Life Goes On (Hanya)

[ \Sakura Hiroba | Kamiza | Yomi/ ]
The capital city of Raikou no Kuni, nestled between mountain peaks in the center of the country. Its altitude and location lead to common snowfall, though it is not necessarily cold throughout the year, clear days often leading to be as warm as summer. At the southern end of this star-shaped city lies a great stone bridge spanning a large lake, connecting to the road back down to the rest of the world. The home of both the Daimyo and Kamiza, the Onigami Compounds.

Sakura nodded, lightly pushing off from the gate wall he'd been leaning against as he waited.

"Let's go ahead and get to where the speech will take place, find a good spot to listen from before it gets crowded...."

The two headed through the gates into the Cherry Blossom Square, Sakura falling into step beside Keiichi-nii--silently noticing the latter's slight adjustment in pace in favor of the younger's sprained ankle--before his stomach growled, and Sakura grimaced slightly for a moment.

It was past noon, and they had yet to eat lunch due to their spar....

"Hmm.... It seems as though we have more pressing matters than even the speech little brother. What say we make a quick detour in the city and see if we cant find ourselves something to eat."

Sakura nodded reluctantly as Keiichi took a left, away from the square where the speech would be held, in favor of more pertinent matters. The streets were alive and well, with everyday life going on as usual. A few minutes walk and they reached a crowded bazaar where merchants and shoppers haggled for the best deal on everything from jewelry and clothing to fresh fruit and foreign spices. Keiichi's eyes, or rather his nose fell on a small street vendor cart though, where a dark haired girl was handing out an assortment of things, money being shoved at her almost as fast as she could take it.

"That place looks popular..."

As they got closer, he began to identify the different things there. Dumplings, chicken, squid, sweet cakes, iced drinks, everything a person could imagine was there, and though the girl running it was quite busy and obviously successful, her face seemed to have a small frown on it.

"Order 437, 438, and 440!" "Hey! What about 439?" "Just A minute" "Hey, i'm next" "Thats mine" "Excuse me"

Keiichi couldn't hear it or see it from further away, but the girl was over run, she needed help. Her success was coming at a price. Still, they waited in the small line, and when it came time for them to order, Keiichi finally was able to make out the girl's nametag.

"Hello Ms. Kou. Can I have two Yakitori, and two Okonomiyaki... with everything..."

Turning to his brother, he added, "And he will have...."

"One mochi, two dango, one taiyaki...." Sakura paused at the girl's expression over his ordering only sweets and cleared his throat, slightly averting his eyes as he continued, "...one yakitori, and one okonomiyaki, also with everything."

He needed to make sure he didn't fall into the trap of only eating sweets, anyway....

The girl numbered their orders, and the brothers fell back to wait, amethyst eyes wandering to spot a white-haired young girl in a hooded, well-worn travel cloak looking about at the various food vendors and giving a defeated sigh....

Sakura frowned slightly.

The destruction of Kumogakure no Sato and bandit raids had likely left many orphaned and homeless....

Kou-san called their numbers, and the brothers retrieved their food and paid.

However, before eating, Sakura walked to the girl with his slight limp, offering her his yakitori and one of his dango.

"Here... you looked hungry," he said softly.

Blood red eyes looked up at him in startled surprise before shyly smiling, hesitantly taking the offered food in each hand. "...thank you."

Sakura nodded. "Do... you want to come join my brother and I? We're just passing some time for now."

The girl hesitated for a long moment before quietly nodding, following him back to Keiichi-nii.

"Sakura."

"...Koyuki."

Sakura bit into his okonomiyaki then, as it proved the most difficult thing to carry rather than his sweets, just as the girl bit into the first bit of meat of her yakitori.

Good boy Sakura...

Keiichi had also noticed the girl walking around, eyeing a vendor with disappointed eyes. He actually was beaming with pride as he saw his brother offer some of his food to her, remembering how at one time Sakura would have simply noticed the girl and continued on with his day. the boy was definitely growing into a fine person, one with both caring and wisdom, even if 90% of his diet was sweets.

"Well, well, well. it seams as if Sakura has made himself a new friend. And what would your name be?"

He looked down on the girl, noting her pale white hair and crimson eyes, quite strange for a normal person, but he didn't take it to heart. She seemed nice enough, and shy, and didn't seem like much of a danger to anyone. His warm smile hopefully set her at ease as they walked, Keiichi eyeing a few of the vendors items. He folded his Okonomiyaki in half, making it much easier to handle, and placed his yakitori skewer within. He repeated the process with the second pair before pulling both skewers out. All the while, he continued to obseve everything around him.

The girl quickly chewed and swallowed, once again saying, though with less hesitation, "Koyuki." Quiet crimson eyes watched the older of the brothers, waiting for a moment, before her gaze shifted to the hidden creature within folds of his clothing, curious.

