Shadows of the Mind (Private)

"It must be done!"

"Please! There is still time!"

"Get out of my way! He is a monster! A demon! It has been ordered and it must be done for the good of the world!"

"What am I?"

- - - -

Oni's eyes tightened as he exhaled deeply. Shining beads of sweat rolled down his face and off his chin. Small splashes and labored breathing echoed through the room. His sat with his head hung, legs crossed, and his hands laid interwoven in his lap. These visions plagued Oni regularly. There would no be rest for the wicked; tonight this inn will house the demons of a clan's failure.

"Kiela. We won't let them harm our child. He isn't the prophesied one."

"I pray that you are right my love."

Oni's parents held each other as they talked of matters which would scare any parent. Have they birthed evil incarnate? Would they be forced to give up their child whether he was or wasn't? Questions that reduced them both to tears. Just then, a young Oni came running up, "Mommy, Mommy! The other kids called me Oni, what does that mean?" he asked with the most puzzled look.

"That... Is your name. That is the beautiful name we gave you, our beautiful son," she said as she forced a smile. Tears streamed down her face. Both she and her husband, Koroky, were not permitted to name their child, since he was not to live long enough for it to matter. Kiela had managed to protect him up until now, but with every passing day she feared that he would be taken from her.

"Don't cry Mommy. Maybe they'll let me play with them tomorrow." he said with a beaming smile. Oni knew no sadness, since he had never been taught that he deserved better. In order to keep him alive, he had been taught to endure everything with a smile.

"That's right son... There's always tomorrow."

A faint smile stretched across Oni's face as he had finally relaxed. The memories of his parents were the only good part of his childhood. They tried so hard to protect him. The sweat had stopped, and he felt momentary peace. However, he would never find true peace; the Kazura clan made sure of that.

"Hey guys! Whatcha doing?" Oni had found some kids his age after finishing his housework. His parents always offered to play with him after he finished his housework, but he always wanted to play with the other kids. They, however, did not want to play with him.

"Nothing, Oni. Why don't you just go running home again. We don't wanna play with you!" Just then, different kid threw a stone at Oni. Within seconds, they were all doing it. Oni shielded himself with his wings and began to run home. Most kids would cry, but this was all Oni knew. He didn't know that it was something to get upset over.

The next day came quickly. He went for a walk with his mother. Once again, the kids were playing their reindeer games. This time, without Oni even asking to join, the kids began to taunt him from afar and started to throw rocks. One of the rocks flew over Oni and hit his mother in the face, leaving a cut across her cheek. The sight of his mother's injury enraged Oni. As the rocks continued to fly, he started to use his wings to deflect them. A few rocks were launched back at the kids, leaving them with marks as well. Oni's mother grabbed his arm and fled before things got out of hand.

Rage engulfed Oni's mind. His rage at his clan members only appeared after he had fled the village and experienced the world. They called him a demon, but at the time, the rest of them were far closer to demons. The violence and taunting bordered that depicted by imps and the true oni. These hellish children and their corrupted upbringers had forged Oni into the demon he is. He would soon repay their kindness by bringing their true home to this world...
