Shinji Onigami - Officer Exam

[ \Sakura Hiroba | Kamiza | Yomi/ ]
The capital city of Raikou no Kuni, nestled between mountain peaks in the center of the country. Its altitude and location lead to common snowfall, though it is not necessarily cold throughout the year, clear days often leading to be as warm as summer. At the southern end of this star-shaped city lies a great stone bridge spanning a large lake, connecting to the road back down to the rest of the world. The home of both the Daimyo and Kamiza, the Onigami Compounds.

Scenario
Upon arriving at the Station, Shinji has been informed that instead of his regularly scheduled ass-whooping session he will be tasked with covering for the girlfriend of the exam proctor. The secretary has come down with a nasty case of hangover, it appears. How will he fare in such an unfamiliar environment, fighting endless legions of boredom!?

Minimum one page, beyond that however long it takes for you to finish whatever interesting thing you come up with!

Shinji moved into the precinct through the front door. The others nodded toward him, and he returned the gesture. Plastered across his face was a dorky grin, showing his excitement over the whole affair. All around him were true members of law enforcement in Kumogakure. This was his test. Could he be a part of them? This was as good of an opportunity as ever to see. Moving to the front desk, he retrieved a clipboard with his name on it. Nice. Official documents. He read them, fully expecting to find a task that tested his complete physical and mental ability, something so difficult that it would end up breaking him down from his very first day! Instead, he saw he had a secretary’s job.

That was fine. He could make it work. Excitement was not deterred.

Dun, dun...

Grabbing the clipboard and holding it close to his chest like official government laminates, he skulked through the hallways on his tiptoes. Everyone else around him looked at him like he was crazy, but that didn’t matter. They just didn’t understand. This was police business he had to attend to. He was a master assistant, unhinged by no obstacle.

Shinji lowered his voice, talking to himself; not soft enough to be a whisper, but not loud enough to be anything but a hum.
In the criminal justice system, textually-based commitments are considered especially tedious. In the Lightning Country, the dedicated Onigami boy who replaces absent secretaries is trying to become an officer of an elite squad known as the Kumogakure Police Force. This is his story.

He was near. Yes, near his target location. His creepy gaze shifted across all angles, observing the certificates hanging on the frames on the walls and the adjacent rooms from just outside of the secretary building. In order for his mission to be a success, he had to make sure that he was unseen. Not only was he a secretary’s replacement, but in his mind, he was an undercover secretary’s replacement. He reacted nervously as he watched the people around him, his enjoyment making the smirk grow wider.

With the knob turned and the door quickly opened, he slipped in, immediately closing it behind him.

Successful and daunting, the future officer makes his way into the compound.

Shinji was in. He moved the coat from his shoulders and placed it on the hanger to the left of him near the door, transferring the documents to each hand as he freed his arms. Now the real mission began. Slinging back his arms, he tossed the stapled documents on top of the desk in the center of the room. Running, his hand planted on the ground, with his body curving from within the air and becoming propelled; near the desk, his palm became placed on the end of it as he pushed backwards, giving him more inertia until his haunches landed in the leather rotary seat. Success. The dangers he faced were no more, bypassed with his quick thinking and trained reflexes!

After infiltrating the room, our hero noticed many deadly traps, which he promptly avoided with his impressive acrobatics. What awaits him—”

The phone rang, the sound from it startling him. He looked at the device, noticing that a button connected to his line was flashing. Picking up the phone, he pressed it.

Shinji Onigami, KPF replacement secretary. How may you be helped?

Yeah, is this Chubby’s Electronics Repair?

Well...no, I just—”

“—Because my printer is doing some weird stuff and I was hoping you could help me.

Uh, well, let’s see. What seems to be the pro—”

“—It just froze up on me in the middle of processing these documents.

The most common problem is that the ink cartridges become misaligned. That or a paper jam. Check for a clog and adjust those.

Sure, let me try that.

Shinji waited on the man. Holding the phone up to his ear, he started nibbling at the cuticles in his fingertips on the opposite hand.

Around three minutes must have passed before he spoke again.

Yeah, I think that made it work. Thanks.

Sure, no problem.” Click. The civilian finished with his wisdom.

Amber eyes surveyed the surroundings. He noticed papers strewn around, with many machines used for sending messages and making photocopies.

Oh, this would be fun.

When he got done helping out a citizen in need, the Onigami boy surveyed the stack of government cables before him. Kumogakure’s secrets, a mere touch away. He could conceal them to maintain status quo... or reveal them and wreak havoc. The power to influence the nations in his hands.

As he looked over those that lay before him, obviously there wasn’t anything there that could even have an effect on this nation, much less all of them. The boy’s mind began to wander until he noticed a pen on the desk. It was a mighty fine-looking pen, embroidered with some gold-plated metal. His hand trembled; fingers pulsated as the tension between him and the inanimate object mounted. Peeling his eyes open as wide as they’d go, he allowed himself to gasp.

Then he reached forth, grabbing the pen and holding it up high.

The pen that seals fates, like a wand that may cast a spell, now his to use as a sword or as a shield. An object of unfathomable power! The boy became an incumbent in this chain of power. The strokes made from his quill gave him an authoritative complex, making him able to allow or deny with the ascendancy of daimyō and kings. A flood of realization came over him at the importance of the situation, the sheer volume that his actions have led him to! The first ink stroke...

He started writing down on the papers as he’d been instructed by his superiors to do. He followed orders competently, breezing through the fields like they were obstacles easily overcome. The papers themselves were easy to fill out, just tedious. This process was made better when one used their imagination. Though that trait was one lacking in many people these days as they toil away in their offices, getting so wrapped up in job ethics and trying to bolster their positions. All while being miserable.

