Truly, the battle of the mind was a more entertaining one than the battle of the mind. Every action had a reaction, and every advance had a consequence. His horizontal slash was jumped over, leaving his back open, but his opponent had jumped, leaving him unable to maneuver at will in the air. His opponent had a throwing weapon, something easy to see as an opportunity, and yet he had already seen the speed in which his weapons were thrown, and had already shown that they could be deflected with ease.

Still, there was no need to deflect when you could dodge. Turning back around, thanking his intuition for creating a slower attack, he had more control of his body and could turn on his heel, just in time to see the streaks of metal flying towards him from above.

One, Two, Three.....

He counted them as they came, stepping first back then to the left, only to be greeted by his opponents lunge. He remembered a man that attacked similarly to that, many straight thrusts that had left many an opponent riddled with more holes than a round of swiss cheese. Dodging was always an option, but his sides would probably take the hit at that range. Blocking was even more difficult, the small target almost impossible to get an edge on. He had two other options, taking the hit in an attempt to counter and send them both to their doom, or to parry and hope that he could get his opponents sword far enough away from him before it pierced. Luckily for him, his dodging of the kunai gave him a half of a second more time to decide and move, as well as a more advantageous angle to parry from.

Continuing hard to the left, he swiped his blade to the right, attempting to guide his opponent away from him and hopefully off balance him in the process.

The clink of metal signaled the deflection of Edo's sword. The momentum he'd gained from the springing leap, combined with poor footing since he had not had much traction on the ground when the assault was launched, sent his body the way of the blade. Off balanced, his lunge turned into a tumble as he tucked and rolled. This would leave him vulnerable, and he knew it. To avoid any damage from his own weapon, before his shoulder hit ground, he let go his double hand grip and drew the weapon in tight and pointed off to the side. As he came out of the roll and with the help of a chakra laden palm adhering him tighter to the ground, Edo was brought to a crouched position mere feet from where the last scuffle transpired.

He wouldn't be able to block a strike, nor would he try to. Instead, as with before, but this time away from his opponent, he pushed himself back into a leap in open air. As his hand that had gripped the ground move it revealed the tag he had retrieved as he rolled and slapped down as he gripped. Still jumping, he loosed his grip on the sword, holding the tip of the hilt with his last two gloved fingers as the front two and thumb formed into a basic concentration sign. "Kai!" [Release]

An explosion erupted from the purple ink tab, though while it was as large as the fiery blast that resulted from a normal explosive tag, in place of fire was a massive blast of brightly colored shredded paper. The explosion of confetti filled the air immediately around where he had recovered with the party favor, and was perhaps the largest distraction to be used in this battle. At the very least, it was more show-offish than a falling bird. However, it wasn't meant for mere spectacle as Edo did not drop his concentration sign, but instead switched its focus to the chakra he had gathered in his ungloved hand. Throwing a punch, he activated his sleeve scroll more thoroughly than it had been used previously. "Sougu: Fuujin no Kabe" [Tool Manipulation: Wall of the Wind God]

A train of 25 kunai, shrunken, and senbon, sporadic in order, released itself from within his long green sleeve towards the samurai. His earlier weapons may have been avoided or deflected, but the multiplicity of this next attack added new dynamics to it. Worse yet, when coupled with larger, more noticeable weapons like the kunai and shrunken, the attention is drawn away from the less lethal flying senbon thrown into the mix. While they wouldn't come close to landing a kill, not that Edo was actually trying to kill this native to the Land of Lightning, the purpose of the thrown needles was pain, the deliverance of which was a necessity in a war of attrition.

Good...Wait a minute......

He was already preparing to move into his next attack when Edo sprang back into a jump. It was a good way to preemptivley avoid a close range attack, but it caused him a second of pause. Samurai were not known for relenting in their attacks, or giving their opponent space to move or weave seals, but they did have an excellent battle awareness, and the ability to react in split seconds in order to counter sword blows. It was that training that would give him the second he needed to jump back, avoiding what he expected to be an explosion. He had seen tags before, many many tags, and even though he noticed the strange color, he didn't want to stick around to find out what it meant.

Jumping back, His eyes widened as he saw the mass of shredded paper everywhere. He almost smiled thinking how foolish it was, and then remembered that he was up against a shinobi that had proven himself quite capable of seriously injuring a group of attackers, going toe to toe with a "samurai", and a host of other things.

