Seasons (Spikeh)

The many towns and cities tucked in the crevices of the world, uncontrolled by any formal power. Some are friendly. Others, not so much.

Seasons (Spikeh)

”Where is she now? Can you see her?”

Heh... Couldn’t have been easy for him asking her that, relying on her eyes of all things rather than his own ears and senses, but it being Hiro he was asking about, it wasn’t entirely unexpected, there was something between those two.

She’s making her way through the fortress wall towards the front gates now. Akemi finally replied, her Byakugan fixated on the Onoda. ”Can’t you sense her?” this last was added with a teasing tone, to which Zato did not reply, but their was also genuine curiosity in the question. His chakra sensing abilities were strong, much stronger than her own, she’d have expected him to be able to sense Hiro even now though perhaps the combination of Hiro subduing her chakra signature to better move undetected along with her being phased into a solid stone wall were interfering with his senses, or perhaps his feelings were to blame...

Covertly getting up from their brush covered hiding spot atop a nearby hill overlooking both the fortress’s front gate as well as the main road leading to it, Akemi’s Byakugan caught climps of the caravan approaching, wouldn’t be much longer, they’d be at the gate, it was almost time... slithering her way out of the brush and onto clearing just beyond it, she quickly cut a small slit into her thumbwith a kunai and formed a set of seals before giving a look back towards Zato still motionless in the brush

”She’s in place, and the caravan is almost there, it’s time to move”

But Zatoichi didn’t budge, his attention remaining fixed towards the guarded gate where Hiro would come out and attack the men on watch, her phasing abilities allowing her to close in on her targets in a manor than neither Zato or Akemi could have done, she’d be able to get to the guards from a place and direction they wouldn’t be expecting or able to see, she’d cut them down before they’d even realize she was there... It was one hell of an ability.

Finally tiring of waiting for Zato to answer her, Akemi placed her palm down onto the grassy ground before her. ”Zandra” Akemi whispered placing her hand onto the 12 foot tall Hawk summoned standing before her.

The gate guards would lower the fortress’s protective barrier to allow the caravan through, that would be when Hiro would emerge and take out the guards on watch, ensuring that the barrier would stay down thus allowing Akemi and Zato to fly into the fortress grounds, using the night sky as cover. Hiro would then have to reactivate the barrier lest forces within realized something was wrong.

The caravan was nearly to the gate now, the barrier would be coming down any moment... ”Are you coming or am i leaving you behind? Her impatience clear in her tone, she hopped onto Zandra’s back and the Hawk spread its massive wings readying to take flight. Of all the times for Zato to have one of his episodes...

      ”I’m coming.”

...

This storm was getting worse as the night wore on. The dark gray sky ablaze with an impressive show of what seemed like lightning strike after lightning strike. It was a sight to see, and one she would have normally enjoyed were her thoughts not set on other things. Perched as she was wrapped in her cloak crouched hidden among the leaves high up in the trees just at the edge of Sakon village, she hadn’t been in these parts for nearly 25 years now... A quarter of a century... it felt odd to say it, so much time had passed, yet it seemed as if just a few weeks ago.

25 years... and here she was again, for the same reason as last time. The world oblivious to everything that had happened since, carrying on as it did after any passing, heartless indifferent, cold... She however wasn`t so callous about the past, wasn’t as detached. Being here again after ll this time after the same thing as last time brought back a lot of memories she had not recalled in a long time, it brought back to mind names and faces she hadn`t thought about in nearly as long, it all made her feel uncharacteristically nostalgic and wistful.

But again, the world didn’t care about such things and thunder roared above, snapping her back to the present, back to the cold and the wet, in response to which she pulled her cloak in more tightly around herself, but that didn`t help, the rain was beginning to make its way through its fabric so soaked it had become, and the storm only threatened to worsen as the night wore on.

Ordinarily she would have found a place with the village to set up as a base of operations, it would have been more practical since she had no idea how long before her target would reveal him or themselves, how long he or they would remain in the village... actually she wasn’t even sure if she was staking out the right place, it made sense within the context of the rumors she had been hearing back in Fire country, but she had had little to go on. Sakon had attracted her eye for the same reason she hadn’t entered the village yet... a massive barrier.

