Shoot to Thrill ~~~> | [Seishin]

Outside the walls of the major cities, the Snow Empire boasts a variety of climates and landscapes. From the frozen glacial desert of the north, to the deciduous rain forest in the south, the four provinces are fun to discover for those who can keep their wits about them. Wild beasts of primitive and dangerous proportions loom in the corners of even its most barren wastelands, and the criminal elements are almost free to roam anyplace that is secluded from civilization.

"It's going to keep following us."

Asoka finally had enough breathing room to take in the context of the situation when they entered through the trees and the dragon took to the skies. She and Ninoya were being pursued by a predator much more imposing than a shinobi, and there was no foreseeable way to combat it to cause significant enough damage to kill it or even make it flee. It wanted their heads.

Well, Ninoya's head.

But feeding Ninoya to it wasn't an option, so it wanted her head too.

"Dragons are very powerful creatures. A large number of them attacked Yuki a few months ago."

She tried to think back, shaking her head after not recalling any of the events. She was off training at the time.

"They all seem to have one element, as well as a massive amount of chakra. The air around them becomes saturated with their chakra, especially if they're in attack mode. Hence the temperature drop from Frostbite up there.

Hyoton? Wow. Not much I can do against that head on.

"But he's a young dragon. There are other ones that are larger and stronger. That's why I've been able to escape him every time. Though that doesn't mean he isn't a threat. If we stay in the woods and keep running we should be able to lose him."

Upon hearing the explanation, she gave an uneasy grunt at the prospect of facing even bigger dragons.

"You mean there's even larger ones than that? That's freakin' crazy!"

Just picturing going up against one gave her a shiver. Even the younger dragon bested her size by a factor of ten. With the realizations at hand, Asoka tried her best to recollect back to how she even got sucked into this mess in the first place, perhaps to justify it to herself, but at the moment her memories were failing her. Too much on her mind as the duo plotted an escape from their scaly assassin.

Behind them, Asoka heard the sound of growling. With no other warning, several large, muscular wolves with fur as bright as the snow itself tore through the ground and aimed to make the girls into a meal. She gasped, hearing something from afar.

"Oh god. I know you heard that. Something wants to catch us at the ground level too."

This made escape through the seclusion of the forest a lost option. As chakra poured into the feet of the wolves, their speed picked up. She grabbed Ninoya and hoisted the girl upon her back. "Alright, I want you to hold on to me, and promise not to let go." With the girl secured and hanging from her by her legs and arms, Asoka took the restraints off her base speed and started bolting through the forest.

She leapt for a tree, scaling it upwards until they were at the treetops. There were no other options; face the dragon right away or try to outrun the wolves. The dragon spotted them almost immediately, but Asoka was on the move again. It aimed a blast of chakra and shot. She lunged from the treetop, planting her feet onto the next one. The apex of the tree she left was blasted into pieces, and those pieces were frozen over.

"Arrows," her new nickname for Ninoya. "I realize how stupid it is and that we're probably gonna die, but I want you to aim your bow—along with whatever else you have at your disposal—and fire at that thing. See if you can manage to hit something tender. If you need ammunition, reach into the satchels at my waist. I'll be your legs and you can use my shoulders to aim, so go!"

The dragon swooped in, but Asoka glided away, skillfully balancing on her newest platform. This left a perfect opening to shoot.

"The strongest Katon specialist in our village, maybe the world, couldn't compete with a full grown fire dragon." The S-ranked shinobi Kurado had been hurled across rooftops and beaten out by the awful beast. Just the dragon's presence caused fires on wooden structures to begin.

Head turning, Ninoya looked back to the pack of wolves there were quickly making their way to the duo. More chakra manipulating creatures-- Ninoya would make it a point to never step foot in these woods again.

"I'll try." Doing as she was told, the archer held tightly onto her companion. Legs wrapped around her waist and arms dropped over her shoulders, she attempted not to scream as Asoka began racing above the forest. Ninoya felt like a pinball in a machine.

"Gyoo!" The beast opened its maw and released several sold spears of ice in an attempt to make a frozen kebab out of the girls. Luckily, Asoka was too fast to allow that to happen.