"Nope"

Under the same cover as Edo was using, he weaved a very short set of handsigns, a strange puff of smoke coming from his robes before forming into a body double of him. He himself quickly moved out of the way, his body floating in and out of the paper like a ghost.

His clone stood, sword drawn as he was, ready to face whatever would be the end result of the party in a tag.

*zew...zewzewzew zew*

It was the telltale sound of throwing tools, again, and he prepared to block the maybe three or four that were coming through, probably three to follow pattern, but as the metal came and the paper fell, the sheer number flying at him made him smile. Forgoing a two handed grip for a single, he pulled free his sheath, using it as a second sword and went to work. The first few weapons found themselves flying off to the sides and such, carefull not to hit them towards himself, but as a small rhythm started, he began to send a few back the way they had came.

That was until the sharp sting of metal met his skin, and then another, and then another. He was blocking all the kunai and shuriken, and yet something was still hitting him, and hitting him rather nicely at that. Oh well, no biggie.

*Boof*

A billowing cloud of black grey smoke exploded, the rest of the barrage of weapons finding their way to a tree and the forest behind. The smoke quickly spread, taking the place of the confetti. Just as it swept over the area, removing vision from everyone's equation, a dark sentence would reach Edo, seemingly coming from everywhere at once, and yet even close enough to feel his opponents breath tickle his ears.

"Now its my turn...".

Edo's feet turned up dirt as his sandals slid against the ground coming out of his landing. From within the cloud of confetti a few of his shuriken came flying back at him. The young Nara greeted them in the same manner that the samurai had been keeping with against many of Edo's weapons to this point. Getting back a firm grip on the sword he had pulled forth from one of his scrolls earlier, the weapon's specialist streaked steel across sky and deflected the weapons, a mere fraction of those that had been sent out.

The explosion of smoke bellowed out of the falling party favor and filled the area with thicker smog than the clouds that had come off Edo's earlier explosive notes from before the scuffle began. There was too much of it to come from mere smoke bombs. Not only that, but it lingered in the air differently. Keeping his grip firm on the sword as he took a few silent steps, Edo's other hand reached back and gripped ahold the hilt of the tanto sized blade that was mounted horizontally on the lower back of his flak jacket. A smile crossed his face as his blinded eyes shut. The sunglasses still resting on his face never came off, not even at night. Keep with that long enough, and darkness doesn't become a problem.

"'Bout time this got serious."

Check.

And just like that, the true fight was on. While most people thrived on sight, on knowing where ones opponent was and reading their moves, it seemed that this man in the grey kimono, and even his opponent, they thrived in the darkness. Both parties had their eyes closed, focused on where their quarry might be, listening for any movement, feeling for any disturbance, but while one waited to react, the other was already moving to win.

his hand had moved from his sword to his other hand, molding seals into 1, 2, 3, 4, and slowly but surely his chakra foundd itself dispersed throughout the smoke. His ploy was simple this time though. He would create a few fake trees, and move some of the ones that were there to other places. It didn't seem like much, but when the smoke cleared, he knew that his opponent would be trying to use them for both cover and leverage, it was just a good practice. To move those things, to create a false hope or a false alternative, it would make all the idference.

He preferred to keep his use of ninja techniques to a minimum though, which was why he chose such a subtle tactic. Now, he would focus on attacking from the darkness, and play the waiting game.

"Here I come..."

He spoke from the left of Edo, probably about 10 meters off, but he was moving, moving towards his front, waiting for the glimmer and whiste of a kunai or shuriken, the pitter patter of footsteps, the coarse voice that accompanied a reply. he waited for opportunity to welcome him in.

All the variables kept rolling around in Edo's head as he waited. Understanding the endgame helped tell of the moves that get you there, like this smoke. There was too much of it to come from a simple smoke bomb. Even the Nara's own custom tags wouldn't make something like this. The obvious choice is the blind an opponent, even obscure their other senses like smell to leave them vulnerable to a surprise attack. However, that only made sense if the one that casts the cloud had some means of not falling victim to the same negative effects of the cloud. Edo hadn't picked up the impression that this guy was a sensor type. Not only that, but he wasn't even a ninja, and the scar-faced Tsuchi-nin didn't even think samurai could do such things. Or rather, he didn't know if samurai could even use jutsu.