It was the type that detected presences penetrating it, similar to the one that had surrounded Konoha back in the day and which surrounded the Hyuuga’s home village now, and it enveloped the whole of Sakon. That was rather complex and difficult technique to perform, detecting both solid objects and chakra that past through it. Here in the lands of Rain, she imagined that only a few could perform such a technique, those she was after being among them. So, Sakon had been a good place to start, and here she was hidden beyond is homes and streets for the 3rd night in a row, unwilling to risk penetrating a barrier that might manage to detect her and indentify her as Kunoichi even if she subdued her chakra flow, after all villagers and travellers came and went with little attention from those responsible for the barrier, surely it was meant to detect Shinobi...

Safer to wait beyond it at this point. She sit here, waiting, and watching, they would come out eventually, they’d reveal themselves, and at that point she’d finish something started long ago, after all these years she’d see their mission through...

It seemed like centuries since he had traveled these lands, many of the routes through the landscape had long since left his mind, replaced by more pressing information. However, he was still capable of traversing it, either by uncanny luck or memories slowly seeping back as he walked the familiar roads and forest clearings. He had sensed the storm coming shortly before the heavens began to split with lightning and the heavy downpour, all to the beat of divine thunder, the element was practically a limb of his own and he had taken shelter as soon as he felt it's arrival.

Supaiku had sat patiently within the umbrella of foliage the forest had provide him, sitting on a thick three branch, one leg dangling lazily over the edge while his back braced against the trunk. His contrasting hued eyes of sapphire and emerald watching the area stretching beyond him with no particular interest as a black cigarette slowly burned away in the corner of his mouth. In usual circumstances he would have moved on, cover more ground and head towards a more known destination, yet the village he remembered hazily as Sakon had perked his interest. A large barrier of chakra that would sense every traveler that moved within it's reach was a rare thing after all, shinobi with lesser sensing abilities wouldn't even be aware of it's presence at all, even after entering it. To him, it was as noticeable as the lighting that split the clouds above his head, in no small thanks to the powers he had gained since vanquishing the Yonbi and taking it's place as a bijuu. It had been strange for him at first, it came with powers that few mortals would understand, perhaps even be able to control.

Supaiku had simply fought and survived too much to let such things stand in his way. He was a tenacious little punk like that.

A crisp plume of smoke slowly whispered away from his lips as his mind dwelled on the subject of the barrier itself. It was a powerful technique and he had only ever seen it before in the lands of Fire. Which begged the question how the land of Rain harbored not only the knowledge of the jutsu but also the means and persons to perform it. The village of Sakon obviously wasn't a simple village as he had first mistaken it for. Perhaps it was simply best if he didn't meddle with such things, that had been his first thought. After all, it was of no real importance or urgency to him, despite the surprise of the barrier. Yet he couldn't walk away, something within seemed to force him to at least stay, like he had a part to play in something he wasn't able to quite see or even understand at the moment.

Just when he thought the mental debate within over further investigation was concluded he felt a powerful pulse of chakra. Sakon was still a vast distance from himself, a safety precaution so he could simply observe, but he felt it like it was happening right around him. The unmistakable echo of a roaring explosion howled from the village and shook through the forest, causing unknown damage within the village.

Now Supaiku knew he had to act. For no other reason than this village was calling out to him and the explosion served as the catalyst. His powerful figure slowly arose from his sitting position, hands pulling over the heavy hood of the grey cloak that covered his frame before he simply vanished with a flash of lightning. He had surpassed his brother Dinn's Lightning Leap jutsu, no longer needing tagged kunai to mark his destination, his sensing abilities allowed him to cover an amazing distance almost instantly without coming afoul of any objects that were in his direct path. When he opened his eyes he was just outside the reach of the barrier that had been the start of his current involvement. For a moment his eyes simply examined it beyond the peppering of rain that assaulted his frame, head tilting as if to gain a better understanding of the surprising technique.

