⎣ History | Legend ⎤
Nature - The strongest force the world has ever known...and ever will...
Time - An unstoppable force; indifferent and unyielding...
When these two entities combine, the world itself can be crafted anew. When these entities combine, they form the Megami. With time, nature can destroy all that is created. Mountains erode, empires crumble, and life grows...ages...die. This is the legend once taught among the Megami, but even they could not last against time, and so they took to nature to protect themselves.
It was once said among the members of the Megami, during a time in which the clan thrived from the land and their own fruits, that the strength behind the clan had been granted by divine intervention. Whereas much of the rest of the world believed the deity Inari, the Kami of fertility and agriculture, was male in nature, the Megami knew the truth. To the Megami, Inari is the quintessential Mother Earth. It is from the goddess, the queen of things that grow, that the Megami take not only their abilities, but also their name itself, for Megami literally means 'Goddess'. The goddess Inari had granted her followers control over nature, and her blessed light would shine with them forever, or so they had thought.
Nestled within the Land of Grass, Kusa no Kuni, once renowned for its lush environment of floral and fauna, the Megami settled. They had lived as one with the land, never building houses by chopping down the forests. Instead, they used their clan skills to grow homes within the treetops and forest floors, becoming synonymous with nature. It was during these days, in the centuries of old, that the Megami began to enhance their abilities. The gardens within which they planted their roots ranged the distances of forests, filled with plant life unseen anywhere else within the world, life that would never again appear so multiple save for these olden days.
As the Megami grew, their experiments did as well. Using the force of nature they developed better flora, and more deadly poisons. The Megami began to perform volatile experiments in the name of Inari. Even as they lived in isolation, they grew to despise the outside world, which they saw as savage and destructive to the natural order. These powerful, though be it twisted, thoughts would lead to their own destruction. Through their experimentations, which at their highest and most classified levels had been aimed at the mass destruction of the outside world, the Megami unleahsed a plague upon themselves that began to destroy their blessed clan and all they had created. It was a viral disease, shown by signs of flu-like symptoms combined with black veins showing on their greenish pail skin.
Their medics yielded no salvation from these affliction, nor even had time to respond. It was only short time after infection that all infected would die, and the infection was the totality of the clan. Every member of the Megami had been summoned back to their main village. Even without it, the explosion that had erupted from the Great Tree when infection started to spread crossed, unnoticed to all by the Megami, the entire globe, only infecting those who Inari herself had touched. The Plague, as it would come to be called among the survivors, had only ones means of escape. In the chaos that came with it, a small fraction of the clan took to nature and time to protect themselves.
Thus began the hibernation of the clan, or at least what was left of it. Only a handful of survivors made it to what safety they could find. They took to their plants, and withdrew into the bosom of nature. The surviving Megami were absorbed into mutated plants crafted into sleeper pods to outlast the Plague in slumber, waiting for the day they could blossom again.
This Megami survived by retreating into specially designed sleeper pods. They were meant to only sleep for a few decades at most, long enough for the Plague to run its course and disperse into history. However, something went wrong, and the pods never unlatched themselves, and the Megami could not awake. As retribution for their sins, the Megami would suffer even in hiding. During the time of sleep, it was like an everlasting dream, though for most it quickly turned to a guilt-ridden nightmare. The mind is not meant to be kept dreaming for that long, and many would fall victim to mental disparities even as their bodies lay motionless and unchanged.
The Great Sleep lasted for nearly two centuries before the first of the pods awoke, revealing a girl into this world, Akiko. She was one of few who had, by the work of her mother, been inoculated with an experimental Cure prior to her sleep. Not only that, but it was by product of her father that the pods themselves were created. The inoculation she received had left Akiko capable of using her Kekkei Genkai. However, she was not strong enough awaken her sisters and brothers. Alone and desperate, she set out into the world, traveling to Sunagakure to make herself stronger. Not only would learning to grow plants within the desert increase her skills and endurance, but she had much to learn of this new world. In the time since she began her sleep, the Village Hidden in the Sand had learned new, at least to the Megami, aptitude for medical techniques.
