Between Heaven and Earth | Hanya

Outside the walls of the major cities, the Snow Empire boasts a variety of climates and landscapes. From the frozen glacial desert of the north, to the deciduous rain forest in the south, the four provinces are fun to discover for those who can keep their wits about them. Wild beasts of primitive and dangerous proportions loom in the corners of even its most barren wastelands, and the criminal elements are almost free to roam anyplace that is secluded from civilization.

Having avoided the blast, Hannya now stood face to face with seemingly the only man who could put a stop to him. The man was aged, there was no doubt about that, but the look in his eyes, the feel of his very presence, he had once been a shinobi. There was no way to tell what rank he was, but by the sheer virtue of him being a captain Hannya had to assume that he was at least Jounin rank. It had been quite some time since he had seen someone so strong, that was of course if his assumptions were correct. Tee mans eyes never left Hannya as he moved his hand, Hannya only realizing that the black swirl that was his attack had never subsided. Instead, it behaved like a whip, twisting and curling until the head once again faced Hannya, this time from the right. It swooped down, attempting to ram him into the ground, and it was all he could do to move out of the way, and yet his dodge was not entirely successful, a portion off his leg frostbitten and burning.

"It didn't even touch me...."

Indeed it hadn't, the sheer cold from the blast being enough to cause him pain. A quick heating of his hands remedied that situation though as he passed them over his leg, returning it to its normal movement. This time, he kept his eyes on the head of the dragon, which had simply skimmed the ground and returned to the sky. He expected another pass, but this time, the dragon simply shot straight up into the sky, exploding in a hail of black snow. Glancing back at the captain, he found his hands in a handseal formation, and his only thought then was that he was [badword], and that snow that was falling couldn't be good.

"Die!"

A single kunai with a lit tag screamed towards Hannya, but its path was off, it was high, it was aimed for the black snow that was falling from above.

Michio flew unmarked into a page right out of fantasy. Dragons and ninjas were the very combination he hated most about snow country. The whole god forsaken nation was riddled with them from top to bottom to the point where he wondered just how they managed to stay away from critical detonation on a daily basis. From the looks of things Hannya more or less had the situation under control. Granted, that command of the situation seemed to teeter along the lines of survival. The swordsman wasn't one to interfere within the grounds of another combatant though. So, he strode in the opposite direction of the conflict.

The infernal beast awakened a sense of self-preservation that usually overrode the majority of his decisions. Luck could only get a man to a certain point in life. All the rest depended upon a little bit of good old intuition. Besides, fighting a battle he couldn't segregate into a category of advantages and disadvantages didn't sit well with his tactical mind. It was with a heavy heart that the swordsman walked beneath the deck, slowly collecting an assortment of barrels in his aerial aura of weaponry.

Pockets of violence could be found throughout the hallways as the clash between friend and foe still raged on across the Esmeralda. Rarely, the conflict would spill into his general direction and savagely ended in one of two ways. The foe would turn around to scope out easier prey or would fall beneath his feet in a pool of their own blood. Nothing barred his methodical procession towards the bowels of the ship with the exception of the reverberations of the battle taking place above.

When Michio finally made it to the engine room he had managed to collect several barrels full of oil. A panel of escape was cut out in the side of the ship which would soon be filled by his body plunging through the only safe route as the room erupted outwards with tunnels of fire.

Lost in the devastation would be the form of a single swordsman rocketing towards the snowy expanses of the earth.

As the black snow hit Hannya's skin he could only feel betrayed as it simply sat there, hard, non moving, and solid. Of course it was cold, but there was something not quite right about it. He had smelled it before, he had been familiarized to the scent, and as the sizzling tag met the brunt of it, he slammed his hands together in the quickest set of handseals he had ever made. he was sure he had missed one until he felt the heat well up inside of him, and unfortunately, outside of him. The force of the explosion sent him rocketing backwards, through a railing, through pirates, through soldiers, and off the edge of the ship. He never even had time to counter the massive ball of flames produced by the Ice captain. It was a sneaky trick mixing in gunpowder with his blizzard dragon, one that hadn't been seen by anyone but his shipmates, and one that had never been survived by anyone it was aimed at.

Never until then.

Below decks The explosion in the engine room ripped t hat part of the ship apart, and with it went the rest of the ship. Two large pieces at first, but then subsequent explosions, from ignited barrels of gunpowder and oil, ripped the deck apart, the force ripping up the attached ship as well. Many people died in that instant, and the captain, who thought that it was all his attack, simply shook his head in dismay as he clung to a piece of floating deck.