Ninoya wanted to keep her eyes shut so she wouldn't have to look at the terrible dragon. But as soon as the witch mentioned "arrows", it didn't take long to realize the meaning behind what she had said, Ninoya opened her eyes. It seemed like a well aimed shot was their only option. And it had to be powerful.

"Tender spot? I doubt that thing has any..." She quieted, realizing she had to at least try. The underbelly was no good, even any exposed skin was still tough. Arrows Ninoya had previously fired merely went a fraction of a centimeter into the beast. Useless. "...okay. Let me try something."

One arms still wrapped around Asoka, Ninoya pulled an arrow from her back holster. After a little trading off between hands, the archer managed to quickly wrap three explosion tags near the center of the arrow. After years of experience, Ninoya had determined three arrows to be the limit. Any more and it would really slow down or throw off the arrow's trajectory.

Tilting her head so it wouldn't poke her friend, Ninoya placed the arrow in her mouth for the time being. She performed a couple hand signs and then merely touched the arrow, strengthening it with her own chakra. Then, the archer slapped together a few more signs. This time she squinted as electricity began pulsating through her right hand once again. With less chakra it was harder to control, but Ninoya managed to push the Raiton chakra into her right index and middle finger, this was the same attack she had attempted to use on Asoka earlier.

Fingers still sparking, Ninoya used her other hand to pull the bow from her back. Leaning back a bit from Asoka, Ninoya was using her shoulder as a sort of rest for bow-holding hand. Now pulling back on the string with her electrically charged right hand, the tagged arrow was put into position.

The plan was to fire off the arrow, and then with her hand having released the arrow, she would point her index and middle fingers at the beast and send off her Raiton technique into the beast as well-- the attack following right after the arrow. But where was a good opening?

"That's it." Ninoya's eyes widened as Asoka avoided the dragon and found a balanced footing on a nearby tree. She had an idea for a tender spot. "Sorry if this is loud." The archer watched as the dragon repositioned itself and headed for the two girls once again.

"Come on you son of a bitch!!" She screamed, looking directly at the dragon as her right hand begun to shake. "Come!! On!!"

"Gyooo!!" The dragon roared right back as it drew closer than ever.

Calm down. Focus. Focus...