As she grew stronger, Akiko increased her knowledge as well. In search for a solution, she studied plants, and when she became desperate, she studied other forms of life. At her darkest, she took to dissecting humans for her experiments. After increasing her strength and abilities, she returned to the birthplace of her clan. Using her knowledge, she was able to awaken only a select few, only those that had also been inoculated like her. However, by chance, Akiko would cross path with those she labeled as The Watchers, a pair of sisters that showed retention of the Kekkei Genkai even without the inoculation.
For the others, Akiko placed specialized buds onto the sleeper pods. With luck, the Megami would awaken naturally overtime. Unfortunately, her efforts did not yield the results she had hoped. Only one more had been awoken, and without the powers of Mokuton. It was a time of great stress for Akiko. Not only was she failing at every pass to bring about a revival of her clan, but her adopted country was in great turmoil.
Even more desperate now, Akiko departed on a journey of discovery to loop the world and search for a cure within the plant species that covered it. Since the Land of Water had been completely devastated by natural disaster, she started there to search out life strong enough to survive the scourge that crossed the land. Baring no fruit, the Land of Fire was where she headed towards next in all its diversity of plant life. Whether it was fate, or something stronger, she would cross paths with someone who would be as responsible for the clans survival as herself in time. It was more then just an intersection, for the two paths would join. A man called Dokutoru, doctor, with inborn abilities on par with her own, would complete the formula by giving to the Megami what they had lost, time.
With Dokutoru's help and companionship, the pair collected the components that would make the Cure, transcending the stream of time to bring back new hope for a clan thought to be lost within it. The Megami were awoken at last, the vast majority capable again of using their Kekkei Genkai in all its power. With it, there was great danger, for many dark things were possible from them. All that was left was the hope that a great lesson had been learned from the trials they had passed.
⎣ Kekkei Genkai | Bloodline ⎤
Atae no Inari [ Gift of the Fertility Goddess ]
This is the principal aspect of the Megami bloodline. Essentially, the Megami are defined as hybrids between plants and animals. The members of this clan are highly attuned with the Mokuton [ Plant-life Release ] chakra. It is necessary to note the definition of this as 'plant life' rather then wood, as the Megami do not specialize in the production of true wood techniques. Instead, the Megami primarily utilize non-wood based plant-life, opening up a variety of unique techniques that only a clansmen possessing the Atae no Inari can perform. Whereas wood users are able to product sturdy structures of bark, the Megami traditionally utilize more malleable plant life. This affinity with Mokuton allows for them to create minor, regular plants almost naturally, making them excellent gardeners. However, in a greater sense, the Megami utilize their ability to create plants, particularly rare kinds of pollinating plants and herbs to produce deadly poisons from natural substances. The intellectual pursuits of the Megami are embodied in their abilities to create rare herbs and other ingredients, as they make excellent botanist and chemists.
Ki no Itonami [ Tree of the Life ]
Like several other clans with Bloodline Limits, the Megami exert physical differences that not only allow them to be identified as unique, but also gives to the clansmen abilities not seen in other shinobi. The main aspect of the physical modifications the Megami express is known to the clan as the Tree of Life. Within the clan's legend, this is the blessing given to them by the goddess Inari.
To put it simply, the Megami clansmen have genetic qualities of both plants on animals, making their bodies something of a hybrid in between the two. The skin of the Megami has to it a unique pigmentation that makes their complexion a greenish white. These green pigments in their skin are capable of performing metabolic procession in order to convert light energy into chemical energy, a process known as photosynthesis. Megami clansmen, or at least those that maintained their Kenkei Genkai after surviving the Great Plague, are capable of performing photosynthesis in order to sustain life. By absorbing the electromagnetic radiation of light energy through their skin and combining it with the carbon dioxide taken from the air along with the water, the members of the Megami produce oxygen and energy containing carbohydrates in the form of different sugars. Because the Megami perform photosynthesis, their blood is genetically designed with a type of reverse hemoglobin that transports carbon dioxide along with oxygen, since they still do perform normal cellular respiration along with their plant-like photosynthesis. Essentially, the Megami's unique style of respiration is self-perpetuating, for they produce both oxygen and carbon dioxide, while using both oxygen and carbon dioxide as initial substrates to their varying forms of respiration. Through the chloroplast built into their skin do possess the essential plant organs for absorbing the carbon dioxide through the air, the duel action hemoglobin within the Megami bloodstream compromises between the mammal and vegetative qualities of their bodies, and thusly the actual photosynthesis that they perform is an advanced form that has integrated into the normal human organs so that the Megami maintain both types of cellular process, cellular respiration and photosynthesis.