Hannya's eyes flicked open, the inertia and force of the wind jerking him into consciousness. Around him there was nothing but debris, smoke, fire, and bodies, and lots and lots of air. Trying again to perform handseals, he corrected his previous timing issue and expelled a large amount of fire, a roughly oval ball of fire that floated for a moment before bursting open revealing a large bird made of pure fire. As the trail of flame from Hannya's mouth dissipated, the bird let out an eerie screech, made more unusual by the fact that it was simply a mass of flames and not a living creature. Under Hannya it swooped, catching him on its back as it soared off from the debris to more open skies, Hannya righting himself to a more respectable position.

"I wonder what caused all that...."

It was a lucky departure from the ship that saved his life once again. Had the man not been up to his usual antics of mischief, he might have ended up charbroiled on what was left of the ship. The very concussive force of the many blasts rocked the airwaves, buffeting Michio into a downward spiral. Slight adjustments with hishoutai righted him to send the warrior speeding into a flat angle away from the wreckage of the two airships. A sweep of the natural world technique slowly brought to life what had occurred to cause such a catastrophic end to both ships. The timing of it all caused the young captain to whistle at his good fortune. Perhaps, the day wouldn't be an entire bust.

In the back of his mind, Michio calculated his estimated payout for the day. From the snow country government he could claim the kill for the Tuskiganee Pirates and the destruction of the Black Esmeralda with its crew could be collected from an underworld book keep. Adding to this total would be the chests of treasure he had stolen from his very employers along with the voucher in his pocket paid out from the pirates. A grin crawled across the face of the trickster. If he played his cards right the entire venture would net him in the area of a 1.5 million ryo gain.

Chakra enhanced eye-sight adjusted itself to the influence of the wind while Zouka Michio shifted is flight path towards the probably landing point of his hidden treasure. By this point the body of the pirate must have been miles behind the final end to the dueling airships.

"Now, let's see." Michio mused while turning over to view his collected arsenal.

There were quads of swords, polearms, and axes while he had double the amount in shields along with projectiles. The swordsman was practically a flying arsenal of death. Anyone who wasn't worth his weight in gold would have a hard time shooting this particular birdie out of the sky. The thought made him think of Hannya. A small measure of guilt rested in his chest before being extinguished by one of the rules of mercenary work. Living was never a guarantee in their line of duty.

If you could reach the next battlefield unharmed that was a bloody bargain.

As smoke and debris finally began to clear Hannya could see what the wreckage looked like as a whole. The ships were toast, bits and pieces falling at a speed incalculable. Parachutes floated in every direction as far as the eye could see, and below, a vast expanse of white that simply looked like nothingness incarnate. For a moment he forgot about everything, about the battle, about the seal, about the pirates and the soldiers. For a moment he just existed.

Then he saw Michio.

The body was unmistakable, a trail of everything possible following him. He was quite far away from the wreckage, floating gently through the sky off towards some destination, probably as far away from all of the chaos as he could get. If not for the seal on his body, Hannya would have let him go, but instead the bird pointed its body and shot off with a burst of flame, Careening towards his foe at breakneck speed. Dropping his body low to the flaming bird, Hannya drew his swords, hiding in the light of his own technique, ready to strike in a quick and deadly explosion of flame and heat.

He spotted it.

Just a couple more miles in the distance he could see the small treasury of gold he had collected from his former employer. Adjusting his angle of descent, the mercenary slid easily into his desired trajectory. In the distance he could see the wreckage of the two ships. The thought passed through his mind concerning the families he had possibly destroyed from the engagement, but the fact of the matter was a man shouldn't step onto the battlefield unless they were prepared to lose it all. That's the reason he clung to for relief from guilt. Besides, the same men would have ended his journey through life if they were given the chance.

Michio sensed his former comrade without turning his gaze back onto the colossal bird. He still continued on as if he was unaware as the creature and its master closed in on his back. In the meantime, the man stayed perfectly still as if he were continuing along his original path with zero knowledge of his current predicament. A small part of him was happy he got the chance to continue the fight. Although the man like odds, he hardly liked to leave things such as swordplay to chance. Fortunately, he would soon have his answer to this particular question.

The rest was in Hannya's hands.

