All the variables kept rolling around in Edo's head as he waited. Understanding the endgame helped tell of the moves that get you there, like this smoke. There was too much of it to come from a simple smoke bomb. Even the Nara's own custom tags wouldn't make something like this. The obvious choice is the blind an opponent, even obscure their other senses like smell to leave them vulnerable to a surprise attack. However, that only made sense if the one that casts the cloud had some means of not falling victim to the same negative effects of the cloud. Edo hadn't picked up the impression that this guy was a sensor type. Not only that, but he wasn't even a ninja, and the scar-faced Tsuchi-nin didn't even think samurai could do such things. Or rather, he didn't know if samurai could even use jutsu.
It was why Edo had remained motionless in the smoke waiting. He had to judge the enemies ability to picking him out within the natural senses. The smoke already eliminated those of sight, scent, and taste. As for his immobility, those took out the other two, hearing and touch. In the Land of Earth, there were many skilled shinobi that could sense vibrations, so even if that wasn't the more common methods of tracking, the Nara knew to compensate for such a thing. If he could be found out with all that in consideration it'd answer at least one question, even if raising several others.
It's only when the assault began that Edo too action. However, it wasn't the sound of kunai or shuriken zipping through the air. Anyone could throw one of those easily. With the click of the hilt, the Nara released instead his sword into precision flight, the weapon becoming like a spinning Fuuma shuriken as it sailed at the smoke-hidden samurai in a rapid buzz saw spin.
However, that was only the distraction. By the time his sword would make contact, he had already escaped the smog. If only by luck, the moved scenery did not create an obstacle for him, but only because his path took him straight up, a trail of the smoke behind him as he leapt high into the air. His hands met in the first credible hand-signs he had made thus far, coursing through them before unclipping the same pouch on his flak as he had for the start of this battle along with its partner on the opposite side of his chest to drop two gold scrolls that quickly unfurled into a rapid dance around him as he remain in the air. ] After that it began to rain weapons down int the smoke that had started to clear. Even so, Edo had to trade multitude for precision not yet able to tell the exact location of hits opponent other than by sound. His movements, even if his defenses were telling. To defend against one of the weapons, of countless shapes and sizes, would signal even clearer where it was he was hidden, and about the only thing Edo wasn't targeting for was where the Nara believed the bandit bodies were based off of his mental mapping of the terrain earlier.