While it is true that the photosynthetic nature of the clan does permit them to survive without normal forms of nutrition, the Megami clansmen becomes more stationary if they rely purely on an autotrophic existence. They will essentially have to take "root", and though no actually roots grow out of their feet, they will eventually be reduced down to only producing enough energy to sustain existence beyond where others would face starvation. As long as they continually have water, carbon dioxide, and sunlight available to them they will be living, but if an entire month goes by in which they do not consume food like normal, they will not be able to move whatsoever, not having enough energy to give motion to their mammal muscles. It was this ability, primarily, that had allowed the Megami to survive for centuries in their sleeper pods. As their abilities faded, through, several of the resting died from having made a complete separation from their Kekkei Genkai, thus killing them from lack of nutrients. However, what this does mean is that any Megami that did come out of hibernation have some trace of their Bloodline still within them, even if they cannot manipulate Mokuton following the Awakening.
The ability to perform photosynthesis also allows the Megami to survive longer on a held breath through the combination of aquatic photosynthesis combined with feeding off the oxygen they draw out of the water around them. However, this does not permit for an unlimited duration of underwater existence. On average, this gives the Megami about 30 minutes before they drown like a normal human.
Photosynthesis is not the only characteristic of the Tree of Life abilities. Being genetically both animal and plant, the Megami are granted longer lifespans then normal humans. The average lifespan of the Megami is roughly 250 years in length. However, with this long life, they are also granted greater youth. Though a member of the clan ages like normal during their child years, for most of the plantlike qualities of the clan do not emerge until adolescence, from the point of puberty they begin to age at a slower rate. Initially the extension of the aging process on their body starts slowly, and through their teen years they will reflect their actual age. However, by the time they are 30, they will appear as though they are 20. By 50 they will look to be 25, and by 100 they will just be reaching 35. By the time they are 200, the clansman will have passed "over the hill" and will appear to be around 70 years of age. This ability to age slower along with the "unnaturally" long life is yet another reason why the Megami refer to themselves as the children of Inari, the offspring of Mother Earth.
Idenshigan [ Genetic Eye ]
The Idenshigan [Genetic Eye] is a doujutsu exclusive to the Megami clan. In appearance it turns the eyes to a dark shade of purple featuring a three tomoe design connected into a triangular shape. When actively in use, this black design will rapidly spin in the user's iris, and only when active can the Megami access the genetic maps they have stored in their minds.
The Idenshigan is the force that allows for the Megami to craft rare and powerful plants. This doujutsu permits its user to view the genetic makeup of all organic life. With this ability the Megami can literally map out the molecular structure that makes up organisms. This allows the Megami to decipher the genetic information that can be gained through either direct contact with the organic life, or by transmitting the genetic information gathered through specialized Mokuton receptor spores. Without actually receiving these samples, the Idenshigan possesses little power. However, with such genetic sampling, the Megami can mentally map out the DNA of life forms permitting for the understanding and experimentation at the genetic level. By understanding the genetic code and the sequence of nucleotides within genes, the Megami can perfect their work with plants, and their own abilities in general. While the genetic mapping abilities of the Idenshigan formulates the genetic code of organic DNA, there is a limitation to the number of genetic maps the Megami can carry with them at any given time. At a Genin leve, only 5 genetic maps can be kept within the mind of the Megami. At Chuunin, this increase to 10, and at Jounin, 15. Finally, an S-rank user of the Idenshigan can carry with them 25 genetic maps. In the cases where the genetic map limiation has reached its limit, the oldest of genetic maps are instantly forgotten, and thus preventing the user of this information in formulating new plants.