Releasing the grip he had on his bird, Hannya simply slipped to the back of the bird gently floating off of it as he sent it screaming forward at his target. The sheer size of the bird would block him from vision, and the concentration of chakra would block out his presence behind it, but from what he remembered, Michio wasn't using chakra to track him. Its not how he did things, and it wasn't a concern of Hannya's. In fact, the only reason he had even dropped back was to give himself time to prepare his next move.

"Nitoryu: Tatsumaki!"

Pointing his swords forward, towards his opponents position, Hannya began to spin, spin and spin and spin, his body turning into a drill ready to pierce through the heavens, or more specifically Michio as he tried to deal with the giant mass of flames that was approaching him at high speed. Coupled with the high speed wind he was flying through and the layer of combustion chakra that radiated from him, he began to glow brightly, just as he entered the vicinity of his own attack, pulling some of the flames from it, creating a flaming tornado around himself.

He fell for it.

Michio waited to the last couple seconds of the attack to completely rotate his body while making an arched cut through the air that would curve out then come crashing down on his target. Even as Michio was setting up for his next consecutive assault the effect of his Fox Tunnel was already pulling all the heat from Hannya's attack and turning it into his own. Every shield with the exception of two that he collected fired off to ram into a spiral around the spinning swordsman before comboing into Tachikiru, a five meter thick wave of lightning chakra rippling through the air towards his enemy. The mind jarring jolt of electricity would either hit after Hannya's own fiery blaze rammed its way back onto its owner with increased power from Michio's own manipulations or close on wherever the ninja decided to run; albeit he would be low on options in the sky.

This wasn't the end of his assault for his body surged forward with a shield gripped before him with his left. The combination of sword's spear and his own flying ability pushing him to Hannya's position with speed only heightened by their close proximity. The armor penetrating shield bash would be heavy enough to break bones, but the attack would only end when rammed a lance down to his opponent's body; although his aim was to do non-lethal damage. Despite their fight, the young captain hardly wanted to see his old comrade fall in what he saw as a meaningless battle.

However, only time would tell.

Spoiler:
Name: Fox Tunnel
Rank: A
Range: [ 0 - 50m ]
Jutsu Type: Kenjutsu//Ninjutsu
Elemental Affinity: Hishoutai - Rocket
Clan: -
Description: This is Michio's greatest counter technique outside of his mind during combat. In the place of hand signs the initiation of the Fox Tunnel technique requires the user to stay perfectly still [ with the exception of outside manipulation ] for at least five seconds. This waiting period can be skipped if the user makes five hand seals and waits at least two posts before using the technique.

What occurs once the prerequisite conditions have been met is that that user will make a cut through the air in an arc that directly relates to the path of their designed "tunnel". This creates an electromagnetic pathway formed from the secondary effects of Rocket element's shockwave to redirect an opponent's A ranked or lower ranged attacks that are of either a fire nature [ including advanced elements with a fire combination ] and other attacks with an increased temperature [ including base chakra techniques ]. Fueled by Rocket chakra the attack will then surge forth with increased damage due to speed along the path originally created by the weapon until it eventually hits the end of the design with all the fury of the original attack plus a little extra for the trouble.

Name: Combo
Rank: B
Range: -
Jutsu Type: Weaponry//Supplementary
Elemental Affinity: -
Clan: -
Description: It's common knowledge that some motions when combined in succession create less strain on the human body. Following this form of though, Zouka Michio, created a style of ninjutsu that created a greater efficiency in his movement quality. This technique allows the user to combine various techniques in a chain that will lower the overall cost of its original design if performed alone. In order to make a combo chain and activate the technique three techniques must be used. The last two techniques used will be lowered by a single rank in chakra cost [ the exemption to this being A & S rank techniques ]. An example of this would be using three C rank techniques. Normally that would mean CCC but using this technique it equates to CDD. The issue with this technique style is the fact that you have to use multiple techniques to get the bonus.

Name: Sever - Tachikiru
Rank: C | B
Range: [ 0 - 10m ] [ 0 - 25m ]
Jutsu Type: Kenjutsu
Elemental Affinity: Raiton - Lightning
Clan: -

Description: Much like its name this technique exists for one purpose and one purpose alone, to cut. The jutsu occurs in two forms. The first can be accessed by emitting a combination of raiton chakra with the ying principles throughout the limbs. This will effectively double the cutting power of a strike. At its current level the use of this ability allows Michio to slice through any material less dense than wood like butter. The second form of the technique allows the user to make a heavy strike which sends a thin wave of raiton chakra in the direction of their opponent. If hit with this they will feel a mind jarring jolt. The first application can be used freely by the young boy, but the second is limited by his chakra capacity.

