Life Goes On (Hanya)

[ \Sakura Hiroba | Kamiza | Yomi/ ]
The capital city of Raikou no Kuni, nestled between mountain peaks in the center of the country. Its altitude and location lead to common snowfall, though it is not necessarily cold throughout the year, clear days often leading to be as warm as summer. At the southern end of this star-shaped city lies a great stone bridge spanning a large lake, connecting to the road back down to the rest of the world. The home of both the Daimyo and Kamiza, the Onigami Compounds.

As Sakura went to retrieve his own weapon, so did Keiichi. While most samuraai preferred the katana, and this the bokken for training, Keiichi had found a weapon more suited to his rather flashy tastes and dislike of blood. If he was resolute enough to pull his weapon, if it ever came down to that, he would not cut them down.

He would crush them with overwhelming force.

In his room he had a weapon that was not quite katana, and not quite cleaver sword, but something in between, normally refered to as an oversized nodachi. About thrice the width and one an a half times the length, it was a heavy weapon, and its wooden counterpart was the same. Feeling the cloth wrapped grip in his hands once again, he smiled, not remembering when last he had picked it up. On exiting his room he felt a small tap at his shoulder, looking to see his companion Yuke perched on his shoulder. the small mischevious monkey hadn't been feeling well as of recently, but sensing the show ahead he grabbed on to Keiichi's clothing and was coming along for the ride.

"Oy oy oy, i'm here....."

His brother was already waiting at the courtyard, the stone ground free of snow as the sun heated it much quicker than the grass around it. that made it a tad slick, but nothing that his sure footed style wouldn't be able to handle. Placing his weapon tip down into the ground, he bowed to his brother before taking a two handed grip of it, holding it infront of him. Then they began.

He would wait for his brothers first move, judging whether their previous bouts had made him cautious to attack, or whether he had become confident enough in his skills to try and control the pace of the battle. Keiichi could have taken either approach, but this was not a contest to prove a winner for him, it was simply to release tension and feel the thoughts behind his movements.

Keiichi-nii wasn't going to make the first move.

Amethyst eyes were locked onto brown, both hands firmly grasping the bokken's handle, right hand closest to the guard, the point held still....

His right foot shifted forward before he moved, darting around to his brother's left and aiming a strike at his wrists, fluidly turning so that his back faced Keiichi-nii for a moment before aiming a second strike at his older brother's back; Sakura's style was focused more on speed than strength, and his footwork was careful atop the slick stones....

It was as good a start as any.

Indeed it was a good start, Sakura's speed much improving since last they dueled. Keiichi barely had time to block the strike to his wrists before he was stumped as his brothers body was not fully behind it. Instead, his body was spinning, aiming to attack from his blind, a decent tactic if not expected. Keiichi countered by pulling his sword up and over his shoulder, feeling the blade hit the ground and then blocking his brothers attack. From that point he raised his sword back over, feeling the vibration of the bokken sliding down the length of his blade. A quick push of the hilt and a turn of the hips brought his sword full circle, allowing him to begin the rotation for a large downward swing.

"Very nice Sakura."

Keiichi-nii had more reach and power, but he was slower. If he was disarmed, Sakura could win; if he was caught in what would be considered a deadly blow had they been using real blades, Sakura could win.

And if Keiichi-nii landed a blow on him, it would hurt quite a bit.

Sakura shuffled back to avoid the wind-up swing, waiting until the wooden nodachi was coming in its downward swing before darting in the direction the wind-up swing had come from, shifting his grip on his bokken and holding it horizontally so that it slid up the back of the nodachi as Sakura darted past, aiming for his brother's throat; if his brother blocked, he would transition into another attempted strike to Keiichi-nii's back, but if his brother failed to block, the bokken would shift just enough to graze the side of Keiichi-nii's neck and he would bring distance between them before returning to his starting pose.

Sakura was definitley different, judging Keiichi's attack before rushing in blindly, something he had learned the hard way through trial and error. Still, he was confident in his abilities and strategies, and relying on the fact that every swing, every movement of keichi's, that they were slow and deliberate. He had forgotten the most important thing in samurai combat.

Minding one's maai.

Switching his grip quickly, Kei simultaneously dropped his body and pushed his sword upwards, allowing his brotheers strike to gide along the elevated path it was following while avoiding the attack altogether. The lack of resistance of a body or a block would probably throw off his brothers footing, or cause him to overshoot where it was that he wanted to stop, but Keiichi was already moving to readjust his sword, allowing it to rest on his back breifly as he turned to face his brother.

Holding the handle with one hand and resting the other on the flat of the blade he began to twist his body untill the point of his own sword was directly behind him, his upper body perpendicular to his legs. The amount of torque he was producing was evident just by how his body was coiled, but the odd smile on his face told that this stance was only the beginning.

"Kirikirimai!"