By utilizing the genetic maps they carry with their Idenshigan, the members of the Megami can manipulate their Mokuton abilities at a genetic level in order to create genetically superior life forms at the cost of chakra. These creatures usually come off as being types of "mutant" plants, which combine the genetic information from multiple species of plants and other life forms to create unique and deadly information. As an example of how this ability can be used, if a Megami has access to both roses and sunflowers, then it would be possible for them to genetically map a new species of sunflower that features rose thrones along with its stem. While this is only a simple example, and it is unlikely for such a plant life to be useful, it serves to show how the combination of DNA from multiple life forms can be made to improve simplistic plant life. At Genin level, the members of the clan can only combine the genetic codes of plants, and so they may very well be restricted to producing throned sunflowers. However, at Chuunin level the members of the clan can grow into their plants limited animalistic qualities, such as hardening the exterior of vine plants with a vegetative formation to imitate reptilian scales. However, the most advanced forms of life cannot be utilized prior to the rank of Jounin, which includes human forms of life in limited capacity.
Nijurasen Idenshigan [ Double Helix Genetic Eye ]
This is a more advanced form of the Idenshigan that never existed in the old clan, save for in the old Elder. However, even than, its existence was unknown to the others of the clan save for those special operatives under his command. When activated, the typical black design on purple purples expands to form three triangular shapes that are overlaid with a toxic hazard sign. This will turn the eye mostly black. In relation to the original doujutsu, the greatest advantage of the Nijurasen Idenshigan is that it allows the wielder to read the genetic code of any organic life that the user lays eyes on. Typical, the only way for a Megami to read a genetic code is first to extract a physical sample by coming in contact with the specimen. Furthermore, the use of a normal Idenshigan blots out the normal vision of the user, whereas this more advanced form does not share the same weakness.
It is important to note that the Nijurasen Idenshigan, however, does not remove the necessity to collect a physical sample in order to store the genetic code in the memory slots of the mind. Without obtaining a sample, the user still cannot manipulate any portion of the code. Instead, the advanced doujutsu can merely help the user to pick and choose which specimens they wish to obtain a sample from by allowing them advanced knowledge of what genetic information they can obtain. This is a particularly useful device is it would be otherwise difficult to obtain a direct sample, as the user may elect that the juice of the fruit is not worth the squeeze. More importantly, if a sample is obtain and stored in the user's memory slots, the fact that the eyes do not blind the user's normal vision can help to develop genetic solutions while in active engagement. However, manipulating the genetic information in their mind will still take concentration, and can distract even a visually capable Megami.
The Nijurasen Idenshigan does not come without costs. As would be expected, use of the eyes consume much greater amounts of chakra than does the normal Idenshigan. Furthermore, as with many Doujutsu, overuse of the eyes puts a great amount of strain on the eyes that can eventually lead to blindness. However, the Nijurasen Idenshigan has a weakness all its own. Besides the strain on the eyes, the technique when overused puts enormous pressure on the user's mental memory slots. What this will do is wear away at the TATA box, a long string of Thymine and Adenine at the ends of a person's DNA. The repetition of these two nucleobases in the nucleic acid of DNA create a buffer zone during replication of the genetic code. When worn away, the result is such mental disorders as senility and Alzheimer's. Thus, the user can be made victim of mental disorder from attempting to overuse this power. However, even before the early onset of mental disorder, the advanced Doujutsu puts the unique memory compartments of the Megami at risk. The mental strain will eventually make it impossible for user to access the memory slots in their mind except through use of the Nijurasen Idenshigan. Essentially, the user's normal Doujutsu is put at risk through this more advanced form, which will only exacerbate the continuance towards the more severe mental illnesses in order to achieve even the basic results a clansman could with their normal eyes.
Ki no Chishiki [ Tree of the Knowledge ]
This is a special ability of the Megami clan that is granted through their ability to understand the genetic code of living organisms and replicate modified DNA. The first aspect of the Ki no Chishiki is that it allows the Megami clansmen to modify aspects of their own body in order to respond to several situations. For instance, by understanding the genetic makeup of poisons along with their own genetic code, the Megami clansmen can produce genetically engineered antibodies to provide them with some immunity towards the poison itself. This action of developing immunity takes up two slots of the genetic maps, one for the poison itself, which must be composed of natural ingredients like most poisons are, and then another for the Megami clansmen DNA signature. However, in the case where the poison has not been created naturally, such as an advanced level Dokton technique, the Megami cannot so easily defend against it.