[ Chuunin ] - Now capable of cutting through material less dense than steel like butter. Chakra wave is now five meters in diameter. Original cost.

Name: Yariken - Sword's Spear
Rank: C | B
Range: [ 0 - 10m ] | [ 0 - 40m ]
Jutsu Type: Kenjutsu
Elemental Affinity: Raiton - Lightning
Clan: -

Description: The effects of this jutsu are fairly simple. By combining the effects of both its base kenjutsu and Raiton chakra they are capable of moving in a singular direction at a rapid pace. The name originates from the spearhead image of chakra that forms around the user when issuing the technique. After releasing a set amount of Raiton chakra their bodies will surge forward in a singular direction. Usually this will be followed up with some sort of slashing or lunging strike to an opponent immediately after their movement has finished.

[ Chuunin - Spearhead now electricutes those who come in contact with it. If lunge is used the point of the attack is armor penetrating to the point where it can pierce things a class higher than steel. ]

The spinning motion he was using had its upsides, it was a powerful attack that could rip through trees, and with the added fire element could badly burn anything that was close enough to have to dodge. It was versatile, using his own body's power and not chakra to rotate, thus increasing the variations of it that could be made. Still though, it did have its weaknesses, the main one being the lack of strong vision and directional tracking. Hannya's choice to use it after he sent his bird forward was a counter to this, giving him something bright to focus on, but it was also a part of his inevitable demise.

He could not see his opponents counter, he didnt see his bird slowly disappearing into nothingness untill it was too late, and his high speed rotation caused him to spin wildly when he broke off the attack finally noticing something was wrong. Still, it was quite late for that as the force of his own attack slammed into him from above, heat washing over him at an intense and almost unbearable level, even for him. Even with the layer of combustion chakra he had on him to keep him from being burned while riding his own technique his skin was on fire, and his body was in intense pain.

He slowly tried to pull his hands together, to for some type of seals. He had a technique to counter this but it hurt so much to move, something about his fire was different, it wasn't all his chakra, a fact he could only think of in hindsight, wondering how it had harmed him in the first place, but hindsight was never useful without second chances.

He didn't have time to think anything else out as a bright flash of light appeared out of nowhere, slamming into Hannya and dazing him out of his defenses. A second later his opponent rammed into him with the force of a cannon, breaking bones and armor all in one move, a single audible *crack* ringing through the sky. Hannya's eyes were glazed over and dull, empty even, as he took the full force of the attack.

Hormones raged through the warrior's veins as he pulled back from his foe, dulling the killing intent laced through his actions with the calm demeanor of reason. Still, he had held back. It was a fault that many of his senpai spoke would one day kill him when his luck ran out. Yet, even as he floated, thousands of feet above the earth, he couldn't bring himself to give the final blow. The bloodied lance was pushed into the aura of weaponry which floated about his body while he lowered his shield in what he presumed to be an end to combat. The battle raged further in the heavens between remnants of the airship crew; too far away to effect the two swordsman who drifted ever closer to a predetermined destination.

Michio used the time of incapacitation to catch the broken fighter in his chakra in a motion that would keep the shinobi from falling to his death. There was no use in sparing the man if he died minutes later due to his own fading consciousness. Nature flowed through both mercenaries, feeding Michio the condition of the two combatants. He had suffered quite a few minor lacerations and bruises over the course of the battle. The majority of them had come from the man not even a full eight meters from his position. There was a renewed respect for the swordplay of his former comrade only born from crossing blades. Some day later when wounds had healed he would have to thank the man for teaching him another valuable lesson when it came to the game of life.

Their descent was finally complete onto a small patch of snow with trails of crimson leading down the slope of a hill. Littered in a random assortment was the gold he had stolen from the confines of the pirate ship. Hannya was set down within the vicinity as he moved about to check each of the chests. A wide grin crept over his face as if he could already see his personal bank account increasing just by being in their presence. A mild grown drew his attention towards the pirate that had been jettisoned along with the treasure for safe keeping.

"Oh..god...kill me, now." He was a mess of broken limbs where bones poked out at odd angles. That being said, with luck, the pirate would survive to live another day.

Michio looked down upon the man from the top of the hill. He slung his shield over his back, then folded his arms across his chest. "What did I tell ya kid? Aren't you glad I saved your life by throwing you off the ship?"