Sakura, meanwhile, was still carefully eating his okonomiyaki after having managed to fold it like Keiichi-nii's, thoughts wandering even as he noted yet another adjustment of the group's pace. Koyuki-chan reminded him of some of the local urchins, in a way.... He'd stepped in to stop fights or protect the weaker side when he was younger and exploring with his old bokken. Fights had always been simple, but stopping for casual interaction, or to help in some small way like this... had never been as easy.

Amethyst eyes glanced down at the girl, only to find crimson eyes meeting his, seeming to see deep within.

"...you remind me a little of my onii-chan."

Sakura swallowed too quickly in his startlement and nearly choked, ending up in a coughing fit, though still managing not to spill or drop his food somehow. The girl, meanwhile, grew startled, darting off and managing to quickly haggle a cup of water out of a nearby vendor with a vigor previously hidden, running back and holding it up to Sakura's lips to drink on tip-toe since his hands were full, the latter drinking gratefully to clear his throat before sighing.

He wasn't having the best luck today....

"Thank you.... Here, I'll give you the money to pay."

The dango was held in his teeth, the taiyaki carefully shifted to his other hand, and Sakura reached into his obi where his money pouch was stored, retrieving a coin and placing it in the girl's palm, and in short order the water was paid for as Sakura was catching his breath.

Amethyst eyes turned to Keiichi-nii with a slight grimace, as if to say One of those days.... before Koyuki-chan returned, crimson eyes still concerned as she gazed up at Sakura.

Keiichi looked on at his brothers coughing fit, Seeing it as an opportunity to let him and the girl bond over his life. Instead of helping, he took a large bite of his meal and spotted a salesman that had water, grabbing the girl's attention as she looked to him without a clue of what to do. He nodded that way, signaling her to go get some from there. She ran off, grabbing him some water and was back in only a moment. The girls eyes were kind indeed, and he wondered what kind of life she lived, or by the looks of it had lived. It wasn't really his place to ask though, since this was his brother's new friend, but he was always so interested in the stories of people. Still, he would keep his own desires in check, and he would enjoy this delicious meal. Maybe he would even go back for more if he felt the speech was a bit too dry.

Shit.... the speech....

He though back to the time they had set out, and though about how long it had taken them to walk to get food, wait in line, and walk back. If they didn't get a move on then they would be late, and if they were late then they wouldn't get their seats, and if that happened then... he didn't want to think about the lecture about time management that he would get if he was late to something like this.

"Sakura... I think we should be heading to the speech now. Wouldn't want to be late now would we...."

"...not good. Koyuki-chan, you can follow if you want, but we need to hurry." Amethyst eyes had grown calm and sharp as he began moving ahead, ignoring his aching ankle as he picked up the pace, quickly finishing his okonomiyaki and moving on to his taiyaki with the swift discipline of one used to having to eat quickly between practices.

Koyuki shifted into a slight jog to keep up, crimson eyes glancing down to Sakura-san's ankle in quiet concern as she continued eating her yakitori at a calmer pace; she could tell the blonde needed to keep up appearances at the speech, even if he was likely going to watch from the crowd, but....

...she felt eyes upon her and looked up to meet Sakura-san's brother's gaze, giving a small smile of reassurance to show that she didn't mind the increased pace before looking ahead again to watch where she was going. According to what she'd heard, his name was... Keiichi-san. The brothers seemed kind enough, which was a good sign, and they felt like good people.

But so were the Onigami with their prejudices.

Sakura had finished his taiyaki and mochi and was eating the last sweet ball of dango when they arrived near the rear of the crowd, the blonde depositing the stick in a nearby wastebin before turning his amethyst eyes ahead--only to have his sleeve tugged by little Koyuki-san, curiously leaning forward at her direction before awkwardly looking away as she wiped a bit of sauce from his mouth with a handkerchief, straightening again once she nodded and smiled. "...thanks."

Koyuki simply nodded again, tucking the handkerchief away into her cloak as she found a nicely-sized decorative rock to stand on, just high enough for her to see.

Sakura straightened his shoulders at the sight of the Captain of the Onigami second squad and acting leader of the Onigami, Hideaki-dono, standing beside the Daimyo. Hideaki-dono was old, a testament to his ability to survive despite the rough times Raikou had passed through even in Sakura's life, but he was also tall and held himself in a way any swordsman would recognize and respect, even if his face was much like any kind old man's. His hair was short, white, and clean-cut, and his mustache was trimmed with the same precision. He was wearing the standard Onigami black gi and the captain's haori. Behind him were only one or two squads, the rest likely still patrolling to keep the city and country safe.

As Hideaki-dono stepped forward on the small platform raised for the occasion and cleared his throat, the crowd hushed from its earlier chattering, and the Captain spoke in a way that commanded all attention yet still remained soft.

"Hear me citizens! For too long you have been under the rule of the shinobi! Backstabbers in the night, they have no honor amongst their ranks! They ruled you, ruled your lives and promised to protect you! But was it not a ninja that brought about just destruction? Was it not a conflict amongst shinobi that created such calamity? Was it not their fault that you were driven out of your homes in the dead of the night only to watch them be destroyed as you flee, again and again!?

