anyone it was aimed at.
Never until then.
Below decks The explosion in the engine room ripped t hat part of the ship apart, and with it went the rest of the ship. Two large pieces at first, but then subsequent explosions, from ignited barrels of gunpowder and oil, ripped the deck apart, the force ripping up the attached ship as well. Many people died in that instant, and the captain, who thought that it was all his attack, simply shook his head in dismay as he clung to a piece of floating deck.
Hannya's eyes flicked open, the inertia and force of the wind jerking him into consciousness. Around him there was nothing but debris, smoke, fire, and bodies, and lots and lots of air. Trying again to perform handseals, he corrected his previous timing issue and expelled a large amount of fire, a roughly oval ball of fire that floated for a moment before bursting open revealing a large bird made of pure fire. As the trail of flame from Hannya's mouth dissipated, the bird let out an eerie screech, made more unusual by the fact that it was simply a mass of flames and not a living creature. Under Hannya it swooped, catching him on its back as it soared off from the debris to more open skies, Hannya righting himself to a more respectable position.
"I wonder what caused all that...."