"Guess I'm bustin' it. Pain in the ass if I can be tracked." He muttered under his breath, sighing slightly before his lids closed once more. He began to focus, calling forth the almost limitless chakra he now had at his disposal. His whole frame began to glow as bright blue chakra licked from his person as if he was set alight. It didn't have the same presence of his demonic chakra when he still had the beast sealed within, it didn't feel destructive at all. In fact, if anything, it seemed almost passive. That all changed in a moment when his eyes shot open and he struck with one fist where the barrier stood in his way, flooding all of the gathered chakra into his attacking limb. In the blink of an eye the chakra that seemed so peaceful roared with incredible force, like the eye of a storm once again being consumed by the force that would destroy everything in it's path.

The whole barrier became visible as Supaiku's chakra coursed through it, illuminating the barrier's presence with bright sparks that spread like cracking glass. A moment later it all shattered, overloading the sensing barrier and destroying it. No doubt those that created it would now know someone capable of such a feat was heading for the village, but they wouldn't know who and from what direction.

The Hantaa chuckled lightly at the rare opportunity to test his new powers before beginning to move directly towards Sakon.

Even he couldn't fathom the events that would unfold and upon later meditation on how some of his life had played out, perhaps he shouldn't have been so surprised in retrospect.

The first sign of trouble she got was the sudden shift in the sky, among the rain and lightning, chakra began to seep up, intermixing itself into the very clouds, the wind and thunder... She knew the look of this, she had seen it before. Somebody was seizing the storm and making it their own... It lasted only a split second, the sudden shift in the air, the sudden concentration of chakra and suddenly a massive discharge of lightning came crashing with such ferocity as to nearly vaporise a 4 story edifice. Even where she hid beyond the village`s boundaries the very ground shuttered at the strike, then all settled once more, even the storm, the chakra that had invaded it moments ago now spent in that one massive blow.

She could hear panicked screams from the village, the villagers themselves now awakened and in a flurry, came rushing out of their homes to see with their own eyes the crater where the once rather warehouse had stood. She could sense their confusion, their panic and Fear, wondering if their own homes would be next to suffer nature`s wrath.

As it turned out, their fear was justified, but simply was directed at the wrong threat.

What came next she could not foresee, no signs were made evident to her, not even to those eyes of hers, it simply came out of nowhere, wreaking havoc and devastation that eclipsed by far even the destruction lightning had caused moments ago. An entire section of the village seemed to tear itself from very ground in a mass fiery detonation sending a shock wave tearing through much of the rest of the village as well as through the forest where she hid, she felt the tree below her suddenly lurch followed by the explosion`s shockwave smashing into her ripping her off of her footing and sending her careening into a chaos of crashing trees, most of which searing from the heat and flames that followed the shockwave, it was only her sudden and rapid discharge of chakra to protect herself that kept her from absorbing most of the impact of the blast and kept her mostly safe from the heat, her utterly soaked cloak doing the rest.

Moments later, and just as suddenly, the flash had passed, the dust began to settle and Akemi found herself buried under smoking trees, dirt and wet ash, a few meters of it in fact, on top of that her left shoulder was dislocated, she’d see to that soon enough, but first she needed take care of the rubble pinning her down. From the surface, if anyone were watching, they might have noticed a thin bright thread like length of chakra slicing out of the rubble, a moment later a powerful chakra release blasting the cut up rubble away and a young looking woman come leaping out of newly opened fissure in the ground.

She surfaced just in time to witness a powerful chakra overwhelm the detection barrier still surrounding what remained of the village, overtaking it and causing it to collapse. It was familiar somehow that chakra but she couldn’t place it. Regardless the barrier was down, not that it would matter any longer under the circumstances.

Gripping her left shoulder Akemi took a quick look around, her Byakugan revealed the extent of the damage.Half the village was gone, the north and east of it reduced to nothing but a crater, the other half wasn’t in much better shape, with much of it on fire, and large swaths of it just barely standing or even crumbling... there were so many dead, it would prove easier to count the living were she inclined to and these were for the most part in a panic.

She cursed herself for having waited rather than gone in the moment she had arrived, perhaps then she could have prevented this... but what exactly had happened?! Had that lightning strike done that? Had it been an attack? An accident or had the people she was after deliberately caused this to cover their tracks? And what was that chakra that had overpowered the barrier... It would have had to be massive to affect it directly like that.