It was why Edo had remained motionless in the smoke waiting. He had to judge the enemies ability to picking him out within the natural senses. The smoke already eliminated those of sight, scent, and taste. As for his immobility, those took out the other two, hearing and touch. In the Land of Earth, there were many skilled shinobi that could sense vibrations, so even if that wasn't the more common methods of tracking, the Nara knew to compensate for such a thing. If he could be found out with all that in consideration it'd answer at least one question, even if raising several others.

It's only when the assault began that Edo too action. However, it wasn't the sound of kunai or shuriken zipping through the air. Anyone could throw one of those easily. With the click of the hilt, the Nara released instead his sword into precision flight, the weapon becoming like a spinning Fuuma shuriken as it sailed at the smoke-hidden samurai in a rapid buzz saw spin.

However, that was only the distraction. By the time his sword would make contact, he had already escaped the smog. If only by luck, the moved scenery did not create an obstacle for him, but only because his path took him straight up, a trail of the smoke behind him as he leapt high into the air. His hands met in the first credible hand-signs he had made thus far, coursing through them before unclipping the same pouch on his flak as he had for the start of this battle along with its partner on the opposite side of his chest to drop two gold scrolls that quickly unfurled into a rapid dance around him as he remain in the air. "Sougu: Soushouryuu" [Tool Manipulation: Twin Rising Dragon] After that it began to rain weapons down int the smoke that had started to clear. Even so, Edo had to trade multitude for precision not yet able to tell the exact location of hits opponent other than by sound. His movements, even if his defenses were telling. To defend against one of the weapons, of countless shapes and sizes, would signal even clearer where it was he was hidden, and about the only thing Edo wasn't targeting for was where the Nara believed the bandit bodies were based off of his mental mapping of the terrain earlier.

Description: This is an effective weaponry technique that utilizes a prepared scroll that has had weapons sealed within it. This technique draws its name from the fact that normally two small identical scrolls are used in its performance, though really any scroll can be utilized so long as there are weapon seals upon it. For this technique that user will first form hand-signs before leaping high into the air and unraveling the scrolls in a helix around them. By doing this, the user exposes the interior surface area of the scroll, and gives themselves access to the many seals that may be written on the shinobi tool. By waving their hand over the placement of a seal, whatever weapon is locked inside will appear in their hand through a puff of smoke. The user can then take advantage of their accuracy and launch a fast-paced multi-weapon assault against the target that can easily overwhelm the guard of an opponent.

Thud

Thud Thud

Thud Thud Thud Thud Thud Thud Thud Thud Thud Thud Thud Thud Thud Thud Thud Thud Thud Thud Thud Thud Thud Thud Thud

The barrage of weapons was a surprise to the grey samurai, his trickery beforehand lending no sort of advantage to him whatsoever. Indeed, his plan seemed to have backfired, his vision being negligible and the barrage of weapons that rained down on him coming from some unknown origin. Still, this samurai was not without plan and this event simply made his previous plan all the more ingenious. A Short set of handseals and a deep breath were his only two movements as his body slowly faded into the smoke. Thread and clasp, skin and bone, they all faded away into nothingness, and yet found themselves a part of everything. He had become one with the smoke.

His eyes were everywhere, his touch just as omnipresent, and though he could feel the barrage of metal, it simply passed through him. He floated about the small clearing, searching for his opponent for as long as he could, his incorporeal body having been integrated into the smog, but after a short amount of time he was without success in finding his opponent. Since the rain of metal had come from above, he assumed that his opponent had either thrown something upwards or jumped. If he had jumped then he would have had to come back down, but if he had thrown something, then there would either have to be a blind spot in his attack, or some sort of shield. If there was a blind spot he would have stumbled on it, and if there was a shield then the weapons would have to hit it, and when they did they would make some sort of sound, he hoped. He heard none and felt nothing so assumed the former.

Unfortunatley for him though, his breath was running low, and when he exhaled he would be vulnerable. His opponents barrage of weapons seemed to have no end to it, so his only choice was to retreat out of the smoke for now. With the last of his breath he maneuvered himself to the outskirts of the smoke, and exhaled, his lungs screaming for air. Particle after particle came together until he was whole again, and there he stood, his opponent probably never knowing what had happened.