The softer tissue of the dragon now exposed from its open mouth, Ninoya released the string of her bow as the strengthened arrow sailed straight for Frostbite's gaping maw. Immediately afterward, Ninoya fired a concentrated streak of lightning from her fingertips. It zipped straight past Asoka's noggin.

~~~> ~+~>
Boom!
Arrow landing somewhere just above the tongue of the dragon, Ninoya's Straight Shot zapped the same general region, simultaneously causing the thrice tagged arrow exploded.
Wings sputtering and plumes of smoke rising from the beast's mouth, it diverged from its path and down toward the forest floor, taking out several trees along its path. It gave a few raspy howls as ice particles sprayed from its mouth. Not nearly dead, but definitely stunned.
"Come on, come on." Ninoya said, quickly adjusting her bow to her back once more. Her right hand felt as if every nerve was being pinched. "It'll be down for a bit."
Spoiler:
Name: Concentrated Bow and Arrow ~~~>
Rank: D
Range: Direct Contact
Jutsu Type: Yumijutsu
Elemental Affinity: --
Clan: --
Description: In a pinch, especially in close combat, Ninoya may need to resort to fighting hand-to-hand or with a weapon. If she has no weapons but her bows and arrows, she will use them to fight up close. To help with this, Ninoya will push chakra into her bow and/or arrows to give them more "substance" and power; this will allow her to fight using her arrows and bows like direct contact weapons, rather than ranged weapons. They will also be less fragile and not as easy to break.
Name: Straight Shot ~~~>
Rank: C
Range: Close (0m ~ 5m), Mid (5m ~ 10m), Far (10m+)
Jutsu Type: Ninjutsu
Elemental Affinity: Lightning [Raiton]
Clan: --
Description: Once the required hand signs are complete, Ninoya will charge the index and middle fingers on her right hand (the hand she uses to fire arrows, and the fingers she uses to release the string on the bow) with lightning chakra. Ninoya will be able to shoot a concentrated streak of lightning from her index and middle fingers, with the streak having a range of about twenty meters; after this point the technique will be considerably weaker and merely disperse upon hitting anything.
Given that Ninoya is an archer, she will pretend to draw back the string on a bow with her right hand, and support the bow with her left. This allows her concentration and focus. Once she "releases" the invisible string with her right index and middles fingers, she will simultaneously fire the Straight Shot from them.
Mark.
"Nice combo!"
It was a direct hit and all the dragon could do was plummet to the ground, having its equilibrium from the blast sucked up enough for its flight to be derailed temporarily. Asoka reached into her pouch and fished out a couple of smoke bombs, moving across the trees until she was standing above where the dragon was. She readied herself. The dragon was coming to. Asoka was waiting for something.
"Come on, come on. It'll be down for a bit."
Asoka didn't listen. She had something else in mind. Her intention wasn't to keep the dragon off of them for a little bit. She was aiming to completely disorientate the thing and allow for their prompt escape. She only needed to time things just right.
"Gonna need your help for this one, Kaisoku."
Energy sprawled around her body, taking form like a bird stretching its wings for flight.
"Here it comes."
The dragon shot its piercing gaze up at the girls, then it took off, coming straight for them. Asoka jumped into the air, reared back and launched the smoke bombs with as much accuracy as she could manage. The bombs popped open as soon as they impacted the face of the dragon, leading to a violent, pissed off roar. The wolves, enclosing upon the dragon, were smacked against the gust.
Asoka grinned. "It's over. We're safe now. Hold on tight, Arrows."
She casually turned, then started moving. A light blue glow trailed behind her as her body became overwhelmed with the celerity that the spirit within her granted. Her synapses increased, processing everything occurring much more handily. She was easily moving twice as fast as before, covering the treetops and causing the leaves beneath them to stir and break off. In no time at all, they reached the end of the forest.
Placing chakra into her legs and feet, she brought her arms to her sides in order to secure Ninoya's legs around her waist, then leaped off the edge of the last treetop. After a bit of graceful freefalling through the air, they were headed to crash into frozen water. Asoka impacted, bending her knees and remaining stable due to the forethought of having energy course through and strengthen her lower extremities.
The dragon, still fighting itself in the forest surroundings, had lost their trail.
Asoka walked on dry land, unlatching Ninoya from her figure and giving the archer a moment of reprieve.
Bringing an arm up, she wiped her forehead and sighed.
"That was sure fun, huh? How are you feeling? You okay?"
Her thought was immediately cut off by the sensation of something rumbling underneath her feet. The tremors occurred in random intervals, affecting some parts of the ground more than others. Looking down, glowing lines traced outwards from their feet, with the foreign energy signature piercing through the thick layer of earthen crust—the only thing separating them from that which lay beneath.
