Sea Breeze and Ghoulies

The many towns and cities tucked in the crevices of the world, uncontrolled by any formal power. Some are friendly. Others, not so much.

Sea Breeze and Ghoulies

The smell was so familiar, it was just like she was home. That little bit of wet salt in the air, the light smell of the sea, it all just kept hitting her in her homesick nerves. Even though she had made only a portion of the journey to her new home, and even with that the climate, the air, everything was technically the same, the further away she got from old kiri island, the more it reminded her of home. She had heard where they were going was warm, but it seemed to be the same chill breezes everywhere. What was this, stop two, stop three? She couldn't remember. she could barely remember the name of the ship she was on, was it still the S.S. hydra, or was it something else.

Who cares

Her eyes scanned the crowds, looking for familiar faces during her layover. where were the girls she had met on the ship, the bratty uppity one and the naked one? Did they get lost? Did she care? Her stomach reminded her that she didn't. The food on the boat sucked, fish every day, some stale ass bread, and what she could only imagine was watered down beer to drink. She probably shouldn't even have been drinking it, but then again, it was that or nothing. She was thankful that she was finally off the boat and could get some real food, even if only for an hour or two.

"Well... where should I go...."

The smell was substantial. No matter what she tried to use to cover her mouth and nose, the thick iodine and salt mixture always found its own way into her system, and made her gag when she took a deep enough breathe. The impact of that first breathe she took nearly knocked her off her feet, and she still felt light headed around it. Once she was in a bar, though, hopefully the scent would be ignored in favor of the ever effervescent liquor and beer found within.

Running a hand through her hair, holding her breathe, the short-black hair rested easily on her shoulders, only waving at the slight breeze, which she turned her head to avoid, vivid blue hidden behind her eyelids. The area wasn't particularly cold, enabling her to survive in a modified Gi with two belts, one black and one red with a floral pattern on it. Her entire outfit was decided by three colors: white, black and red. Bowing her head down to the ground, she covered her mouth while exhaling and held her nose while inhaling, hoping to further her time without smelling the ever-strong saltwater nearby.

Leaning against a building, her eyes opened widely when she heard the familiar ringing of a coin purse and focused on it, following the sound to the inside, which happened to be a bar; lucky her! Breathing at last, she could still ever faintly smell the saltwater, but was more able to focus on the alcohol now. Sitting at the bar, she asked for just a glass of water at first, but also purchased a bowl of peanuts, so as not to piss off the bartender, and thought about where to go from here.

A little while later, she paid for her peanuts and left, the scent no longer making her gag but still obnoxious and causing a light headache, which she was okay with in comparison to the gagging. Soon a ship pulled in, so Yoko Rin inspected each person to walk off of it, standing right next to them all as if waiting for someone, identifying who would be the best to pickpocket some quick money off of.

She wandered around, eyeing each and every restaurant door, looking for anywhere that sounded appetizing. Of course, she was really only looking for something simple and cheap, some grilled fish and rice maybe, but she didn't want to be around too many people, which made her search all the more difficult. she wasn't sure why, but there were a ton of people everywhere she went, on every strreet, at every door, everywhere. Everywhere except for a small restaurant in the corner of the street she was on.

It was facing the water, a prime location, but people seemed to be staying away from it. Was the food bad? Were they even open? She asked herself all the questions she could as she approached, but as she saw the open sign, she decided to just find out for herself. Stepping in, the smell of the food was incredible, and the menu board looked pretty reasonable, and everything looked normal, so she shrugged, waited for a seat, and sat at a small booth by herself. The dim lights made it a little hard to see the details, but the restaurant looked decent, wood floors, wood tables, comfortable white cushions on all the seats, dividers between the booths. Everything seemed okay.

"So, what can I get you to drink?"

Kyomi was startled by the appearance of a young girl, probably a year or to her junior. The girl had came out of nowhere, silent as a mouse, and even though Kyomi claimed to be a shinobi, she hadn't noticed the girls approach at all. The girls dark pupils and har, and pale skin reminded Kyomi of a ghost, but she laughed a little at the thought of it. Smiling, she ordered a tea, and sat patiently, reading over the menu taht was folded at the end of the table. Of course they had what she wanted, grilled fish and rice, but they had quite a few kind, and se read the menu four or five times before she thought she knew what she wanted.