When his barrage finally ended and he started his decent the hands that had been hurling weapons of all shapes and sizes clutched onto the bulk of the spinning scrolls. Quickly he tucked the rolled paper into either of his sides at the hip. The portion of the scrolls that were unfurled hung of its sides, though more like archest as he also tucked the ends of the scrolls in along with the rest. The last thing he did in he free fall was summon 16 more kunai blades that he quickly strung with steel wire and released in multiple directions. Each wire had to it two kunai attached, one at either end. They were thrown in opposite directions each just below him, so that by the time his feet touched at the center of where the wires met he was being supported by the tension strung between the blades pierced into trees throughout the area.

The Nara crouched, supported by his high wire, overtop the cloud of smoke. He intentionally avoided reentering the lingering cloud given its origin, and its oddity. By now the smoke should have cleared. The cloud that had resulted from Edo's initial tags cleared away without cause, and from his elevated position he could tell that the wind on this mountain region hadn't died off. That fact it still remained must have meant that there was chakra laced in it, but that wasn't the only thing troubling the bespectacled boy. Throughout his assault, there hadn't been a single reaction. No clinks, no dings. Not a single one of his countless weapons had been deflected, and there also were none of the moans that could be expected had any of the projectiles met their mark. Giving it another go would be pointless as the tactician seriously doubted his opponent was even in the mix any longer. Had he taken the opportunity to flee the battle?

That didn't seem likely. "Are you sure you're not a ninja?" The young Nara's voice called out from his perch. "Were you an Onoda, I'd see how you could come out of that unscathed, but I thought you samurai were supposed to be all swords and no seals." That had been the introduction the gray kimonoed man had given him, why it was the samurai had been able to cut down so many shinobi in their battles.

"Hahahaha... indeed... all swords and no seals does seem like what samurai are all about....."

His voice came from just as everywhere as Edo's did, though the man was eagerly searching for his opponent's true location. His own smoke had proved an ineffective weapon against this man, simply for the fact that he was a walking armory, and could spew a hailstorm of weapons at any time. Still, the smoke made him feel good, it made him feel calm, it was a realm that he could thrive in that his opponent could not. He was reluctant to remove it because then, instead of the barrage of weapons being aimed at everywhere, it would be aimed at him, however, when fighting against a shinobi, cover and deception were their allies just as much as they were his.

Grabbing the hilt of his sword, he focused chakra into it, while it was still in the sheath, and when he drew it, he released that chakra in a wide arc. Just as he did, a large crescent of wind flew forward, straight across the smoke. He hadn't heard his opponent land, not that he would have now, but he assumed he had. This blade of wind would move through the smoke and cut him deeply if it could. If not, it would split the smoke in two, giving him the definite on whether his opponent was in there or not. He didn't expect him to run since he had egged on the fight, but maybe he was just that tricky.

Maybe.

Coaxing his opponent to speak confirmed for the Nara that his opponent hadn't fled the battlefield under cover of smoke. However, the transaction did little to pinpoint the location of the samurai within the cloud. Just as before, the man's voice seemed to come from all over. The crouched Nara was ready to unleash more of his arsenal, though he'd be little other then adding to the weapons littering the ground were he to attack again within an idea of where his opponent was hiding. Whatever the case, the worst place to be was back in the smoldering mix. It was times like this the Nara wished he had focused more on his Ninjutsu. If he had mastered the wind style at all, or even had just a rudimentary understanding of it, he might have been able to clear the area of the annoyance the smoke had become.

The first hint from atop his perch came from the sweeping slash. While he didn't actually see the Fuuton manipulation, or even the cutting wind that sliced the midriff of the cloud in two, the sudden gust of wind though the cumulus caused a stir that waved the top of the smoke in the direction the slash was carried. Noticing the shift from behind his shades, he eyes trailed up in the opposite direction. "Got cha." He whispered to himself as he took off down the webbing steel line closest in the direction the disturbance had generated from.

His run down the narrow string ended in a slide with his body standing sideways on the line as his sandals slid him to a halt to the side of where his opponent stood on the outskirts of the smoke. His left hand was formed in concentration as his gloved hand crossed his waste. "Sougu: Fuujin no Kabe" [Tool Manipulation: Wall of the Wind God] A wave of 25 shrunken shot out in unison aimed for the torso and head.

