History//Legend of the Clan:
A clan known for their stealth and secret techniques, the Kawakami came about as the result of a single man's obsession with legend.
One of many ancient tales from the time before modern ninjutsu, the legend of the Enenra was a rare one indeed, forgotten by all but the most dedicated historians. This Enenra was a demon said to resides in fires and, when it emerged it would occasionally take the form of a human. It is said that an Enenra can only be seen in this form by the pure of heart, normally the very young or the very old, and to all others it will simply appear as a monster of smoke and fire.
Having seen one as a child, a young Jinichi Kawakami saw first hand the power a demon could posses. The demon burned through bone and flesh of a group of bandits attacking his family, moving in a cloud of smoke and leaving nothing but death and destruction behind. They boy was fascinated and tried to learn as much as he could about Enenra's and other demons, spending his life cataloging ancient legends and becoming what many called a spiritual channeler.
Still, he lived a normal life, fell in love, and had children, and later in his life grandchildren. One day, he brought his young grandson out with him on a camping trip, and due to an accident the forest caught fire and the pair was caught in the blaze. As the fire surrounded them and closed in, his grandson became pinned under a burning tree and as he himself caught fire, the grandson began screaming about a boy playing in the flames. Jinichi knew what his grandson was seeing and pleaded with the demon to save them, and though he could not see it, when the flames started dying down he knew the demon had complied. Still, though the demon extinguished many of the flames, the boy had seemingly died. In his sorrow and desperation, Jinichi attempted a forbidden technique, one that would bind the boy's soul back into his body. The process nearly killed Jinichi, but as the flames finally died down, his grandson was coughing and breathing, alive, and for the most part well. Still the event was not without its consequences, as the boy had lost his memories, and his eyes had taken on a smokey grey color.
When they returned, the grandfather kept the secret of what happened as much as he could, but as the boy grew it became harder and harder to explain. He began developing powers that at first were raw and dangerous, but as he grew he began to learn to control them, passing them off as simple parlor tricks to those who asked too many questions. Jinichi observed the boy for as long as he could, taking notes and eventually writing everything he knew about the situation down. Before he died, he gave the book to the boy's father for safekeeping. For a while the boy's father tried to keep it a secret as well, but when bandits attacked the town and the boy was forced to defend himself, the true nature of his abilities was revealed to everyone. Instead of fearing him though, the villagers worshiped him for saving them.
As the father got older, he revealed to the boy what the boys grandfather had done, and though shocked, the boy was appreciative. Seeing the potential in it, he secretly trained children in the ninja arts, and when they were ready he performed the process, which he dubbed "the ritual". Though it took a few tries to perfect, eventually he did, and as time went on, he passed the secret down to those he had turned, creating the clan and passing his own name to all those that completed the ritual..
Kekkei Genkai//Bloodline of the Clan:
Kemuton| Smoke release (Wind + Fire)
Members of the Kawakami clan who undergo "The Ritual" are granted the advanced element of smoke, composed of partly wind and partly fire chakra. They are able to produce smoke form their mouths and bodies, manipulate its density and temperature, and use it in the same fashion that one would use any other element, advanced or not. The smoke that they produce is raw and unrefined, but with training they can control nearby smoke, such as from cigarettes or fires, by extending their chakra into it and manipulating it. Weak against many elements, it is a difficult element to master, but in the hands of a Kawakami it can be especially deadly.
- Clan Training :: All clan members who chose to do so are trained as shinobi, and the best of the best are picked to undergo "The Ritual". The process erases much of their memories, but grants them the power of the clan. From that point they are retaught (at an accelerated rate) and renamed, normally retaining their original surname and adopting the family name Kawakami. They are then trained in the secret clan arts, and are taught the rituals that created them.
- Population :: A relatively new clan, the Kawakami are very small, with less than 25 members able to use the bloodline, and slightly more in the family through relation or marriage and such. While most come from different backgrounds, many share the trait of dark hair, and all ritualized members have smoky grey eyes, a sign that they have completed the process. Most also have significant burns on their bodies, though it is not something that they openly talk about.
- Nature//Values :: Secretive, neutral, the Kawakami make the majority of their income from shinobi related profits, though they all tend to have other hobbies as well, which they may explore after retirement. They take the secrecy of their abilities very seriously, and will actively hunt down and eliminate any traitorous clan members, and members have the concept that it is better to die than be captured drilled into their heads.