"...Seriously, what now?"
Eying the smoke bombs the witch pulled from her pouch, Ninoya gave her a worried look. "What are you doing? We need to go." Throwing some smoke bombs at the dragon wouldn't do anything now.
"What is this?!" She yelped, watching the energy form around Asoka. "What the hell are you doing?!" Ninoya debated shaking the woman's shoulders, but her right hand pained her so much she could barely even hold on to her.
Before taking off again, Ninoya noticed that Frostbite was missing a good portion of one of his larger fangs. Had she taken a closer look she would've noticed a few of its teeth on the side were also chipped. The archer had done some permanent damage to the beast. If she thought the dragon had a vendetta against her before she wouldn't be happen the next time it found her. Ninoya would do well to stay a stone's throw away from a village at all times.
"Geez!" Ninoya shouted, expecting Asoka to have fallen through the frozen water. Either she was very skilled, or very lucky that the ice was so thick.
Feet on the ground again, Ninoya took a few steps to a tree and leaned against it. "Fun is certainly one word..." She rubbed her right hand, running her left thumb across the palm. "It feels like my hand has been struck by lightning." Another Straight Shot and Ninoya was looking at serious nerve damage. Perhaps even "chakra nerve" damage. Either way, she didn't have much time to even think about nursing her hand.
"Dragon's don't cause this!" Ninyoa immediately responded, wrapping one arm around the tree. She looked around, it seemed like this quaking was going on all around them. Luckily they weren't near a snowy mountain. "I mean, I've heard that before the dragons were trapped underneath the ground, but I don't think this is one of those situations!" Shamans, powerful humans who could manipulate chakra like shinobi, were the reason for the dragons rising. Two shinobi landing on the ground wouldn't have risen a beast like that.
Bursts of light seemingly tore through the earth beneath the two female's feet. Whatever was happening was giving off a lot of unique energy. "Should we run again?" Ninoya asked, ready to jump onto Asoka's back at a moment's notice. At this point the archer just wanted to get out of the wilderness.
She watched the energy lines radiating from the ground carefully. They moved in a rhythm from their feet and continued outwards until they faded. Asoka gave a light hm sound and took a cautious step forward. Again the light moved outwards from where her footfall landed. It seemed that the energy was tracking their location. She also noticed that the rumbling was stronger whenever one of them moved.
"I'm not sure running would do anything in this case. I have no clue what it is, but it seems to be following our movements with pinpoint accuracy. Further, it seems like the tremors respond to it. Like, I felt it more strongly when I took that step."
Reaching into her satchel, she retrieved a small med kit and popped it open, prying through all of her assorted items. Inside she reached for a vial filled with a gelatinous substance. With reached over and handed it to Ninoya, offering a warm smile to the archer along with it.
"This here is an ointment natured with healing chakra. Rub some of it on your hand."
It certainly wasn't a solution to fatal wounds, but taking care of some cell damage was cake.
Putting her kit away, she refocused on the surrounding energy. It took up residence around her feet to the point that, the longer she stood there, she felt more and more ensnared. It was frightening in a way, and it felt like some powerful entity was trying to coerce her into being pulled under. She decided to test the waters, so to speak. Bending her knees, she jumped high into the air and landed hard on the surface.
Nothing at first. It offered the pause Ninoya needed to mend her hand.
"Huh. I guess I was wrong."
[...]
The ground underneath their feet started creating violent reverberations, comparable to an earthquake. Asoka wondered if she could have caused it, but it just didn't seem feasible for someone of her meager stature to shake the terra firma to that extent. She turned to the left and a gigantic, expansive wall shot up from underneath the snow-filled earth, with large kanji symbols on its surface: 停留 (halt). Looking to the right, an identical adjacent wall emerged. Looking toward the north and south yielded the same result. They were trapped.
"Wait, really? Did I really just cause this? No way. That doesn't even make sense!"
You stupid, stupid kunoichi. Look what you got yourself into now. Man, one thing after another.
Asoka moved some more, but there was no shaking or anything of the sort. The enclosed walls offered a large area for them to get comfortable in, but not much else. Each of the surfaces were light beige, with the same yellowish lines pulsating in vertical paths.
Beyond their midst, a cloaked and concealed figure approached the internment area.
"Prey."