First things first... Taking in a deep breath, Akemi took aim for her dislocated shoulder and snapped it back into place with a chakra power palm strike of her hand. Grunting at the sudden shot of pain flashing through the half of her body, Akemi tilted over for a moment, a few deep exhales later and she was ready to move. It was time to take a look in the village, and try to help out as best she could with the survivors...

He moved as quickly as always, closing the gap between himself at the village or rather, what was left of it, within little time. Pausing only to take a look-out spot atop another tree. He could see through the dense foliage as if it was invisible, seeing nothing but the sources of chakra and it's residue for miles around. It must've been what it was like to see through the eyes of the Yonbi. He could see the still lingering trails of chakra in the sky that brought down the bolt of lightning as well as the trickling amount within the village.

Causalities had been high. That much was plain to see. Half the village had been destroyed in a heart beat. Just what kind of shinobi were hiding in the village? The even bigger question was, what was their reasoning for doing so much collateral damage? It was either an act of terrorism or a cover up for something else. As far as Supaiku knew Sakon didn't have anything of great importance within or around it and there was no other settlements for miles around to justify it being a diversion. Even then, the thought of it being a random act was even more unlikely, especially by one able to harness the element of lightning to such a high degree.

There were too many factors here, too many questions, not even answers. The blade's usual reaction would have been simply to stand in the middle of the village and wait until those responsible took notice, but with people willing to do so much damage to a village he knew that wouldn't be the best plan of action. So, boring as it was, he would have to play this carefully.

Whoever it was, they were very capable. Easily hiding their own tracks, Supaiku couldn't sense who the chakra residues belong to, nor could he make out any obvious flickers of chakra from the survivors that pointed out trained shinobi. They were using the panic to hide, possibly. Or they weren't there any longer.

The whole situation was like a delicate game of chess.

Supaiku hated chess.

His teeth mulled over his lower lip, chewing as he began to think over other possibilities. The lightning strike itself caused enough damage as a distraction, so why the giant explosion? It was over-kill really and instead of directing all attention to one spot it dragged it to two. It wasn't a text book situation, the only logical thought that came to mind as to how the two disasters could have been connected was that they were by two separate groups.

That thought annoyed Supaiku more than anything else. One would have been easier, more direct. He wasn't used to all this analyzing. He'd probably end up with a headache by the end of all of this.

The Blade was so caught up in thought that he nearly missed it. A small group, four or so in number were escorting another in a direction opposite to all the villagers. Moving towards some sort of storage the village must have used for broken machinery. The one they were escorting was behind carried by two others, his chakra flow disrupted, he was injured, Supaiku could still see the defined flow however, this person was a shinobi, they all were.

Without wasting another second for though, he began to move. The heavy grey fabric of his cloak barely budging with Supaiku's movements as he descended upon the village, taking care to mute his chakra so those he hunted wouldn't detect him.

He needed answers and he was more than certain that if he monitored those shinobi he would find some.

If not, there was always a healthy does of torture to get what he needed.

The dead were everywhere, littered among the rubbled homes and on the streets, the carnage indescribable, bodies both intact and torn apart, severed limbs, flesh and bone. The smell of blood and gore drowned out only by that of smoke and dust, so thick that even the heavy rains had yet to wash it all away.

Upon entering the village Akemi had split herself into a dozen shadow clones, half of them helping with the local’s makeshift rescue efforts anyway she could, whether using her eyes helping to locate the living trapped under debris, or using her field medics training to treat the wounded. Another portion of her clones focused on the fires, working to seal them or douse them anyway they could.

The real Akemi for her part had made her way to the center of the massive crater that now swallowed up half of the town, to think that so many had died all in the flash of a moment. So many lives extinguished... So many buried and crushed... She could feel weight of them pressing up her here, their energies permeating the very soil and air. Just over ten thousand had called this village home, now she doubted that a third of that remained.

Turning her eyes back towards what still stood of the village for a moment, the sounds of sirens and screams barely audible where she stood, drowned out by the rains. There were strong presences in the village, shinobi other than herself, she could sense them, sense their stronger and more even flowing chakras, including that one chakra, the one that felt familiar somehow, familiar yet strange and undefined, were any of they behind this? Were any of they a part of this?