The Ki no Chinshiki also allows the Megami to gather information on their opponent through the use of specialized receptor spores created through Mokuton manipulation. These receptor spores are produced in a dust-like cloud that, when inhaled by the target, integrate into the opponents bloodstream and spread throughout the entire body of the target. The effects of these spores cannot be felt except by someone with an extraordinary method of understanding their body. When these receptor spores are within the target, they enhance the level of genetic understanding for the Megami and transmit back to the Idenshigan information they gather on the opponent. This information varies depending on the target, but as a cursory level the Megami will be able to understand such things as the chakra nature of their target, physical characteristics, along with conditions that can change within the target over time, such as blood sugar levels, body fat percentage, and other information that could prove extremely useful when undergoing a case study of the target such as for a medical report. With this feature, the Megami can specifically design cures for individuals from individual cases so long as they can find the required genetic maps to construct a cure that is needed. However, this example of cure design is limited to Megami clansmen that possess the Medical Arts speciality, and have had sufficient training and experimentation.
The final ability of the Ki no Chinshiki is that it allows them to branch out their bloodline limit into that of other similar bloodlines, specifically other Mokuton clans that may specialize in the actual use of wood, whereas the Megami do not. In conjunction with the use of the special receptor spores in order to enhance their genetic understanding of the target, who would be a different Mokuton user, the Megami would be able to understand the DNA of the other bloodline enough to bridge that gap with their own simlar genetic signature, thus permitting them to learn from other Mokuton clans as though they were learning from a non-clan specific move. In order to do this, the Megami must use five of their genetic maps slots, which would be directed towards understanding the map of the trainer, and their own genetic map in a 3 to 2 ratio. These maps undergo a mental lock following the performance of this move which last for a full 24 hour [IC] period as this new knowledge integrates into their minds. This limits the amount of training the Megami can undergo in this process. However, this ability is refined enough that it allows for the Megami to learn true-wood style techniques, though finding a qualified teacher that is ready and willing is a greater challenge than they might like.
Yuuki Kugutsu [ Organic Puppetry ]
Since this clan is based around an advanced chakra element, the members of the Megami cannot create complex mobile plant life at a Genin level that shoot out and and attack in the same manner as several other elemental styles of Ninjutsu. Thusly, the Megami have developed a specialized type of puppetry to use in connection to their plants. Using Mokuton chakra to create various plants, the Megami can utilize specialized chakra strings through the roots of their creations and along the length of the plants to be able to give a type of control life and motion to the plants similar to how a puppet master manipulates their puppets. However, a great downside to this is that being a plant, these creations are limited in range, for they cannot uproot themselves from the ground.
⎣ Clan Information ⎤
- Clan Training :: One of the key principals of training for Megami members is to connect themselves with nature. Without being assimilated into the world like a plant is, the Kekkei Genkai can never be accessed by even the most skilled members of the clan, and it is even possible to loose the abilities of the clan if the member ever becomes truly disconnected with nature. To fulfill this training, members of the clan are usually required to stay within the plant filled places of the world without food or shelter. They will live for a time entirely off of photosynthesis, and will be protected only by the forest around them. Furthermore, while not a requirement, most members of the clan undertake training in traditional forms of puppetry. At a base level, they will at least learn to form Mokuton laced chakra strings for Organic Puppetry, even if those can only manipulate plants.
- Population :: Class D [50-100]
The Megami were once fin full abundance. However, the Great Plague ravaged their numbers. The disease killed the majority of the clan more than two centuries ago, and several more would die from the complications with the sleeper pods. The clan now has a very low population, though with room for growth. The oldest members that be awoken are only about 100 years, which gives them the appearance of a 35 year old. However, these are not the staple of the clan. For one, there were fewer of the elderly to survive, and those that did outlast the Great Sleep were the hardest hit as far as retaining their Kekkei Genkai. Of the elder members of the clan, many now have to work back towards attaining Mokuton by starting with its component elements.