"We serve our lord and the people! It is our duty to protect those that are weaker than us, those that cannot protect themselves! We are not shinobi, we are samurai! We stare our enemy in the face while keeping our people at our back! We do not draw our conflicts to those that cannot defend themselves and we execute those that do!

"Bow your heads to us! Bow your heads and we shall offer you our swords! Show your faith, loyalty and servitude to us and we will never allow harm to befall you ever again!"

Cheers were raised from the crowd, and Sakura's eyes widened at the speech before he smiled. It was true; the shinobi had always sworn to protect and had failed over and over again, destroying so many innocent lives in the process. But perhaps the Onigami and all other honorable samurai would be able to hold and keep the peace at last.

Crimson eyes watched the inspired smile form on the youngest son's lips in silence, finishing off her yakitori and eating the first sweet dango ball. Koyuki's gaze shifted then to the elder son of the Daimyo to survey his response; if he reacted the same way, without thought... there was likely no hope.

Keiichi's eyes scanned the crowd, every face, every eye, every smile in the crowd, every frown, every blank stare. It was so weird, such mixed emotions from people who only wanted to protect. Of course there were still those who had their prejudice against the samurai and all like them, that would be a forever thing, but then there were also those who supported the shinobi, even now. Anyone could be evil if thery were human, it didnt matter whether they were shinobi, samurai, politician, or a common civilian. That was also Keiichi's position on the matter. It was better to secure saftey than to place blame, and yet when he looked at his brother, he only saw approval, and not questioning.

"Well, that was a rather rousing speech, wouldn't you say?"

The speech went on for a bit more, with a bit of exposition on the state of things, and more pledging of alleigence and calls to arms, but Keiichi's mind had already wandered away from the subject. What would become of those that were previously shinobi? Would they have a place in this new society, or would they be forced to the side like refuse. Would they be allowed to retire and live in peace, or would they be persecuted? While everyone was focused on the now, Keiichi was worried about the later. How would this work out in the event of a conflict against another village? Were Samurai enough? Were the Onigami fit to lead them? Was his father fit to lead them all?

Shaking his head, Keiichi looked around for any open concession stands, his throat was rather dry and something cool to drink would probably settle him a bit more than just thinking. Spotting a single stand still open, its owner still selling as he watched and listened to the speech, he tapped his brother and pointed, smiling before he excused himself.

Blood red eyes followed the older of the brothers as he excused himself to go get a drink... and after a few moments she quietly followed, leaving Sakura-san to his entrancement with the samurai, gently catching a corner of Keiichi-san's sleeve to get his attention, meeting his gaze without any of her earlier shyness, only calm.

"Keep thinking, Keiichi-san. Because when you stop, you run out of choices," she said quietly. "Sakura-san... he's not very good with thinking about the world logically, is he? A little naive. Make sure you look after him well. I hope the next time we meet will be peaceful again." Little Koyuki smiled gently. "Sayounara, Keiichi-san. May your rule, when it comes,be peaceful and prosperous. Please tell Sakura-san that I am sorry for my sudden departure, but I have friends to find."

And then the girl bowed respectfully before walking away, soon vanishing within the crowd.

It was a few more minutes before Sakura noticed the little white-haired girl was gone, amethyst eyes looking around in a mix of surprise and worry before he slipped out of the slowly departing crowd, the speech done, and rejoined Keiichi-nii.

"Koyuki-chan's disappeared.... Did you see where she went?"

As the little girl, Koyuki, spoke to keiichi, he looked at her eyes, at her face, at her very heart. She could see the sadness in them and knew that whatever the samurai had said, it had hurt her. Her words, as nice as they were, they confirmed it. Either she was a shinobi, or she had people close to her that were. He understood what she was feeling as well, a few close friends of his, from the time when he was allowed to mingle with the commoners freely, they had been shinobi, and they had died in the Kumogakure disaster. He understood people, and he knew that no group of people could be to blame for any persons actions. Every person chose their own path, and to hunt people, to persecute them for what they might do, it was absurd.

"I understand little one, however, dont underestimate my brother either. it is true that he doesn't necceesariily see all sides, but he does think, and he does care. maybe he just needs someone or something to help him see what to care about."

Keiichi waved to her as she departed, hoping too that their next meeting would be a peaceful one. Grabbing a drink for the concession stand, he headed back to his brother. The samurai were almost done with the rest of the formalities, and the event was almost over. Life would go back to normal, or at least as normal as possible, but how would this new... security... turn out.

"Koyuki-chan's disappeared.... Did you see where she went?"

"She had to take care of some things. I'm sure you will see her again. Do you like her, brother?"

Sakura frowned slightly at Keiichi-nii's answer and question, amethyst eyes gazing off into the crowd as if to spot the vanished little girl, the heel of his left hand resting lightly on the handle of his katana.

"...she reminds me of the local orphans."

His right hand ran through blonde hair before a sharp whistle drew everyone's eyes to the sky, followed by a thunderous crack as bright colors painted the darkening sky: fireworks for Raikou's new great protectors, the samurai.
