Akai: Break (solo, DNP)

The many towns and cities tucked in the crevices of the world, uncontrolled by any formal power. Some are friendly. Others, not so much.

Akai: Break (solo, DNP)

Akai stared at the ground, nervously walking through the street of a town.

Had she gotten strong enough to not disappoint Ryuhou-sensei? Could she keep her mistakes a secret?

An apple rolled up to her foot. And another, and another....

Akai picked the first one up in confusion.

"Oh! Sorry, sorry deary. You wouldn't mind helping me pick those up, would you? The bag broke...."

The girl looked up to see an old woman before she nodded shyly, picking up the escaped apples, darting around passersby who were too self-absorbed to bother stopping... and then she had her arms full of apples, and emerald eyes looked to the obaa-san, hesitating for a moment.

"...I could help you carry these, ma'am."

The woman hesitated for just a moment as well, brow furrowing as if uncertain whether or not she should accept the help before she shrugged and smiled.

"Yes, yes, that would be lovely. Right this way, child."

Akai nodded and followed the obaa-san through twisting streets until they came to a small house on the outskirts, heading inside. The girl was setting the apples on the kitchen counter when everything went black.

"She'll be having her first blood in a couple of weeks. Should fetch a nice price with the right bidder."

"I don' get what they see in brats like this. Give her a few more years, I'd be all over her, though."

"Doesn't matter what you think, just matters what kind of price she fetches. She might go to some rich family, too, you know."

"Oi! What's taking you assholes so long?! Just put the bitch in her [badword] cage and get it over with, we've got a line here!"

"Calm down, we're sending her out now."

Akai groaned, curling in on herself and clutching her aching head.

The clinking of metal on metal and the cold floor made her crack open an eye, only to find herself staring through steel bars. Akai shivered, hugging herself, and found her equipment and normal clothes gone, leaving her in a simple shift.

She held out a hand, palm facing upwards, and focused: a mere spark of flame formed, fizzled out, and the effort sent shockwaves of pain and exhaustion through her body, crumpling into darkness yet again.

The next time she awoke, she carefully sat up and looked down at her chest, the epicenter of the pain from before, to find a seal neatly placed in the dip between her still-undeveloped breasts.

A spark of anger flickered in her gaze before she pushed at the door of the cage, testing it and finding no give. Green eyes darted around her surroundings, taking stock as best as she could of her location and possible tools of escape.

A small room of large cages, the floors covered in straw like her own. A simple, high, small window provided light and a way to track the passage of time.

And... other women and girls, two adults, two teenagers, and one closer to her age.

The eldest, a brunette with somber brown eyes, was watching her, the others too absorbed in their own thoughts or misery to have noticed the new addition. The youngest was softly crying, the other adult softly trying to soothe her.

The stench was of rotting fecal matter and stale urine.

"What is this place?"

"The beginning of your new life as a slave, girl. I don't know if your parents sold you or you were kidnapped or what, but you're stuck here now, just like the rest of us.... All you can do is hope for a good owner."

Akai's jaw set stubbornly and she set her focus on finding something--anything--to pick or break the lock with, and failing that set about studying the cage itself, looking for potential weak points.

Nothing.

And without her ninjutsu to help her, or a weapon... she was trapped.

Days passed, and she learned more about her captors by listening to the men who came by to check on their "livestock".

An extension of the same "colored suits" gang she had tried to help Ayatsuri-san fight against. He'd warned her, after all... if she meddled in their affairs, they would probably come after her. And yet this could also all be just a coincidence.

Neither option boded well.

But today... today would be the day she escaped.

As the Auctioneer dawned his mask, a simple black piece of the eyes with a crimson feather that curled forward, he smiled in anticipation of his stage. He was well-dressed, as always when these things happened, a black suit and equally black dress shoes, her undershirt as crimson as his mask's feather.

A knocking at the door? It wasn't time yet.

"Come in!"

"Sir, one of 'em tried to escape, bloodied up a few of our men 'fore we bloodied her."

The Auctioneer sighed, taking off his suit jacket and his black gloves, only to put on white gloves stained with old blood. "Yes, yes, I'll see to making sure our merchandise is in pristine condition."

"A-an' our men?"

"Why, it's their fault for letting their guards down, now isn't it?"

Cold water shocked her awake, and she coughed and spluttered as a hand held her wrist with a firm gentleness. Confused green eyes looked up to find a blonde young man with cold blue eyes in a crimson shirt with its sleeves rolled up and black dress-pants, his face partially obscured by a black mask with a feather red as flame, his hands glowing green with medical chakra as he attended to her injuries.

"Who are you?"