"I'd recommend the Ayu or the Saba"

Kyomi jumped again, the girl standing at the end of the table holding a hot kettle of tea and a glass. Again, she had just appeared, catching kyomi off guard. As the girl placed her tea down, she pointed on the menu to the two dished, letting her finger linger over the saba for just a second longer. Taking this as a sign, kyomi ordered that, and the girl took her menu and walked off.

Kyomi poured her tea, which was steaming, and went to sip it, but the first sip she took was so weird. She could see the steam rolling off the tea, but it felt room temperature. Frowning, she took another sip and yet again it didn't feel as hot as it looked.

Weird

No one who stepped off the ship seemed like they had a particularly good amount of money to make it worth taking anything off of them, but the girl who looked just a bit younger than Rin looked like she had something worth taking. Following her carefully, the two made their way through the buildings, inspecting each until there was one that looked interesting- apparently the other girl wanted to eat, which was fine considering Rin herself was a bit hungry- those peanuts didn't satisfy her appetite- and eating could take her mind off that nauseous iodine and salt mixture in the air.

Following the other girl into the restaurant, Rin sat herself somewhere where she could keep an eye on the other girl, and closed her eyes for a moment to cherish the fact that she couldn't smell the saltwater. Opening them again, there was yet another female who seemed even younger than the other girl she was following, who seemed to be a waitress. Smiling, Rin accepted the menu and looked it over, ordering a cup of ice water and plain rice, just wanting to fill her stomach for now. The water was given quickly, but despite the ice cubes in it it didn't particularly taste too cold. Shrugging it off, Rin kept a close eye on the other girl while she waited for her rice.

Slowly, a few other people came into the restaurant. First, a girl somewhere near Kyomi's age, then a man dressed rather modestly, a worker perhaps. His walked seemed tired, adding basis to her assumption of his job. He sat at the bar on the far side of the restaurant, looking out at the water, while the girl sat elsewhere. Kyomi's eyes wandered to the decorations, there were pictures on all of the walls, of people and places she had never heard of or seen before, all rather old looking but fresh, like newly printed vintage photos. There was one in particular that kept catching her eye though, one of a family standing on a pier. There was a mother, a father, a young boy, and an infant, the older three all having large smiles on their faces. It was nice.

A few minutes later, she watched as the waitress came out to speak to the girl, and then come back and give her a drink. After that the smell of food drifted to her nose as the girl appeared with a tray of grilled fish and a decent sized bowl of rice. Finally, she walked over to the man, removing her apron first before giving him a large hug and sitting beside him.

Cute.

The food tasted okay, but it wasn't particularly warm like she'd hoped it would be. Thoughts ran through her mind as she ate it, finding herself deep in thought after not too long. Her lifestyle was... problematic. It wasn't long before someone caught on that she was a thief, and if they did she couldn't defend herself for long. Just because she carried her brother's sword didn't mean she knew how to use it. The shadows were her ally, but she merely adopted them, and they could betray her without warning. Her entire life ran through her mind, from her adoption to her brother's disappearance.

Eyes glossed over, someone watching her would have noticed that she wasn't moving for a good three or four minutes, until finally she realized where she was and looked around. Her, ah, target was sitting and enjoying her food, while their waitress was within a gentlemen's company and enjoying herself. The two seemed cute, so Rin went back to her food and ate it, trying not to think about her past.

Yesterday is gone.

She ate her food, and yet again, it just didn't seem right. It smelled good, looked good, but the taste and feel, they were just off. After a few bites, she pushed it away and began people watching in disappointment. A few other people walked in, a young woman and her friend, and an old couple. Everyone sat, and eventually the girl went back to her duties, serving them all as the man waited patiently. Still, she didn't come back to her table, and Kyomi almost moved to get her attention, but was interrupted by a man abruptly bursting through the door.

His face looked ragged and worn, his eyes were red, a s though he had been either smoking or crying, and his voice shook as he asked for a girl named 'Kimiko'. Nobody answered him, everyone just stared, that was until the man at the bar finally turned around, staring him in his eyes.

"It doesn't matter. Wherever she is, she doesn't want anything to do with you any more."

The man rushed the other, slamming him into the bar before being flipped by the more defensive man. A short brawl ensued before the waitress, rushed out, screaming for them to stop. The distraught man addressed her by name, but she did not give him the same courtesy.

"You hurt me... You hurt me so deeply, I can't forgive you and I never will, get out of here...."

The man began to tear, he began to try and form words, but the glare from both Kimiko and the unnamed man from the bar sent him walking away in shame. Just as he left though he turned around. Something was wrong, his eyes were no longer sad, they were cold.