The intercom clicked on. He became notified with a sound, then through the speaker someone talked. The writing stopped and he listened.

About time for the Chief’s tea, ah... Mr. Shinji. He prefers it brewed medium-light.

Then he pressed the button near it to respond. “I’ll get right on that.

Shinji rose from his seat, kicking off from it and allowing it to roll against the wall. His hand planted once again on the desk, vaulting him over and near the door. Reaching, his hand wrapped around the knob and turned it, sliding it open ever so gently. His gaze peered out, making sure no one was around. Slithering through the opening, his slim form commenced back to tiptoeing. “Avoiding the traps a second time, our hero makes his way to retrieve a potion in order to rescue the High Chief.

With his grin returning, he made his way to the wreck room. Which way? Northeast? Likely not. He didn’t know, so he peeled open each respective door near his office until he could find it, finally sliding through. It had various instruments used for storing and preparing food, as well as a kettle. Picking it up, he filled it with water under the faucet, then set the metal pot on the surface of the stove. “Now reaching the very thing that stood between him and the potion, he tried to remember the secret. What could it have been?” Light? Medium-light? Medium? ...Strong? Oh yeah, it was medium-light. He put the kettle on to boil, waiting, holding off on adding the tea.

Shinji had to kill time while the kettle reached a high temperature. Moving toward the refrigerator, he grabbed an onigiri ball and quickly consumed it. It was surprisingly good, making him temporarily break the fictional character he had created to sustain his mind from going insane from boredom. Someone was there with him, though he had managed to thoroughly disregard them. How rude. Too bad they were already out the door. Sorry about that, he pleaded; as if anyone could read his thoughts.

When the kettle was sufficiently hot, it began to steam and whistle. With an ovenmitt nearby, he placed it on his hand to grab its handle, then poured the water in a cup. Reaching for a colorful nearby box, he retrieved one of its bags and placed it back down. Slowly the tea bag became dipped into scalding water.

Why do I always expect it to scream?” he mused to himself, before guiding the cup from the room and into the Chief’s office.

With gratitude expressed from his superior and that much more of the job complete, he returned back to the room to get more work done.

Making his way back near his room, his hand wrapped around the knob, turning it. He stepped through the opening made in the door. Then he placed his hand back on the knob, only on the other side of the door, and pushed it back. The door hinge went into its slot and secured in place, making certain that it would not come open. Shinji looked down and noticed a door stop against the wall. This was interesting, since he wondered why anyone would ever need such a thing for this particular environment.

He walked slowly back to his seat, feet sliding across the soft carpeting. Using both hands, he pulled the seat out. Listening, he could hear the sound that the chair feet made on the carpeting. Shinji had noticed sounds like that before. But strangely, he never paid attention to the sound that the chair feet made on carpet. It was sort of a scritching sound. Definitely nothing like linoleum or something like that, since that barely made a sound at all. This was a different kind of sound. One that you would certainly not hear unless you slid the feet of a chair over the surface of carpet in a secretary’s relatively silent office building. At least he’d keep the knowledge of that sound.

Shinji sat down in the seat. It sort’ve creaked when his haunches rested their full weight on it. He knew that it probably wouldn’t break or anything, since chairs like that were designed to hold his weight proportionally throughout its wooden frame. Reaching under each sides of the chair, his fingers gripped around it and he lifted up. Stepping forward, his knees went under the metal desk, resting under the space left for them there. By moving his chair closer to the table, he had better access to his materials.

Picking up a stack of papers, he hit them against the desk surface a couple of times so that they lined up in a perfect stack. But, doing this caused a neat smell from the papers to waft through the air. Shinji pondered how many trees had went into getting these little slices of convenience to him. Likely not many. Trees were pretty big, and you’d think that only a couple at best would supply enough wood to give the whole Police Headquarters building enough paper to last for a while. Still, maybe they only used part of the trees. But even then, the papers were all pretty darned thin. That had to factor in to how much you could make from the trees, since thinness meant higher quantities.

Shinji picked up a pen from the table. Plastic. Where did the ink come from? Surely they didn’t extract it from squids. That would have been pretty cruel. Or maybe they used more humane methods for getting the ink, like gently massaging it out of the squids somehow. But wouldn’t they need to be in water, or they’d die? He wondered how they managed to separate the ink from the water if they had to leave the squids in the water when they extracted the ink. Man, maybe they just had a machine for it or something. But furthermore, how did they make the plastic mold for the pins? And get all of that ink into that tiny plastic tube? He guessed it wasn’t totally unreasonable.

Let’s see...” he said, laying the stack of papers back down and picking up the top one in order to read the words somehow printed on the paper with his eyes. Come to think of it, how did they print the words on the pieces of paper so fluently? Quill and dippable ink was the norm, but this had a typeface that was completely organized and uncluttered. No mistakes either. He thought it might have been a jutsu, or at least something equally complex, that allowed these words.

So the company hereby employs the consultant to perform the following services in accordance with the terms and conditions set forth in this agreement: The consultant will consult with the officers and employees of the company concerning matters relating to the management and organization of the company, their financial policies, the terms and conditions of employment, and generally any matter arising out of the business affairs of the company. Interesting.

Shinji wrote what he needed to on the paper. Something to do with business consultants and such things. Were the Kumo HQ in business troubles? If they were, then he would have to probably find another job. Not that he even had a job at that point, but if he was applying to Kumo and they had business troubles, then that could spell disaster for his business interests in becoming an Officer of the organization and the village. So that wasn’t good. He hoped that wasn’t the case. But, you know what? Reading on, he realized that this didn’t even apply to business troubles at all, but—in fact—potential business consultants. At least they knew what they needed to do to recover the economy.

It wasn’t until he moved on to the next in the stack did he realize that he was extremely bored.