Ninoya looked to her feet, cautiously raising a foot and taping the ground with it. The ground beneath her dimmed and then lit up again. "What in God's name..." She looked to Asoka. "How is that even possible? Is the ground beneath us alive?" That seemed like the only likely explanation at this point.
Taking the vial, Ninoya gave it a glance over before glaring at Asoka. "Ointment?!" Her right hand suddenly tightened into a fist from nerve pains. "I don't want any damn ointment! Let's worry about my hand when we're out of this mess." Classy as ever, Ninoya stuck the vial in her waist holster. A piece of her wanted to put on the healing medicine, but she had already made her point.
"Look," Ninoya said, her head tilted toward the treetops surrounding them. "We can stay off the ground if we--" She heard rustling and turned back to the witch, who had just rocketed into the air, sans broom. "Idiot! What are you doing?!" Hands on her hand, Ninoya watched in horror as Asoka landed back on the ground, expecting the worst.
Nothing at first, Ninoya remained speechless as she tried to figure out the right words to scream at Asoka.
Rumble!
"What's going on, what's going on?!" Stumbling from the sturdy tree, Ninoya nearly tripped. "What did you just do?" Before either could get a grasp of the situation, or run, four massive walls surrounded them.
"Is this some sort of trap?" Ninoya looked from Asoka to the eastern wall. Giving it a kick did nothing, the wall was too dense. Lightning and arrows were pointless to even bother trying. "It is. We're trapped in here."
With all the noise that had gone on, it wouldn't have surprised Ninoya if the dragon-- or any dragon for that matter-- was heading forward their location. Hopefully they were far enough away from any terrible beasts, though.
Looking up the glowing walls it didn't look like there was any sort of roof or barrier blocking their exit if they just climbed out. "We can climb out, can't we? Or is this weird energy stopping us?" She examined the odd glowing coming from the four walls. Ninoya wasn't in the best health to be taking any risks trying to climb up the strange structures. "Even if we can't you can jump that high, right? Come on, let's just get the hell out of here! I've had enough of this f.ucking forest." She blew a few fiery strands of hair from her face.
"It doesn't seem like there's anything stopping us from escaping from here. Might just be an ambush point. If that is the case, then there's likely something waiting for one of us to go up on one of those walls."
Asoka thought about a little bit more and then decided. She would be the bait.
"Okay, I'll go up there first to check around. Fingers crossed I'm not knocked on my keister."
Taking a deep breath in, she centered herself and exhaled sharply, widening her eyes and taking off. She jumped up high into the air, reaching up to the ledge of the wall and just managing to attach herself enough to pull her body up to the top of it. Ninoya was sitting pretty at the bottom, which gave Asoka some rough measure of exactly how high the wall stood. It was pretty darn high.
I gotta wonder what the purpose of this is. Even so, I probably should...
Nothing.
At least, not right away.
She turned around to face Ninoya again in order to respond to her directly. "Seems to be okay. I wonder why they put this wall up—" Asoka was frozen and she couldn't speak anymore. Her head slowly craned northern. Something wasn't right.
Cold, destructive steel ripped through her. The assassin at the end of the weapon pushed her off the ledge, and she plummeted. Asoka was pale and as cold as the large serrated blade plunged through flesh, blood and bone. Her complexion and expression were lifeless, as if no longer completely human. Unable to utter a single word, the body took up space in Ninoya's vicinity, playing the role of a useless heap.
"One down..." came a voice vibrating through the energy lines within the surrounding wall, creating a booming effect for Ninoya to feel. The hooded figure encroached further and fell down into the space that the walls left. A sinister chuckle reverberated, enclosing around the archer as the footsteps of the figure drew nearer and nearer. Its hand extended, yet another massive blade springing visible.
"Don't even try to escape. With me in the middle, these walls are set to explode as soon as you touch them."
Ninoya had to face the man alone.
Arms folded across her chest, Ninoya watched her companion leap to the very top of the one of the massive walls. Incredibly impressive. Despite being very fit and agile, Ninoya felt old and out of shape when she watched Asoka move around. Not even just scaling dozens of meters with ease, but how just moved regularly. She had a spring in her step.
"What?" Ninoya looked where the witch had suddenly set her vision before looking back to her. With a giant wall in the way, Ninoya wasn't going to see crap. "Is everything all--" The archer was speechless as her friend's body fell to the ground.
Thud.
No graceful landing, no rebound, just the terrible awful sound of her hitting the ground.
Lifting up the back of her head, Ninoya looked into the still-open eyes of the girl that had been so full of life moments before. "Come on, get up!" She seemed so invincible, there was no way she could have died so easily to a mere sword. Ninoya refused to believe it. "God damn it! You coward!"