The clan is a lot younger now. Those members of the clan that had not yet experienced puberty will probably be the strongest of the clan one day, as they were least affected by the Plague. Even the younger members that had already begun to unlock their Bloodline Limit have been abilities and full access to the clans secret abilities. Those who have stronger Kekkei Genkai also have more distinguishing features as far as the physically unique traits of the body.
To start, the Megami have green skin, as their flesh is laced with chloroform. Members without full retention may have paler looking skin, almost sickly, though this will change over time as they grow stronger. The Megami also usually possess hazel-colored eyes, though there is plenty variation in this as well. One thing that is usually very distinct to the individual members is the color of their hair. In this, there are as many colors as there are colors of flowers, and the hair color is usually very bright and vibrant. Many Megami are named for whatever color they show at birth, normally having their names picked after the flowers of plants with similar colors.
Another trait that was not originally a part of the Megami is the byproduct of the two century long sleep. The mind cannot last that long without some damage. During the time in the pods, the Megami were in a perpetual dream, leading many to have some form of psychological trauma to various degrees.
- Nature//Values :: At current the Megami clan is considered both neutral and obscure. The second awakening of the clan lead to the surviving Megami to need to adjust to how the world had changed since the time of them going into hibernation. While even before their sleep they kept themselves isolated, the world has changed greatly since the dark times of the plague, and until they fully adjust to the environment, they cannot dictate being either good or evil. Using their abilites to genetically modify plant life, the Megami make for excellent Botanist and Chemist. By using their ability to replicate and produce rare plants, the Megami can potentially assist in the creation of new deadly poisons or even cures. However, it should be noted that their passion is with gardening, and during the time of their prime they had gardens that would range the distance of forests.
Considering the new technological movements in the world, which have also led to greater manufacturing and pollution, some of the Megami that venture out of their traditional village will still hold the same spiteful nature towards normal humans that had been instilled in them from a young age. Akiko is attempting to reeducate the members of the Megami on the true history of the clan, though some simply will not listen.
⎣ Additional Information ⎤
- Clan Founder :: The true founding member of the clan is unknown. However, learning the identity has never been a major concern to any Megami, as they accept the lore of the clan. This is a religious belief embedded into the clansmen that holds Inari as the founder of the clan. It is for this reason that the Megami have taken their name, which literally means "Goddess". The Megami consider Inari to be the mother goddess.
- Clan Political Structure :: Given their diminished numbers and strength, the old political structure was lost. This, however, is a good thing considering the malevolent nature of the old elders. Now the Megami live in something more like a social commune. It is currently very utilitarian, a natural existance in simple huts. Their clothing and food are all drawn out of the land. The leader of the clan, however, is Akiko. She was the first Megami to awake from the Great Sleep, and was directly responsible for waking up the rest of the clan.
- Important Members
- Akiko is the leader of the clan. She was the first to awaken, and is responsible for all other clansmen being brought back into this world. After coming out of the Great Sleep, Akiko became a shinobi of Sunagakure. Though the desert country has seen great political change, she still holds a duel loyalty split between her clan and the Land of Wind. Since waking up, she has tired endlessly to find the Cure that would bring about the rebirth of her clan, and has grown greatly as an individual in the process. Akiko is the daughter Akako and Komugi. Her father, Komugi, is the genius behind the sleeper pods that kept the few members of the clan that survived alive. However, he conspired with is wife, Akako, to unleash the Plague harvested from the twins. Most members of the clan will probably never accept that this was an inevitable outcome, as the disease was soon to transmit itself. This is not to say their intentions were purely good, as they also wanted to ensure that all the elders and loyalist were destroyed in the outbreak.
Airisu & Yuriko
- Airisu and Yuriko are a set of twins that were some of the only Megami to be awoken without the Cure. They have a special symbiotic relationship and produce a set of enzymes that keep them healthy so long as they remain close to one another. Though not known to all clansmen, these sister are actually the source of the Plague that ravaged the Megami. Between them and their brother, Kokugi, they had been born with the genetic disease, and to this day are the only Megami that retain the sickness, which only comes out in times of stress or separation. However, all the other clansmen are immune to the Plague now thanks to Akiko.