And just like that he released the restraint that was holding his body in, causing him to spin, and releasing the hand that was holding the flat of his blade caused it to extend out, creating a wide arc of pure destructive power aimed straight at the recovering Sakura.

Amethyst eyes widened as the lack of resistance off-put his balance, sending him stumbling.

"Kirikirimai."

Oh shi--

A lucky slip on the slick stones caused his brother's sword to just barely miss Sakura as he fell, quickly rolling away to the side to get distance between them, rising in his newly dampened kimono as he raised his katana and took it in a two-handed grip again, carefully keeping his distance as he circled around, determined to avoid getting caught against a wall.

Keiichi-nii was in control of the battle's flow right now.... How could he get it into his own favor?

The large swing was an incredible offensive and defensive maenuver, prodicing great power aand forcing an opponent out of the range of their own attacks in an effort to avoid it, but it was not without its drawbacks. the speed of the swing blurred his vision, causing him to lose his opponent until he slowed down, and the momentum was raw and uncontrolled, allowing anyone able to avoid the initial attack an opportunity to get on the inside and attack before he could regain his footing. The moment he didn't feel his brothers weapon or body strke his own though, he did what he had been taught in this very situation.

Regain, Readjust, Resume.

A single cross step moved his body in front of the momentum of his own sword, giving him a brief second to locate his brother scrambling to his feet before the blade meet up with his body. Pulling back and resting on his heels with bent legs, he allowed the blade to take control and use him as a bearing, speeding up the next rotation while also readjusting its height. This time he would aim low, near the ground, aiming to catch his brother at the legs while he was still regaining his footing. His only reasonable option would be to jump to avoid the attack, which would be met with another spinning blow at just about neck level. Now because this was his brother, and because though his sword was wooden it was still quite heavy, he would drop down just a bit more, aiming the blow at the shoulders instead, and praying his brother didn't try and duck.

Sakura jumped up and forward to avoid the second swing, mind clearing of thought.

Amethyst eyes saw the third's approach, and he shifted his sword to a one-handed grip, his free hand reaching out, pushing up and over in a roll with the momentum.

A landing in a crouch, a sudden spin, bokken, still held one-handed, lashing out much like his older brother's in an aim for the backs of Keiichi-nii's knees as the momentum of his much heavier swing carried him, aiming to knock Keiichi-nii to the ground.

His triplet of swings had missed, and now he was slowly spinning down, but he could see his brother taking the opportunity, seeing the flaw in his attack and going for it. This was the correct time to do it, and if it wasn't for Keiichi knowing his own weakness so thoroughly, he might have been caught off guard. The moment he felt and saw his brother vault over him, he instantly stopped spinning, sliding just a bit in the water, sword outstretched with one hand, blade edge facing his brother's neck.

And then he took a Bokken to the knee.

It hurt, but the way his sword was set up, he might have lost a leg in real life, but his brother would have lost his head.

"Hahaha that hurt a bit little brother."

Shaking his leg a bit, the pain went away, and he smilled, tapping his sword on the ground lightly.

"Wooden sword Sakura. Much lighter than a real one. I figured you would never have guessed that I really use this thing one handed."

Indeed, when he adopted the nodachi as a weapon it was cumbersome and he was quite slow, causing him to rely heavily on his surefooted style to keep opponents at bay with his reach. over time though, with intense training, he had gotten accustomed to the weight, and had switched from a two handed style to a one handed style. Now, using a wooden one instead of a heavy metal one, it felt almost weightless in his hand, the extra bits of "momentum" and the wind ups being simple feints to his brother.

Laughing again, he stepped backwards, sword still in one hand, and with his other hand he gestured to his brother.

"Come"

Sakura grimaced.

He would have taken Keiichi-nii's leg, but Keiichi-nii would have taken his head....

The amethyst-eyed blonde rose, and the two brothers took a step back from each other, Sakura taking his bokken into a two-handed grip once again.

"Come."

Inhale.

Focus.

One-handed or two-handed, neither was really better than the other, but knowledge of both allowed for more flexibility.

Exhale.

Tranquil amethyst eyes met brown once again and Sakura once again crossed the distance between them, feinting downward strike to his older brother's head before spinning around to his back again, feinting a blow at his back before spinning once more and darting past his brother's front, bokken with its back against his upper arm, aiming a slice diagonally upward across his brother's chest, only to swing his bokken back and up around his own head, transitioning into a diagonal downwards slice at what was likely his brother's arm.

This time he was moving faster, adjusting and learning to compensate for the slick ground.

Speed, combinations, fluidity, circular movements to add momentum and power and flow.

But this was, hopefully, just the beginning of their second match.

Indeed, his brothers style was different, but this time so was he. Attacks and defense rooted in the ground like a tree would not see this fight won, his brothers style clearly showing a liking to misdirection, a very shinobi tactic, rather than relying on pure speed and power. Still, deception was a part of war, and broadcasting ones strategies would never win a fight unless the opponent did the same. To this end, Keiichi chose to forgo his primary style in favor of a more fluid one.