A groan of pain was his answer.

Gently they floated down, wind screaming, sparks falling, and blood dropping from the sky like tears. Below, the snow no doubt would show the preceedings of the danger that loomed above, but for now all seemed calm and clear. The young mercenary had bested his foe, he had found his treasure, and had survived the ordeal.

All was well.

*Poof*

Hannya's body was enveloped in a layer of smoke that quickly drifted away, revealing two large sections of wood, clearly snapped in half at the midsection. The wood was charred, cracked, and all sorts of other things, but a person it was not.

"Nice trick kid... But I have a few tricks of my own as well...."

The sound was impossibly close, closer than it should have been able to have been without Michio's noticing. Still, if he turned around he would see the battered burned clothing of a warrior, a mask cracked across one eye, revealing the hard stare of years of death and destruction. His swords were at his side, though they could easily lash out, slicing the boy in half horizontally, but that was not his intention.

"Seems like you ran away with quite the haul, more power to you. That's not what i want, its not why i fought you, and its not something that matters in even the least bit to me. Turn around."

His voice was static, not dangerous and not weak, not naive and not condescending. The words were just that, words.

Hannya's shirt had been burned open, revealing the series of bands that wrapped a round his torso, an obvious testament to his bondage to the sky captain's service.

"Until you are dead, this seal will not come off, and if the captain or his lackey were to die, the very power of my own body would engulf me, burning me to cinders. I'm not telling you this so that you can use it against me, though I know you could if you chose. Instead, I emplore you to consider me an ally. And allies help each other out....."

"About time you revealed yourself." Michio left his arms folded underneath one another, gazing out into the white expanse of snow country. In its own way, he could see why people had become fond the nation. With the exception of the detestable cold it really had its merits. A small smile made his features seem borderline devilish, an aspect picked up from Kaitou, as if her were inviting the swordsman to advance. His aura of weaponry had been trained on Hannya's location even before his "miraculous" appearance. "Tsk. Always got to kill a ninja twice these days."

His mannerisms weren't hurried in the least. Digging into his pockets, the young captain withdrew a rolled blunt of Tsuuki's greatest brew. It was only after taking a long drag on the amazingly constructed herb that he turned his profile to his old comrade. Serene blue eyes of a boy who had grown up, since six, on battlefields such as this pierced to the core of Hannya's being. The fact of the matter was that there was very little that swept underneath Michio's sixth sense and should such an occurrence happen there was his seventh sense; the eighth was just simple bonus for being who he was. That's what it meant to be Rikugou. In more ways than one they were more noisome than dealing with a hyuuga when it came to sensual perception.

Embers floated off the edge of his death stick to drift carelessly into the rising storm. "So, what you're telling me is you need my help." His laugh was deep and hearty, "Damn! You have a funny way of showing it, man."

It did give an explanation to what had been off when he had inspected Hannya's body on a deeper level. Granted, at his level he wasn't sure whether or not this was due to the pirate or some other hidden power. Not to mention there had not been enough time to do a thorough examination in the heat of battle.

"Two questions." Michio blew a question mark from his lips with a grin, "How do you know the pirate captain wasn't bluffing? And if he isn't, what makes you think he isn't already dead?"

Yet again, these guys proved that they were of a different calibur, trophys from an age that had passed, and yet its remnants lingered on, trapped in the ways of yesterday. They were warriors, shinobi, mercenary, it didnt matter, their very existence was to fight, and to kill.

"Yeah, so I've heard. At first I was just going to disguise a body as you and bring it to him, I had no quarrel with you, but honestly, what fun is that. What kind of warrior shys away from a fight"?

They finally had a moment to themselves, no gunfire, no soldiers, no pirates, just them, and that guy attached to Michio's treasure. Hannya dropped one of his swords into the snow, a small trail of steam rising from it, traces of his chakra still lingering around it. Reaching forward he removed his mask, showing the curt little smile that he sometimes held. It seemed as though their fighting was done, he could feel the tension in the air slowly evaporating. Clipping the mask to his waist, he began to answer Michio's questions, to the best of his ability.

"I'm not sure if he's bluffing or not, but either way, if he was dead I would know. Either I'd be dead too, or the seal would be gone, and it's not."

Looking up he wondered what had happened to the captain of the ship. That seemed like the kind of guy to survive this, and he also seemed like the kind of guy nobody wanted on their trail.

"So what would you suggest?"