Facing facts rather quickly, Ninoya stood up to face the assailant and left her friend on the chilled ground. Of course, moments after she found herself backing up to the southern wall. This man had killed the witch so easily, what hope did she have against him? Especially in this state.
"What do you want?!" She screamed. "Huh?! What is it?! You don't even have a reason, do you? Just killing us senselessly, is that it?!" Tears were welling up in her eyes now. She didn't want to die, she didn't want her friend to die. "Did you think that my friend was some sort of..." Her mind raced back to the elk she had slain earlier. "...animal." Her voice trailed off.
Ninoya brought a hand up to the southern structure, mere centimeters from the glowing bomb. "How big will the explosion be?" She looked the man dead on, no other options were ideal. "Will it take you out? Hurt you, at least? God I hope so. Stay back or I'll do it, I'll put my palm right on this wall. I swear. 'Cause I'll be damned if I let your disgusting blade be the thing that does me in."
Playing smart was the only way out of this now. It was the smartest she could play, anyway. She was low on chakra, exhausted, and up against an impossible opponent. This looked like the best way out.
"What'll it be, then?" Her cold eyes never moved from the man. Arrows felt as if she was in control. Even if it was just for a moment, maybe her last moment, it was good.
The man continued chuckling, signaling that he wasn't concerned in the least.
"The wall will incinerate any material thing that touches it, just so long as I'm standing in the middle of it after it's been raised. I would remain unfazed by your attempt. There is no issue with telling you its secrets, seeing as you're about to die. It's useless to fight against it. You're snared in one of the most devastating kinjutsu that the Hidden Star Village wields."
The man extended his arms, influencing the chakra signature in the construct to make the walls start expanding further outwards. He grinned, then brought his arms in, causing the walls to collapse until the space between them and its surfaces became lessened. "As you can see, I have total control over this jutsu, making it the ideal ambush point." The wall was returned to its normal dimensions.
"Go ahead, if you want to make my effort easier. I already have a brain to work with in that brat you call a friend."
The blade was raised from his sleeve and he approached the archer further until he was standing in the center of the space.
Asoka silently grimaced and reached up, grabbing the ankle of the archer and tugging slightly. After getting her attention, Asoka locked eyes with the younger woman and then shook her head. Blood trailed from her mouth and rolled down her chin, dripping into the soil.
"Don't do it. Don't touch the wall. I'm gonna throw you over it. You can still get away."
The as yet unidentified assassin became intrigued by the determination that the kunoichi showed. Bringing up another hand, he brushed it against his chin in thought of ways that he could use Asoka's brain for his tampering, which was clearly quite intelligent.
"Intriguing indeed. Even for someone who has only reached intermediate shinobi status, this one is promising."
"Ignore him," she whispered, her voice falling soft and raspy. "We only have one shot at getting you over."
Hidden Star Village? The name sounded familiar, but Ninoya couldn't remember where it was located. She more focused on other matters, though. Like the incredibly dangerous walls moving right before her.
"You're a monster," she said. "I hope you know that."
Incineration was an idiotic way to die. She wanted to go out swinging, at least. The idea of going out in a fantastic explosion was appealing, but it wasn't feasible now. She also didn't want to keep her body in tact for this freak, so just charging at him wouldn't work. A few explosion tags remained in her holster, perhaps she could...
Her expression turned to fear as she felt something tug at her leg. Had the man already trapped her in place? "W-witch!" No idea what her actual name was, Ninoya went for the first thing that popped into her head. She was still alive? A stab in the chest and falling a hundred meters, face first, didn't do her in.
Slapping together hand signs, Raiton chakra build up in her left hand, slowly making its way up to a couple of her fingers. No way her other hand was getting any more abuse. It was hard enough to muster up the chakra for another Straight Shot.
"I don't want to leave you. I can't." She clenched her teeth, looking down at her fallen friend. "You have to be able to do something. Anything! Please... we can get out of this together." It didn't seem like there was much hope, though.
Ninoya pointed her left index and middle fingers at the monster, as if she was holding a gun. A sparking, shaky gun. Her left hand wasn't her "aiming" hand, and already drained of most of her chakra, this last technique was really going to take its toll. Though it was ready to fire at any time.
"Stay back." Ninoya didn't ignore the man. "Stay back! You are not going to lay another finger on her!" Perhaps she was being foolish again, but she was determined to stay by Asoka's side until something ripped them apart. Be it Asoka tossing her over the wall or the man's bloody weapon.