Blue eyes ignored her as they focused on her injuries, healing each one and washing the blood away with warm water and an old rag.

As he shifted to the gash in her side, green eyes grew wary, but he took no note of the simple white undergarments she had been ordered to change into, not even reacting to the seal on her belly that was probably what restricted her chakra.

...the gentleness was just careful handling of merchandise, wasn't it?

No one here recognized her as a human being... just as another piece of merchandise.

As he healed a cut on her cheek, he saw her eyes dull.

...he was a salesman, right? An Auctioneer preparing to move onto his stage.

She was just another girl to sell into slavery.

The last bruise healed, the last of the blood washed away, and he carelessly tossed a towel to the girl before pointing at a simple white dress on a nearby table.

"Put that on, and don't try to run again," he said nonchalantly, his back to her as he walked away, even as he frowned slightly.

On his stage, they were just other actors.

But behind the scenes... what were they, really?

The others were looking at him, and he put on a salesman's smile as he pulled off the damp, bloodstained gloves, returning to his dressing room and putting his jacket and black gloves back on.

Soon he was on the stage, under the only lights in the dark auditorium, gazing out into the sea of masks.

The familiar excitement wiped his doubts away, and his salesman's smile grew.

"Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to our little masquerade. Let the sales begin!"

"As of today, you are to begin working as my personal aid. You have shinobi training, correct?"

The young girl nodded curtly, silent and noticeably not wanting to be here, emerald eyes glaring up at him. She had bathed, as ordered, and was now garbed in the uniform he deemed appropriate for her position: skin-tight black pants, a long-sleeved, close-fitting black shirt and a black dress-vest overtop with his family crest embroidered over the heart in golden trim: a lion bearing a sword in its mouth, fingerless black gloves, and black military boots.

"You will report to our blademaster so that he may survey your skills and give you further training if needed; after that, he will send you to one of the domestic servants for a tour of the grounds. You'll receive further orders after that. Understood?"

"I have a sensei, and he isn't your blademaster."

Calm, in control of herself, but there was deep fire in her eyes.... She would make for a fine addition. He had been right to buy her, even with her young age.

"You will find that more than one teacher will give you more breadth. Come now." He turned, beginning to walk down the hall, before pausing. "What is your name?"

"...Akai. Yachou Akai."

"'Wild Bird'... very well. Your new name here will be Taka."

Without her polearm and suddenly fighting with an odd sword that was so skinny and flexible it was no good for slicing, Akai was having a rough time against her "master"'s blademaster, to the point that she had welts all over and had repeatedly had the tip of her opponent's springy blade lightly poking her throat.

The new clothing was far more comfortable than the white dress or the dirtied shift, and she could move well in it, but the lion was just another mark that wasn't hers, and the boots were new and stiff and hurt her feet.

And a new name....

Her name was Akai, given for her crimson locks by the Orphanage and Shiro-ojiisan. Her surname was Yachou, picked by herself, meaning wild bird.

Sure, a falcon was another kind of bird, but she didn't want to be called Taka!

FWAP

"Again."

Her eyes watered from her stinging cheek as she glared at the ojii-san facing her: a craggy face, well-kept grey beard, bald head, severe, bright green eyes, a body with the build of a balanced swordsman.

Over the course of their spars, she had already obtained a grudging respect for the Blademaster; how could she not, with how many times she'd been beaten?

And behind the Blademaster, standing atop one of the balconies that looked over the courtyard was the man who had bought her. Long blonde hair gathered into a low ponytail, dark brown eyes, garbed in a long purple western military coat with gold, white, and black trim, a lavender vest and white undershirt beneath, a button with the same golden lion and sword fastening the undershirt at his throat. White pants went down into black military boots, and a belt held a sheathed, slender one-handed sword at his side. A dark purple half-cape over his left shoulder and a black hat with a gray plume completed his appearance, while his body looked well-built and ready for combat.

Emerald eyes glanced up at him as he watched her and abruptly her gaze cooled as it slid back to the Blademaster.

Remember everything you've learned so far.

This springy sword was one-handed, which allowed her left hand to remain free.

When the ojii-san moved, there was a slight limp in his step, though his movements were still dance-like.

Focus.

One step, two, a pivoting dodge around a stab and she descended into a sweeping kick against his weak leg, knocking the ojii-san off-balance before using her momentum to regain her feet and lunge with her weapon in a stab; a quick parry saved him an injury to the shoulder, but she followed it up with a swift elbow to the sternum, and the Blademaster staggered back, gasping. When he recovered, the tip of her weapon was against his throat.

He grinned.

"Not bad, girly."

Above, the blonde "master" turned away, disappearing into his mansion.