The size of his weapon was indeed cumbersome to a normal person, but for him, it was his advantage, able to be used as it was, like a katana, or like a polearm. He had followed his brothers first two attacks to the tee, but the second and third caught him off guard, causing him to take a full step backwards, creating enough space to avoid the presumed attack. It was then that he saw his brother had faked the attacks, continuing to move around him. Instead of following around him trying to play catch up, keiichi decided to cut him off, swinging his blade towards where his brother would be. The move left him open from behind, but his brother had already moved from there, and now his own blade was hurtling at his brothers side, meeting him where he would next be. A quick change in his grip moved the hilt upwards, changing from an attack to a defense, Intercepting what he thought was an upwards slash, yet the size of the blade also defended from the downward.

Now he would create an unusual situation, jumping and pulling his blade towards him, causing it to stand on its tip and he performed a handstand atop it, the length of his blade putting his body out of harms way while giving him a view of what was going down below. While half of hism ind was watching the current, the other half traced his brothers previous path, trying to figure out what his next would be.

He'd gotten Keiichi-nii to move.

It was a fleeting, victorious thought as Sakura darted from the ground and up his brother's wooden sword, his bokken slashing upwards, only to narrowly miss his opponent as the latter pushed off from the nodachi and into the air.

Sakura kicked off from the nodachi, knocking it over, as Keiichi-nii flipped and went into a drop-kick towards his younger brother.

Amethyst eyes winced as the younger landed, a sharp pain as he twisted his ankle, managing to side-step just as Keiichi-nii landed in a narrow miss; Sakura's bokken slashed through the air, aiming for the older's neck as the younger flowed through the proper footwork, the blade missing as Keiichi-nii bent backwards--

--and the twisting momentum sent another sharp pain through Sakura's ankle, and natural instincts to remove the weight from the injury sent him tumbling face-first into the ground.

...Keiichi-nii's win again.

It was a flawed victory, one he wished he didn't have to accept for both his brothers and his own pride. Still, as Keiichi walked over to his brother, hand outstretched, his face showed only the brotherly warmth that he always gave. His brother was getting stronger, and in no time he would be equal to or stronger than him. If was a moment of pride for him, and yet he wondered what consequence it would have. Would his brother chose a path of understanding and using his skills as needed, or would he rely on them as a crutch and a solution.

"Come on Sakurai... lets go get that ankle checked out and get cleaned up. the ceremony cant be too far away."

From the folds of his clothes, Yuke emerged, his little mouth chirping out squeaks like no tomorrow. From a pouch on his hip, Keiichi pulled out a small orange, giving a slice to Yuke as he split the rest in two, handing half to Sakura and eating the other himself. Back towards the palace they went, Sakura limping a bit but walking on his own two feet, bearing the pain rather than showing himself incapable of moving by himself.

There were scrapes here and there on his face and hands from the fall, but Sakura ignored them as he accepted his brother's help up, silently swallowing the embarrassment of his manner of loss along with the first juices of his half of the orange.

If that had been a real battle, though, he'd probably be dead.

He still had a long way to go.

As Sakura limped along, amethyst eyes faced ahead, listening to the sounds of wind through the trees and Yuke's chirps, his thoughts reflecting on the fact that he would have to take a break from physical training until the sprain was healed.

A brief visit with the palace physician, orders for rest and elevation of the injury and cleaning and bandaging the scrapes, as well as a tight bandaging of his ankle as a compression, and Sakura was back in his room, changing out of the dampened kimono in favor of one patterned in blue and gold, more suitable for a speech, but still far from his most formal attire.... His bokken was returned to its proper place and he slid his sheathed katana into his obi sash, adjusting it so that it was comfortable before running his hands through his hair to go back outside, amethyst eyes looking up to the sky, the compress around his ankle serving well enough to reduce his limp, though he kept his weight on his good leg while standing.

Aside from the new advisor, it really was like any other day.

Sakura stretched his arms overhead, sighed, and headed towards the palace gates to meet Keiichi-nii before they headed out into the streets.

After he dropped Sakura to the physician, Keiichi took a moment to himself to clean up again. He wiped himself down and made sure that all traces of their previous hour were off his body. It didn't take long, and he spent most of his time simply sitting in his room, staring upwards into the crafted skylight. he was a daydreamer to the fullest extent, and always thought of what it would be like to be a bird. free, without ties or worries, without rules or tradition or duty, just free.

Before he knew it though, he had slipped from daydreaming to full on dreaming, and it was only the sound of Yuke's chirps, along with his tiny hands on Keiichi's face that brought him back to reality.

"Thanks a bunch partner. I wouldn't want to be late twice today..."

It wasn't long before he reached the place gates, and to no one's surprise, Sakura was already there waiting.

"Shall we?"