A dragon was a welcome situation over this.
The Star Village assassin readied his weapon and started charging. Asoka gritted her teeth and glared daggers at the man.
Oh, wait... A sudden realization struck about a recent gesture. That'll do, but focus now.
"I have waited long enough. Are you prepared to die?!"
The injured kunoichi pushed herself into position, swinging her body on the ground level. The merciless man brought the large blade to prominence, aiming to skewer the archer before she could draw upon her lightning. Asoka maneuvered her leg to tap behind Ninoya's knees, causing them to buckle and lowering her. She placed one hand on the girl's head and another around her wrist to pull her further down.
"Discharge your jutsu and save it," she whispered.
With this sudden maneuver, the man narrowly missed his target, instead skewering his own wall. It ruptured into his face.
"Ah! F.uck! What the hell did you do?!"
Asoka stumbled to her feet, guiding Ninoya along until they were away from their assailant. She freed the younger woman from her grasp and nimbly reached into her waist holder, fishing out the vial of healing ointment Asoka had given the persistent fool just moments prior to their encounter. Uncorking the top with her teeth, she jabbed the open vial into her wound. The gelatinous mixture seeped down and brought immediate relief, acting as a coagulant to stop her bleeding and helping to mend the lacerated cells.
"Man am I glad you decided not to use it. This is the only thing keeping me alive."
She felt woozy, but she survived. Digging into her own medical pouch yielded a blood capsule, which was promptly gulped down.
--
Feeling momentary defeat, the man about-faced his weapon and left it there, giving a slow clap for their valiant efforts.
"Bravo, Asoka of the Swift Warning."
She said nothing at first, just maintained her stare.
"But then, your reputation always pegged you as an agile little cunt. It draws you a nice figure in our Bingo Book."
"Sorry to disappoint ya, but I don't plan on letting you cash in on it!"
"And I apologize too, because I'm not giving you a choice."
Her eyes flared with Wind Release chakra. She was planning to blow him into his wall—with a little help from Ninoya.
"He considers you a pest, so play to his psychology and make yourself one. Open up a distraction."
With a hole in her chest the witch was still faster than the monster, despite his "powerful kinjutsu". If the situation wasn't so serious Ninoya may have found it funny.
"It's not that simple for me. I can try to discharge it, though." Saving on chakra was crucial now. Ninoya needed all the strength she could muster.
Letting her left arm hang freely, Ninoya stood by Asoka's side. Raiton chakra slowly drained from Ninoya's fingers and into her hand. It was all built up so tightly, being able to completely disperse it back into her system was a challenge. The sparks had stopped jumping all about her hand, though.
Asoka? Bingo book? Was she some sort of criminal? She had been lecturing Ninoya earlier, what exactly had Asoka done to give her that kind of reputation? Ninoya almost didn't want to ask.
"Okay." She could play a good distraction. It would teach this idiot to think of Ninoya as just some pest. She hated when people thought lowly of her.
Moving away from Asoka, Ninoya pulled out a kunai from her waist pouch, twirling the end ring of it around her right finger. "Are you forgetting about me?" Her left hand, still filled with lightning chakra, was beginning to ache. Discharging the buildup wasn't going to work at this point. "I'm still alive, you know!" She taunted. "When I'm through with you there'll be a reason for the Hidden Star to have me in their silly little Bingo Book!" The best part about Ninoya's "acting" was that she was partially serious. She felt as if she could take this guy on, even if it was empty confidence. Though she did have an ace up her sleeve.
The kunai stopped twirling and she moved her arm up back to throw it at the man. However, she didn't, instead Ninoya bent her left wrist and pointed her right and middle fingers at the man. Raiton chakra still available in her hand, Ninoya released a semi-concentrated strike of lightning. It wasn't completely focused so it wasn't a proper Straight Shot, but rather several branches of electricity. Either way, it was bound to hurt if it managed to hit the monster.
Asoka got her distraction. Hopefully it was enough.
The man laughed. He liked to laugh a lot. "You're going to use a dinky little kunai knife to hit me?"
He prepared himself to deflect the simple projectile, but little did he know Ninoya had something else in mind, opting to send her other hand forth and shoot lines of electricity toward him. "Ah! Looks like I underestimated you." He quickly jumped to the side.
Okay, just a little more.
Asoka grabbed another kunai and threw it at the man. He also detected that and jumped farther away.
"Don't you get it? You're not going to hit me with your pittling little offenses."