First things first, she had come out here to find out what had happened, there was no way that lightning strike could have done all this despite its power, no way it could have caused this level of destruction and taken out such a large chunk of the town, not to mention that there had been several seconds between the strike and the massive blast that had caused this crater, as if a second explosion, separate and caused by something else.

So then, what had happened?

Penetrating through the dust and smoke, past the dead and the rubble, her Byakugan searched, probing into the depths, through layer after layer, until... Her eyes widened as she noticed the first one, then the next, and the next again, and one after another, so many of them.

Pillars, hundreds of them, in a wide area deep below the rubble, and there was more, at that depth the rubble was different, of different material, there was charred wood down there, metal, buried under soil and concrete, She could see it. That had been a chamber, some 20 meters or so below ground, a massive one, nearly as large as the crater above it itself, a hidden facility? Perhaps a storage facility or warehouse of some kind. By the patter of destructions among the pillars as she studied it more and more, noticing patterns and similitudes, to her eyes it seemed as if this had been a controlled detonation from within the facility, as if it had...

Anger flashed in her eyes... This, all of this, it had been deliberate.

Something caught her eye to the north, collapsed as it may be it seemed to be a tunnel, one that led away from the village. With her Byakugan she followed it along till finally reaching a length of it that hadn’t collapsed, it was nearly a kilometer away, some distance out of town.

Snapping into action Akemi sliced a little cut into her thumb with a Kunai holstered to her right thigh before forming a quick set of seals and placing her palm onto the ground summoning a massive Hawk before her. Leaping onto the creatures back, she adjusted her cloak and conical hat as it took off. Her hawks didn’t particularly like flying in heavy rain, but it wasn’t like they’d get any better weather by waiting in these lands. A few screeches, spoken directions in the tongue of her Hawks and they were off following the tunnel in search of where it led.

With her chakra split evenly among herself and a dozen clones, she wasn’t exactly going in at full strength if she had to face any opposition or hostiles, but she wasn’t willing to dispel her clones yet, their efforts were saving lives.

following the tunnel for about 12 miles before it finally surfaced into a canyon where she had her Hawk Masarna touch down before hopping off and taking a look around. The opening to the tunnel itself was blocked by a huge boulder placed before it, beyond that she could find nothing of worth no matter how hard she tried. No foot prints, no trail, nothing to track, no sign that anyone had been through here any time recently except for the faintest of chakra traces and even that was barely detectable, the only proof someone had been through here, but definitely not strong enough to follow or track. Frustrating as it was to say, these guys were very good, but then if she was right as to their identities, then they would be.

Something caught her eye suddenly as she was about to hop back onto Masarna’s back, a slight momentary gleam of chakra, coming from the boulder blocking the passage’s entrance. There it was again, a spike of chakra, then another. Turning to face the massive boulder standing some 20 feet from it, those sudden spikes of chakra burst into fullness, from a central spot, a seal revealing itself on its surface, , the boulder beginning to shift and rumble, Masarna screeched at the sight of it as the boulder reshaped itself into a massive 12 foot tall golem of stone.

A trap, left behind to activate if any ever approached to investigate. Made of stone rather than more common soil meant that this golem would be tougher and stronger than most, but that meant little to her, as the massive creature took its first step towards her with its fist raised to strike, Akemi, in the blink of an eye was in the air in a charge of her own, her palm connecting with the core of the creatures body, releasing a mass pulse of chakra that tore through it shattering the thing’s torso and gut, leaving the head and arms to fall to the ground, its legs alone standing where they had been as if the remains of an ancient statue. Just like that the chakra permeating the stones faded, and the golem jutsu was undone.

Well then, this trail was a dead end, leaving her with little more to go on. A scan of the surrounding area with her Byakugan found no one within miles of where she stood, she had little to go on from here, and few other paths open to her other than returning to the village and searching out the Shinobi she had sensed in and around it, one of them might be connected to this, one of them might have answers.

A quick hop back atop Masarna, ”forgive me, i know this kind of weather can be rough to fly through, but just a bit more... Lets head back to the village.”