Description: This is a technique usable with weapon scrolls, of which Edo carries many. By channeling chakra into the scroll the user is able to activate the seal in order to launch a rapid fire of the weapons sealed within the scrolls out towards the opponent. While the user is able to unleash these weapons in bursts to begin with, sending them flying the direction the seal on the scroll is facing, this technique uses more chakra then what is normally consumed to summon forth weapons in order to summon more weapons at once in quick succession. At Genin a single use of this technique can only result in a total of 25 weapons being launched at once, and multiple uses of this technique can prove tiring. For this technique a concentration sign must be used during the duration of this technique.

*zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzt*

It was an oddly familiar sound to the samurai's ears, one that he had heard time and time again, and yet it did not register to him at all. The sound of something sliding down a wire, his opponent's shoes, it went noticed but unrecognized. Louder and louder it went until suddenly, nothing.

*pooof*

It was the same sound he had heard time and time again from his opponent, a sound that he indeed did recognize, and almost without fail, he countered the small barrage of kunai, flinging them every which way before retreating back into the cloud of smoke, which had slowly resealed itself. he was playing the defensive game, something he wasn't too fond of, and with the opponent he was up against, that could go on forever. He had no idea how many weapons he had left, or even if there was a limit, but he did know that he was better off not being seen. Still, his bit of cover was only momentary, as he sheathed his sword, weaving seals withingthe cover of smoke. Whatever happened, his opponent would never see him making seal.

It was just unbecoming of a samurai.

Only moments after the man entered the smoke, it began to twist and churn, swirling around into first a hurricane, then condensing to a tornado, then finally condensing even smaller, the tornado stretching and elongating until it formed a head with two deep red eyes staring at Edo. Edo's web of wires, the graveyard of kunai, and even the lone samurai with his sword held high in the air, they were all revealed. The dragon seemed to come from his very being, its tail and his body one and the same, and as it hovered high into the sky, the samurai dropped his sword down towards his opponent, speaking with a calm yet commanding voice.

Description:A powerful formation of smoke, this technique creates a dragon capable of behaving like a wind natured attack with the added bonus of reducing visibility, and displacing air to the point that being hit by it can asphyxiate an opponent and render them unconscious or dead. By unleashing a continuous stream of smoke from their mouth, the user will use his chakra to shape the smoke into the form of a dragon. This gives him the advantage of short range attacks, and because the dragon is completely composed of smoke, physical attacks are useless against it. Its primary battle ability is to envelop and suffocate the target. However, as smoke is dissolved when it comes into contact with water, this technique is weak against water-based attacks and wind attacks can thoroughly disrupt it as well.

His shuriken became embedded in the earth in a large bundle of sharpened metal. As his enemy took off back into the persistent smokescreen, Edo followed in the same direction, though still atop his high wires. As he moved closer to the epicenter where they all crisscrossed he leapt to the side but didn't break his step as he continued running on a different one of the wires following the sound of the samurai's sheathing sword.

The Nara didn't launch more weapons before noticing the churning of the smoke. The cloud beneath him began to spin, condense, and speed up. As it did the results of his earlier barrage became clear, as weapons of various makes and types revealed themselves planted with their bladed ends pierced into ground just as his last wave of shuriken now were. Not a one was lain upon the ground, which meant each would have been a hit had they met a target instead of the earth. However, there wasn't time for admiration as the figure of a spiraling smoke dragon formed from the condensing smoke, complete with menacing eyes hungrily staring down the black-haired weapons master.

As the massive dragon barreled on him the Nara dodged, again springing himself off of one of the wires and onto another. Behind him the sound of a tethering snapping pierced the sky as the coil he had been standing on sliced in two and the dragon diverted to follow after its prey. Edo's sandaled feet turned himself around so that when next he pushed himself off he was facing towards his predator. In midair his hands reached down to the exposed scrolls along his side summoning out 8 kunai. Unlike the last spout, he didn't use a technique to launch the weapons, needing more precision this time through. Drawing his arms in an "X" across his chest as he landed on another one of his webbed wires, the attached explosive tags were clear hanging off of the kunai. "Hungry, huh?" His arms swiped across them aiming his shot into the gaping maw of the beast. "Bon appétit" His hands slapped together in a concentration sign. "KAI!" In close succession the explosive notes erupted within the vortex of the dragon, combining into one large explosion aimed at disrupting the jutsu entirely, though Edo not knowing if it would work.