Asoka weaved handseals and blurred in front of the assassin. Her body was turned to the side, head facing the foe and her outstretched palm hooked underneath her opposing arm and pointed at its target. She kicked, but the man blocked her foot. Applying more force into the strike managed to push him back a little more. The man swung his weapon, but Asoka dipped out of the way, punching hard in retaliation.
Again the man avoided it. Good.
Now close to the surface of his wall, his eyes narrowed. "I see what you're trying to do. Using your strength to overpower me in the hopes that you're going to push me into my own wall. That's clever! That is definitely clever, but it's not going to work."
Asoka grinned. "Something like that. Wind Release: Great Palm Gale!"
"Wait..." His eyes widened at the realization. "What?! You little bitch!"
Wind violently exploded from her palm and encumbered the man. He searched his surroundings desperately, looking for something–anything solid–that he could use to replace his body with. In closing off the three from their surroundings in the formation of the wall, he hadn't anticipated actually losing the fight and ended up limiting his options in the process. Smacked against the wind, his body flew.
Time slowed down.
Asoka rushed over to Ninoya, bringing an arm around her shoulders and pulling her down to the ground.
As the body of the assassin smacked against the wall surface, a vociferous and earsplitting bang flooded their ears, causing them to start ringing. His body was annihilated in an instant, consumed by the explosive phasing property of the jutsu, as well as his own chakra. The only thing that remained of the man was his weapon sticking from the wall next to his burial ground. The walls shattered, wisps of sparkling energy in the shape of stars surrounding everything in the immediate area, flitting upwards until fading from existence.
Asoka took a deep breath out in the aftermath of it all, giggling after a bit of a pause.
"So now I'm your 'friend,' huh?"
Didn't hit. Damn it. Although the lightning missed, it proved to be effective for keeping the man's attention away from Asoka.
"Be careful...!" Ninoya's hands were stinging and she was exhausted. All she could do was stand by as Asoka rushed into battle with the man. Ninoya would have just been a burden.
Hitting the ground, Ninoya closed her eyes tight as flames overcame the man. For a moment it felt incredibly hot, Ninoya wondered if she had accidentally touched the wall. The worry left as the walls cracked and finally shattered. The archer brought her head up in time to see the strange, albeit cool, display of the walls around them as they were destroyed.
Ninoya's eyes stared at what was left from their encounter: the sword that protruded from the ground. She thought about how many people the Hidden Star shinobi killed with that weapon.
"Don't push it." Ninoya smirked, getting up from the snow. To be honest, Ninoya had a serious lack of friends. Go figure, huh? "My name is Ninoya, if you're curious." She had to give her something. Ninoya knew Asoka's name, so it was only right.
Hand gently grasping the handle of the dead monster's blade, Ninoya removed it from the ground. It was strange, the blade felt almost purified with its owner defeated. Maybe it was just because the wet snow had cleaned off any remaining blood or dirt and now the sun was glistening off of the dripping blade-- but spiritually the weapon felt free. Whether the sword had any special properties or not was another story.
"I'm keeping it." Stated Ninoya, as if Asoka had no say in the matter. "He mentioned he was from the Hidden Star Village. This sword may hold some sort of secret or mean something to the village." She turned her head to the witch. "Maybe it didn't mean much to me before, but I am a part of the Guardian section of White Ops, and I feel it is my duty to investigate. If there are high ranking shinobi coming from that village to grab test subjects from my home, I have to do something about it." Asoka could have been killed. Hell, for a few seconds maybe she was. It was one of the scariest situations Ninoya had been in. Maybe she was crazy to go to confront the village and potentially face the same sort of evil again. Or maybe she was brave. Either way, this was sort of personal to Ninoya now.
She wobbled for a moment before managing to find her balance. "Obviously not now, of course." The archer looked around for a sheath of some sort, but it was likely it had been destroyed along with the Star shinobi. Ninoya pulled a scroll from her inner cloak and unfurled it, altering the seal slightly so the parchment could contain the sword through some basic fuuinjutsu. The duo finally had a moment to breath.
And so, in the aftermath of sparring each other, escaping pursuit from a dragon and taking down a skilled assassin, the duo took a breather and prepared their things to head back to Yukigakure grounds. Asoka hoped Ninoya had learned something from all of this, because she certainly had: never drop your guard like an idiot in a crucial situation. With a peculiar weapon in her grasp from the mysterious Hidden Star shinobi, what might the White Ops archer discover about their enemies? It was a story for another time.
As for now, rest came for the wearied–and deservedly so.