Indeed, it was a good strategy. Keep moving, attack with force, keep moving, keep moving. The grey samurai's sword followed the Nara's movements, directing the dragons mouth towards him, trying to devour him whole, and yet it never seemed to make contact. With all its might and power, the beast was simply too large to redirect itself when Edo dodged. Across the wires it went, engulfing them for a moment without notice, and then....

*Boom Boom Boom*

A quick succession of explosions erupted near the dragon's mouth, an octuplet of tag laced kunai going off in almost perfect harmony. Unfortunately, a few of them passed clean through the dragons head, its smoky composition offering little resistance in terms of slowing them down, its whirling mass only serving to redirect the smoke down and outward.

Still, it was an effective technique, as the dragon's head became separated from its body, dispersing into the sky. Slowly, the rest of its body followed, neck, back, and tail. Nothing was left of it but faint whisps floating skyward.

"Delicious"

The voice came from a definite position this time, close. Too close for comfort. Too close for much more than fear.

Behind Edo, the grey samurai formed, his body going from ephemeral to solid with not even a sound. Only the pressure of his weight increasing on the wire as he solidified gave notice of his position, other than his voice of course.

Spoiler:
Name: Wraith
Rank: B
Range: -
Jutsu Type: Ninjutsu
Elemental Affinity: Smoke
Clan:Kawakami
Description:By converting ones chakra into smoke nature, they are able to transform their body as well, for the duration of a held breath. In this state they are immune to most physical attacks, with their bodies cells turned to particles, however many chakra attacks will still affect them as they affect any other thing. When their air runs out, they are forced back together, sometimes in less than opportune situations. If they become separated from part of their selves when they reform, that part will become lost to them, making wind techniques and barriers especially dangerous.

It was just the kind of solution an Iwa-nin would come up with. When faced with an impossible task, or at least one with no good answer, blow it up! There was a reason why the front lines of Earth Country shinobi were composed of members of the Explosion Corps. Whether it was the harsh, rocky terrain or the battlefield, they were experts at making rubble. Of coarse, this was a rare exception since you can't make debris from smoke. Still, following the tradition of his nation, the Nara had a lot of explosives in his arsenal, and they were the only half descent solution. He was a weapons and a Taijutsu specialist, but physical attacks did little to gender a body that wasn't physical itself. Not only that, but none of his shadow techniques would have been fruitful. A solid shadow still needed something it can dig into.

Luckily, at least for Edo, using enough explosives worked since he really didn't have any thing he could have thrown at a giant dragon made from smoke. However, he wasn't out of the fray yet. The sweat covered and scarred faced of the Nara showed shock from the surprise of his opponents appearance on the wire. He wasn't expecting a counter so close between his other technique. But then again, the samurai had proven himself fast before. It was all Edo could do to throw a backhand strike at the throat of the swordsman. Even when caught disarmed, he had Taijutsu to fall back on.

Edo had his taijutsu to fall back on, but he was up against someone who was supposed to be trained in the art of swordplay, not just Kenjutsu, but in using his sword as an extention of his very self, as boh body and embodiment. Whether it was close range, open battle, or anything inbetween, this man should have had the advantage.

And yet somehow, the move caugght him off guard.

Of course it didn't hit him, because no one in the world ever truly got hit by anything, but instead it caused him to react out of character. See this man, for all his "samurai" training, had proved himself more than capable of dodging, or deflecting a smaller faster target, but inside, his body told him to defend, while his samaurai training taught him to attack. This caused a conflict in his movements, in his motionsm one that he didn't expect anyone to see, but the one person with no eyes caught it full on.

The wire.

He had been using chakra to stabilize himself, his natural balance a little less than perfect, but his minds little bit of confusion had thrown it off, causing his chakra to spike wildly, and to lash out, causing the wire to snap, and he fell, just quick enough to avid the backfist, but in a way that he was so surprised he couldn't seize the opportunity to counter. He simply fell, feet out from under him, towards the ground.
